Title: JVM?
Post by: MDV on February 24, 2007, 08:50:43 PM
Anyone played a JVM yet?

I hear the cleans a good, but no word on the all-out metal sound yet. I've added it to my 'to try' list for the on goung super-amp hunt, but any info welcome!

i hear (from a mag review) that the resonance circuit uses a mosfet, so it's not technically 100% all-valve. How much difference that makes is anyone's guess... plus at the end of the day, if it sounds good, it is good. Haven't seen one myself, I want to try one (and the vintage moderns) just for a laugh.

Ain't heard a JVM but I know a lot of the guys off some of the US forums I visit have sold theirs on, they don't seem too happy with them ??
I heard a VM and it sounded great, more gain than I expected.

I was thinking about buying a VM until a got a Splawn QuickRod a couple of weeks ago ...... AWESOME !!! :D

They look awesome. Like the Marshall version of an ENGL.

Ok, it looks like a wait and see job. Not going to the top of the list by any stretch! I'm sure I'll get to try one soon enough (there being far more marshalls than engls, diezels and riveras! Put together, even)

^ yeah, I'm kind of kicking myself that I didn't try the vintage moderns last time I was down in Dublin. I kind of though "modern marshall, meh!", then when I got back I hear from some people who have tried them that they are much better than the JCM2000's... D'oh!

I have had a JVM for a month now - using it through a 1936 2x12, and its an incredible piece of kit.  It will definitely do metal and anything else you care to ask of it.  Just dont expect to dial one in in a few minutes, as there are so many choices of sounds and combinations of reverb, effects loop etc. you have to treat it like 4 separate amps and sort each one accordingly.  I have mine set up for 5 levels of gain - clean upto Metallica type levels with switcheable volume levels for each channel, and the footswitch is very clever - especially after using a TSL previously.

I tried one briefly on Saturday. I can't help thinking that it is a bit of a "gas factory" (literally translated from the French). It does plenty of sounds alright and from what I heard you could find happiness with it from clean sound to heavy metal. But the 4 channels with three settings each just feels over the top to me. I should have tried the vintage modern instead. This one looks really cool.

*cough* splawn.. *cough*..

only serious marshall choice, although they're a fair bit brighter than marshalls, need some serious taming with the right speakers and tubes etc..
