Can anyone give me a list of good Custom guitar makers, with decent prices, cheers! I know of Ran Guitars and Rek so far.
-
Feline, Vigier.

Legra. Thats where I got mine. Phenomenal guitar, absolute bargain for the spec, quality and service.

Wayne Guitars.

Killer Guitars.
I wouldn't say that they had "decent" prices though, i think you pay a LOT just for the novelty of having a guitar built by Wayne Charvel himself.

Only becasue the demand is there!

If you're into insane metal guitars, check out KXK Guitars- http://www.kxkguitars.com. They're the people who made Karl Sanders guitar, the guy from Nile :D
I think they're sort of semi-custom, i.e. they give you the shape and you can refine what you want on it- but put it this way, it's very rare that you're going to see someone else using a Warrior V so it might as well be custom :D, and the price for a guitar like that is pretty frickin' cheap.
-
There's Morgan Custom Guitars. Well, they're making one for me at the moment...
-
There's WezV above. Only seen pictures and they're very nice. My mate John at Delta Resonator Guitars builds the odd electric and they're verrrrrry nice indeedy. He's got a couple of LP types at the minute and I want them.
-
http://www.ormsbyguitars.com/
that WOMD (Weapon Of Mass Destruction if I remember correct) in the gallery section is really crying out for battle worn camo C Warpigs and a camo Trilogy
-
Perry (Ormsby) is in Oz though.........
.......Not that I know where the original poster is based though

Cheers for the nod TM. I should point out that i mainly do this as a hobby with the occasional bonus, i onkly do a couple of commissions a year at the moment for a little profit- i am not calling myself pro . . . yet!! I am still not sure i can make a living at this.
I have an issue with the term 'custom' guitar because i dont think i make custom guitars. I make bespoke guitars designed around a players needs - custom to me suggests a customised version of a normal guitar, which i suppose i do as well but mostly i make my own designs based around my (or the players) ideas.
I also have an issue with price. Its very hard for me to make (cost of parts) a fender style instrument for much less than they cost to buy from teh factory. So if i was looking to make a decent profit on this i would need to charge 3 times as much as fender for essentially the same specs. But it would all be hand made and i am fairly sure it woudl be better made and sound nicer as well. Some people will still look at it and say its overpriced compared to a fender.
A nice custom guitar will cost ya!

I live in the UK btw
-
In the US, but still one of my favorite builders:

-
Gorgeous guitar (http://www.mykaguitars.com/instruments/034/default.htm) Little too expensive for my tastes though.
-
Yeah man, he's real good. There's a blue one somewhere which I'll own one day: http://www.mykaguitars.com/instruments/010/default.htm
What's your budget and what sort of thing are you after?
-
http://www.ranguitars.com/
there's a guy called Alan Brason who lives near me - excellent quality guitars. don't think he has a website though but all his work I've seen is top notch.
-
Aren't we forgetting Librium guitars from our forum buddy Drac?
http://www.libriumguitars.dk/HOME.html
-
some nice guitars on librium, and WezV
-
I had a custom made by Trevor Usher in Wales, his webiste is called soundsinscale - google it.
Got a custom strat for £1000...very nice guitar too (although the first neck did warp, I dont believe that was his fault). Anyhow, he made me a replacement neck for free, so can't complain.

I could probably stretch to £1600-£1700
-
http://www.mosercustomshop.com are amazing. I know a coupla folks with handmades from there. And they say they're the best playing guitars on the planet
Quite a long waiting list to get one built though

You could get a monsterous guitar from Legra for that!
Mines pretty high-spec and cost £1330: http://www.legraguitars.co.uk/mdv602.htm
-
:guitar4: What the hell! £1330, Thats crazy, and the built quality looks very nice too. I think I'll go for a Legra... I'm really want something to inspire me to practice more and getting a new guitar will help with that for sure. When you been teaching basic stuff like A, D, E to kids all day you get back home and just wanna relax. Though recording helps with enjoyment.

+1
You can get ANYTHING done, some "custom" builders restrict your neck types and body shapes, but Ran will do absolutely ANYTHING for you. Hell, you could dump water on the ground, draw an outline and send it to them and they'll make it.
The other great part is they have a damn sweet pricetag.
No restrictions + low price > anything else ahhahaha
-
Bob at legra will also make anything you want him to, and is also very reasonably priced. And FAR better service, seeing as I sent out for a quote from Ran back when I was exploring options and they didnt even reply. Bob gets back to you in detail the same day most of the time, next day if not.
Legra > Ran ;)
-
I did get a couple of quotes of different specs from Ran, but the don't include shipping and handling costs so you never know how much that will bring you over. I like the fact that Bob is based in the UK as well so I don't have to worry about import duty/tax.

good thinking.
my next guitar is either going to be an ESP LTD deluxe or a custom guitar.... probably either Feline or Legra.
-
save that little bit extra and go for custom, so you can get exactly what you want. You'll get a better build quality and you don't end up spending an arm and a leg based on brand naming.

