Ok, i have been doing a lot of research and have narrowed down my pickup choices to the the warpigs and ceramic warpigs.
I own a custom finished 2004 Gibson Flying V with an ebony fretboard and mahogany body/neck.
normally, i would go for the natural, darker sounding magnet, like the alnico-however, being i own an all mahogany guitar with an ebony fretboard, i was actually considering the ceramic pigs instead.
any input is greatly appreciated.

I think I'd go with the alnico Warpig. They clean up better and you've still got more than enough grunt to blow most other pickups away. 8)

yeah, some of (READ: MOST) clips ive heard of the Ceramics seema bit harsh and bright to me, but i really dont know how they clean up in a guitar such as mine. I know mahogany and ebony combos can make a huge difference.
BTW, here is a pic of the guitar they are going into. i know it doesnt have much to do with anything but i did re-finish it myself and i am damn proud of it :D. Eventually i plan to do a full blackout of the hardware with 2 concentric Vol/tone pots in the old volume slots and maybe a master pot in the old tone slot, or if i cant do that ill just make it a dummy to fill the hole.

Wow dude, that's a sweet lookin' axe!
What type of music do you play?
-
Thanx! :D
thrashy powermetal with a progressive edge.
I guess the best way to describe it is a balanced blend of old school metallica, maiden, iced earth, & megadeth, with a bit of dragonforce, opeth and dream theater thrown in.

We're not so different, you and I... :)
-
haha. so what u suggest, ceramic or alnico piggys?
-
i think most of the people who consider a ceramic warpig is into that type of music. For me i'd go with alnico magnets, I mean ceramic os just a nasty fake magnet that brake the laws of physics  MAGNETS ARE SUPOSED TO BE HEAVY, SHINY, AND METAL!!!!!   :D ceramic

Well, I have a Nailbomb bridge (Alnico) and I wouldn't call it 'dark' at all. In fact, it's pretty bright, and it would handle all of the bands you mentioned very very easily, especially the old-school thrash stuff.
All I'm saying is that if Alnico can do it and is way more versatile, why go for ceramic?
-
yeah ive been thinking alnico myself. ive got this nasty "sharpness" out of my low e palm mutes with every damn pickup i try.
But my B-52 AT-100 head with JJs tends to really run tight when i set it to solid state rectification so i bet i could get a nice tight responce from the alnicos.
can anyone compare the bass response of the alnico pigs to the Duncan JB-4. i hate the overall sound but the bass tightness seems to be perfect for me.
-
My nailbomb definately chugs better than a JB, in fact, my neck Trilogy chugs chunkier than a JB!
Expect HUGE bass from an Alnico Pig
-
how are they in relative to smoothness of tone? i really want to ditch that sharp sound.
-
^ ^ ^
Not sure about pigs.
All I can say is that Nailbombs aren't really sharp, but they do CUT.
Keep in mind that I have an alder body and you have a mahogany body, so they can't really be compared...
-
yeah i really would love nailbombs but tim said that the wings of a V soak up a ton of string vibration and that id be better suited with the warpig.
so, Alnico Warpig it is then. i dig it a lot.

You can further shape the sound - mainly the attack - with different picks. I tend to use two picks, one is a tough plastic one, the other one is made of agate. :) The difference is night and day - when I want a smooth solo, I'll use the agate, and when I need a sharper attack, I'll go back to the plastic pick. :)

well if it is your setup(the flying v..),i m guessing you re using an 81 in the bridge(ceramic magnets) position, and a 85 inthe neck position(alnico5magnets),they both have the same output, the only difference is their magnets,so try to swap the pickups (bridge)to hear how they sound respectively, this will give you an idea about the warpigs.then again tim has to lower the output of the ceramic warpig to make it playable(18.5k,instead of 22k),so alnico5 warpig is 22k,ceramic warpig is 18.5k,cheers.

actually, i hated the 81 in the bridge and i run 2 85s.
but thanx for the advice.
