Just wanted to know why the 5150's seem to be getting such a bad rep here, I've played one a few times and I thought they sounded really ballsy, not the most versatile amp, but still better than most marshall clones.
-
I've never tried one myself, although in my experience I've noticed sometimes gear gets a bad rep not for what it can do, but for all the bad things people tend to do with it. I've heard some killer 5150 clips, and I've also heard some awful ones.
-
I think the main thing is that most of us are from UK in this forum. 5150s can be about £600 quid which is quite a bit. So they are not as good value as in the States.
-
^ +1
-
damn, 600quid? i can pick one up for 800$ hahahahahhahaha. I personally like the 5150 sound, tight super high gain for cheap? count me in! Downside is the shitety clean channel though, you definately need a chorus and low gain single coils (like cool rails) for it to stay clean at high volumes.
-
I REALLY like the 5150+ (gotta have seperate EQ for the clean channel) and have been on the lookout for a 'deal' one for ages. Not desperate to have one, just waiting to see one for £400 BIN on ebay - it's happened quite a few times before but I wasn't in the position to buy at the time.
The high gain tone even with the gain halfway up is devastating. Even at the full RRP I think theres not much else to beat it.
-
Well, if a 5150 is good enough for WFD, its good enough for anyone who plays metal
-
And In Flames play them a $%load, so another reason for metal lovers to like them :p
-
From what i see its mainly us brits dissing the 5150/6505 range, simply on grounds of price comparrison between us and the states and yus the prices are horrible :-( but its no reason to bad mouth an amp.....surely its the tone that matters.
Im currently on order for a 6505+ which set me back £799 around $1600 how shocking is that? eek
But to add to the list.... machinehead, chimaira (upgraded to the 6505+ for the latest album) and children of bodom
Love those bands, you cant argue with their tones... lots of impact :-)
Il try to get some clips if my amp ever shows up, its been on order for months now, apparently peavey are having trouble supplying, bah.

Dont forget arch enemy, between the buried and me, splatterhouse, immortal, and bloodbath... just to name a few... let alone nearly every hardcore band in N. America has one... THE hardcore setup is random guitar w/emg's --> 5150/6505 --> marshall 1960a cab.

and Amon Amarth

I absolutely love the 5150 it's in my top 10 amps of all time, the Mk1 is slightly sweeter in the mids more suited for rock than the MkII.. but still both great amps for the money.
If you get a 5150 and do a simple bias mod on it and get some quality tubes in it your 85% of the way to an SLO100.. and nobody bad mouths that amp.
A friend of mine has 2 5150's and a Powerball.. one of his 5150's is stock and the other is modded, I love the sound of the modded one i still think it's his best amp but he uses the powerball first and foremost.
-
Cool,
What and how do you mod the 5150 ive had one for ages, but about 3 years ago it starting screaming at me, i took it to 3 diferent amp techs and none of them could sort it. So i bought a Dual rec, but then by chance i decided to change the 12ax7 tubes and it worked fine. If theres a mod for it i d def give it a go, but obviously wouldnt trust any of the guys Ive used in the past.
Does anyone know someone who could do this around the London/SE area?
Cheers

I certainly wouldn't take an amp back to any 'tech' that couldn't dignose a microphonic preamp valve. it's like valve amp tech 101 for beginners - ALWAYS check the valves first.

Changing preamp valves in a squeeling head is always the first port of call
It's a bit like changing the strings on a guitar that is acting up - always the first and cheapest option - and usually sorts out silly problems without the need for a tech
The 5150 was kind of based on the Soldano that Eddie had been using.
It is rumoured that Eddie's own 5150s were different - or modified
I recall haring that he had them fitted out with Sylvania 6CA7 valves - like an American EL34 equivalent, which is what he had usedin the old Marshall too.

I only ever badmouth the price. and maybe the "clean" channel.

yep, Eddie was using SLO100s for recording and apparently the 5150s Eddie used were just knockoffs of that amp. doesn't make the 5150 a bad amp though, I actually prefer it to the SLO100.
the schematics for the SLO100 and the 5150 are quite different though, I wouldn't say Peavey copied the SLO100 at all for the production amp.

eddie always used big tube el34's, he always had all of his amps converted to use them... He had the 5150 built for him so that he could get the gain and tone of 2 marshalls daisychained, both set to 11... but at lower volumes.
anybody tried the new fender 5150?

hmm, nice tone - overdoing it on the squeels and harmonic feedback for my liking. never heard Ed play since I bought F.U.C.K. but it doesn't really sound like him much, just reminds me of Satriani

that definately is a fernandez sustainer causing all of the harmonic stuff...

Anyone know how the 6505 differs, if at all, from the 5150 :?: I'm guessing it's pretty close to identical, but you never know.
-
I owned two 5150s and they both had bad power trannies. One died, I got it exchanged for a 2nd, brand new unit, and that one died a week afterward.
I was very disappointed.

According to our Peavey rep it's identical bar the name.

Fender 5150? Meow?

I've got a 96 5150 combo and with a tung sol in V1,and V2 and JJ's the rest of the way , even the clean is decent.
I run mine into a Marshal 1960AX top (greenbacks) and it sounds killer.
Scored it for $400.00 bucks on Ebay last year, mucho bang for the buck. :D

jammy git
nice score though - I've seen the combos go cheap from time to time but I'm not into combos for metal (I'm a fully paid-up member of the 4x12 club).

bodoms 5150s have lee jackson mods
They would if they used 5150's.
They use Lee Jackson preamps with VHT poweramps. On something wild they used a Peavey 50/50 poweramp not a 5150 like everyone thinks they do.

I had a 5150 first version (it was one of the first in Germany actually) and to me - apart from the cleans - it's always been: (http://img3.harmony-central.com/acapella/ubb/love.gif) (http://img3.harmony-central.com/acapella/ubb/love.gif) (http://img3.harmony-central.com/acapella/ubb/love.gif) (http://img3.harmony-central.com/acapella/ubb/love.gif)(http://img3.harmony-central.com/acapella/ubb/love.gif) (http://img3.harmony-central.com/acapella/ubb/love.gif)(http://img3.harmony-central.com/acapella/ubb/love.gif) (http://img3.harmony-central.com/acapella/ubb/love.gif)

Eddie's 5150 was not stock.. i heard he ran it with a single power amp tube EL34/6CA7 totally over biased and cranked the $% out of it.. this would blow your amp without a doubht every single night.. hence his use of peavey to supply him with shite loads of amps for free which he fried every night.
you can't tell me a 5150 or 5150II sounds anything like his live tones, im not saying the stock 5150 is a bad amp but i've heard some fantastic modded ones eg, some changes to the tone control network and bias trim pot to have a wider range so you can bias them hotter to warm the amp a lot.. this really gets it into Soldano Terratory!
and when the 5150 was going through it's marketing phase and gaining popularity all the recordings Eddie credited to the 5150 were actually Soldano.
-
Does anyone know anything about the 5150 cab?
Ive heard that for 6L6's its much better than the standard marshalls?
anyone got one?
-
They're pretty good, but I do have problems with them:
LOUSY clean
Overpriced
Too dry sounding