+1 to that
There are some great UK builders who make some really nice stuff
By and large we're all pretty friendly and will accomadate your ideas and wishes.
I have liked Bob's stuff (legra) from what I have seen on here and regular forum members will have seen enough of my stuff for me not to need to blow my own trumpet.
And of course they can come with BKPs as standard!!!
-
There are plenty of good Brittish Luthiers about, the problem is getting exactly what you want, since most people don't know what it is they want.
-
yeah, good point. i'll probably just browse their galleries and see what looks right for me.
EDIT: omg omg i love that Feline gothic warpig SG...... *drools*
-
bit late but +100110 on Legra
http://www.legraguitars.co.uk/home.htm
Mine is the 'CH5150'
:D

To be fair, I don't think you'd have to pay customs any more on rans, as poland is in the EU now... I think I asked about postage too, and it wasn't all that much. Ran actually got back to me when I had some questions (but then gajic got back to you, mark, and never got back to me, lol, i guess that evens out).
But yeah, the thing I disliked about ran was the wait... it was something like 8 months, last time I checked! :o And +1 on legra/bob getting back to you extremely quickly, and with great info.

yeah i looked at that one, you've got a stunner there chrisola! You were gonna change one of the pickups in your harmony central review weren't you to a bareknuckle?
I'm currently in the process of discussion with bob on whats best. he's got such good advise.
-
yeah i had it with a Nailbomb bridge and Mothers Milk neck Bareknuckles, now its a Nailbomb and Sinner \m/
-
Well I've sent bob a design now... we'll see what he thinks :P Its very metal. heh
-
Oh let's see! :D
-

betcha mine's more metal. in an 80's kind of way. EDIT: garg, mark's is probably the most metal. :(

This is sort of a general idea of what it'll look like.

jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesus!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that is killer!!!! will it appear as a model in the custom shop section of the website when it is finished??? i may be forced to buy one lol
-
Personally not a V fan, but looks nice.
-
Sexy. Very sexy. I love that offset V shape. :D
-
Not really a custom, but I was reading about how good these were.

Played both an F1 and an X1, didn't like either at all.
and it's a totally different range to a custom.
-
Blimey, I was reading an old copy of guitar buyer last night and they thought that they were awesome. Just goes to show that before you buy a guitar, you should always have a bash of a few examples. I love my mates V style resonator necks but they're not to everyones taste.
-
I remember reading about the F1 in Guitar Buyer aswell, think they gave one away in the same issue.
-
No wonder it had a good review then.
-
If may, i'd like to chime in for Ran, as has been suggested by a couple of others. I was very happy with the service and the quality of the finished product (http://oli.digitalwaffle.net/ran/), which was a very reasonable price (<£900). Although their prices have risen a little since i ordered (just over a year ago), i'd still recommend them to the n'th degree :)

That cost less than 900?!
Including delivery, vat etc?

Yep :) Including the flightcase too! I think the shipping was only about 40euros.
They can put BK's in there too, i didn't order mine with them though, but i swapped the SD JB in the bridge with a Nailbomb a couple of weeks ago, and it sounds even better now :)
-
Oooooh awesome :D
-
I give a vote of support for maverick guitar's quality. Try to find the ones with the ribbed hardware - they are gems!
-
^You're from Malmesbury? lol I live just 5 mins down the road from there. Small world... :P
-
I'll be passing you both tomorrow then.
-
I think Chris has the mos metal shape there! Keep us posted on how it goes!
You and Bob hammered out some specs yet? (I didnt by now, though, took me a couple of weeks at least)
Edit: they in no way resmeble customs and dont have that qulaity level by a long way but I never played a bad maverick. The wortst I've encoutered is 'nothing special for the price'. Most are good value. I've played maybe 10 of em in total. I have heard of bad ones though, so its not all that good.
-
This is sort of a general idea of what it'll look like.

arg, you've out-metalled mine. Mine's basically a king v, non-offset. and it's not black either.
:drink:
-
You got any pics on the forums Dave? I'd love to see it  Yeah we;ve sorted out the specs... I'll post them in a min.
-
^ hehe, it hasn't come yet... best I've got is a kisekae jobby...
-
ahh i just realised i haven't got a complete spec sheet from bob yet though we've finished the spec and what it'll cost...which is a lot but i can afford it.
