Hey
I am putting together a replica of Tony Iommi's 64 sg special that he recorded the first 4? albums with.
I love this guitar! (http://www.iommi.com/equipment/gibson_red_sg_aka_monkey.htm)
I have a sweet refin'd 64 sg special on it's way to me right now...
I am thinking pig-90s?
Anybody have any idea what those funky pickup surrounds on Tony's guitar are made from?
How would I go about getting a set of pig-90s with nickel covers not distressed here in the US?
thanks!

Pig90's would work. I would suggest a coil tap on them so you can switch from the high output Pig90 tone to a slightly more (hot) vintage BKP92 tone. This should cover all of Tony's P90 tones.
The distressed covers are an option. You can simply order the pickups in the online shop. Some options can be selected, you can write other options in the 'special instructions' box.

He had John Birch pups I think

I don't think you can get distressed covers on soapbar P-90's. They are available on the dog ear (like on juniors). You can get nickel plated plastic for soapbars. Pig-90's have a lot more bass than the regular P-90 and have a darker sound.

well I went ahead and ordered a set of pig-90s...!!
I think the darker bassier sound of pig90 will be ideal for the Sabbath guitar!
Especially coupled with my keeley java boost (rangemaster clone) into a 100 watt marshall dsl... can't wait.
Yeah I am a little confused about the covers being metal or not...
Tim clearly stated that the chromed covers are chrome plated plastic...but the distrassed metal looking soapbar pig90 pics... are they just a distressed version of the chrome plated plastic?
If the choice is distress real metal vs. shiny chrome plated plastic... I think I would chose the real metal even though chrome looks more like Iommi's.
whew
Also I dunno if the chrome plated plastic can be laser engraved or not...I was hoping the neck pup they could engrave thier logo on... the John Birch pup in the neck of Iommi's has a similiar engraving. =)

I have a dogear on a Junior (in fact it is the one in the first link). That is a metal cover. Not sure about the soapbar ones.

could use a little more tweaking...but it really does play nice...those pig-90s were cutting through nicely at my last 2 band rehearsals!
thank god I have a noise gate though =)
Thanks BKP and Tim personally for all the emails...
I guess you can't engrave on the chrome plated plastic soapbar covers?
So what does anyone know about John Birch pickups?
a few more pics

So what does anyone know about John Birch pickups?
I used to sell John Birch guitars back when they were frist popular, and so I have played most of the pickups. I also have a 1971 J1 Deluxe, with superflux G's and Tim played it when he was here recently. I asked him about making a pickup that would recreate the sound, but I think it is not easy!
All John Birch guitars were maple neck through, with maple wings. This makes them a bright guitar. The pickups are narrow with 9 screws in each polepiece row.
This document tells you all the types that he made.

thanks for the info...

would it be possible to get pig90s in a humbucker sized cover?
-
How about fitting a warpig into a p-90 casing? =)

Nope. I think only the regular P-90 will fit under a 'bucker cover, making the Mississippi Queen. You can't get P-91s or P-92s under a 'bucker cover either.
