Title: Need help on choosing a 1x12 cab
Post by: Brow on February 25, 2007, 04:00:41 PM
Hey guys.

I'm looking at buying a 1x12 speaker cab to go with my Orange AD30 Single Channel head.

The main 2 I'm looking into are:

Orange PPC112 - 1x12 cab with a Celestion G12K-100 speaker http://www.orangeamps.com/cabinets/1x12/

Award Session Pilot - 1x12 closed back cab with choice of Celestion speakers http://www.award-session.com/amplifiers_cabinets.html

Does anyone have any advice for me on Pros/Cons of each, which is made from better materials etc. I know this may be a simple question, but I know next to nothing about different speakers and cabinet materials :)

Thanks for any info.

Craig

I dont know about the session cab but the Orange is good; very thick, meaty sound coming from the birch ply cabinet. I think it'd be even better if you could find an older version with a vintage 30 in it.

Another pro for the orange is that it'll look perfect with your head!

those session cabs look fantastic value for money - i'm tempted by one now.

I guess it all comes down to how worried about looks you are and how much money you have. They're made of the same stuff anyways arent they?

The session cabs are top notch quality - you could always re-cover it in Orange tolex if you don't like the colour

Hey guys, thanks for the posts :)

I've spoken to someone on another forum who knows his Celestion speakers and he says that the G12K-100 that is in the Orange cab is quite bass heavy and thick, which may not be a good match for my Orange head, as it's also got alot of bass so it may get a bit too 'mushy' sounding.

I'm about 70% going for the Session cab with a V30, but then I have to decide to go for open or close back!

small cabs have no bass response.  If you have a bassy guitar or have high output pickups or ANYTHING that will need bass, it will just sound flubby all over the place.  Please do yourself a favor and get a 2x12, at least it has more air space on the inside to get some bass out of it.

Yeah, thick, big low ends and 1x12's don't go together very well. If you want a thick, powerfull, tight low end get atleast a 2x12. I have a 2x12 and its great for that.

The session cab is excellent!

I ordered one and amazingly it arrived the day after the order was put in!
Session are a small company that care about their customers, much like Bareknuckle and Matamp.

My Session Pilot is open back with a Celestion Century Vintage (neodimium), partnered with a Minimat EL84. The bass is not lacking in my opinion. A 1x12" is an excellent studio amp, and of course mic selection and amp/mic placement can be used to augment the bass if nessecary.

Build quality is fantastic and the cabinet is in no way cheap looking if that's something you were worrying about.

Highly recomended!

I got an open-back 2x10 Session cab about 6 months ago to use with my Fender Champ.

Excellent!  Great build & tone - highly recommended

a 1 x 12 CAN deliver the goods if it is a THIELE designed cab-I have 2-they are ported-they can hang or out-hang any 4x12-def. can hang with a 2x12-a THIELE must be heard to be believed-put it like this, when I gig, it is sooo much easier to put one of these in the truck as opposed to lugging around a 4-12-you can snag some with V30's at good prices..the ev m12L will cost you..200 watter-if it is ported, it has got the bottom

genz benz g-flex is the best 2x12 i know of.  It has the bass response of a 4x12, and almost weighs the same as a 4x12 too.  Its a $%&#in badass cab.

I've heard ace stuff about Genz.

Thanks for your opinions guys.

I do already have 2x12 and 4x12 cabs, but there are times my band only play 30 minute sets, and this is when the portability of a 1x12 cab is needed :)

I'm currently using my Marshall JTM60 1x12 combo as a cab, but I feel I'd be better off buying a 1x12 cab (at this moment in time, the Award Session) and selling the Marshall to someone that will actually use it as an amp!

Thats interesting, this thiele idea... i've been looking for a 1x12 for my JTM60/JCM600 head, and i know i don't like the marshall 2x12, and i don't really like open cab's... maybe thiele is the answer.

Whats the difference between ported and thiele? i wonder if i could mod an Award Session closed-cab for it... or get them to do it!

Brow - you could always phone Stuart at Award Session, I have found him to be quite knowledgable as to what speaker to use to get a specific tone.

check out thiele on web....engineer who developed this unique cab....so it is diff. than regular ported cab-I own two..one has an electro voice evm 12 L speaker in it-very efficient 200 watt speaker-bright and unforgiving, but it has puch and bottom for days-great for modern playing/ultra dynamic on cleans-the other has a celestion v30-great combo
-I a/b'd them with a friend's 4x12 mesa boogie rectifier cab-I could not tell the diffence and bought the cab on the spot-amazed at the bass-sounded just like a 4x12
-this cab is sold by mesa boogie..maybe exclusively, but you can find them floating on the bay...if you find one with the ev, it is vey popular bc it is not made anymore!!boogie also carries them, but with a v30, I think-check out the mesa boogie website..also go to grailtone.com and click on boogieboard-a lot of info on thieles there when you do a search

Hey guys.

I've decided that I'm gonna go for 1 of the Award-Session Pilot cabs over the Orange cab.

I think I'm going to speak to Stewart at Award-Session to see what he suggests for a speaker, and then I'll get it on order :)

I gave Stewart at Award-Session a call today as regards possible speakers for my 1x12 cab, and he kept me on the phone for 20minutes telling me all the differences between speakers, open/closed back cabs etc.

He eventually boiled down to it and recommended a Celestion G12 80 (Classic Lead) to me for my cab, so I think I'll give 1 of those a try in an open back cab to see how I like it :)

Wish i wasnt so cr@p on the phone, maybe i'd talk to the guy too.

I really like the idea of getting one of his cab's, instead of a marshall 2x12 for my JTM60 head.

I'd be very interested to hear what a JTM60 is like in that cab setup! i know for sure i don't like closed cab's...
