Title: World's Worst Guitar Practice
Post by: willo on March 03, 2007, 06:59:58 PM
Just remember, we have our debut gig with the new line-up this Thursday, and a further gig on the Sunday.

With that in mind, we decamped to the rehearsal room at about 11am. Quite an earlyish start, but we were looking forward to it. It's about a 40 minute walk from my house.

After I get there, hook up my amp and pedals, turn the amp on. Hooray, the valves are dead! Frantically trying with different plugs, sockets, cables, guitars, no use. Valves are dead!

After financially figuring that this is going to cost me maybe £100 to fix, and probably wont be ready in time for the gigs, I decide to peer over the top of the amp. In doing so, the 40kg combo falls flat onto my big toe. Now, my toe is broken. Its a mess. My expensive cable that was in the amp at the time has also been pretty much snapped off.

Singer makes a 'witty' remark. I am about to punch him but manage to calm myself to a 'Thats not $%&#ing helping is it??'

Then have to make a 45 minute round trip on foot (yes, with the broken toe) to pick up replacement amp. On carrying this back to the practice rooms, I cut my hand on the back of the amp. Brilliant.

Still, at least we get to practice now. So I'm playing on some old solid state Fender (Roc-Pro or something? Doesn't sound toooo bad for cleans). And then, oh great. We start arguing a bit over the direction of the band and whether we can just start wrtiing some new material. God knows where this came from.

Now my guitar is spattered with blood from my cut hand, and is resting with a tech trying to sort the truss rod out.

Having said all that, we ripped through our set as well as we've ever done, and we sounded tight and good. So provided I can borrow someones amp on Thursday and actually manage to stand on my foot, we should be all good.

And I want to go to this party tonight now but I'm in a shite mood and this girl will be there and its confusing and oh god i think i just want to sleep right now, sleep and eat tesco chocalate cookies and put on weight that i cant run off now ive got a broken toe...

While I can sympathize, I couldn't stop hearing Marvin the Paranoid Android's voice in my head while reading your post ... Life ... don't tell me about life.

Anyway, hope you get it all sorted out. And don't miss the party!!

Where is the perspective when most needed? At least your life is not tainted with boredom. Best to you Willow.

Ha, yes. Well a good nights sleep and I feel better.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't upset or anything, just generally hacked off! It's sods law that the drummer's cymbal cracks and my amp breaks in the week before our first gig!

Ach well

It does seem that gear has the amazing ability to let you down when you need it most-having said that, the purpose of an amp is to "amplify" so unless you are using it as a door stop, you can be sure that it will stop doing that at some point-I just wish they would choose better times. You seemed to have a cr@p day-I remember the days of lugging gear around-I even pushed my 2 x 15 bass cab on it's castors to a mates house years ago as I must have upset my Dad and he'd refused to give me a lift. I forget the row but I remember pushing the cab in light rain for 3/4 of a mile. You guys are obviously feeling the stress of the forthcoming gigs and questioning your whole existence as a band.I would say, "chill" do the gigs as well as you can-and think about direction afterwards.
My band is currently committed to covering another bands residency at some really posh hotel/restaurant.We are getting paid well but we are a rock/pop covers band-the punters want dinner dance stuff-we are expected to play for 3.5 hours per night-it is hard and we have all got very stressed with each other as we had been booked at the last minute and accepted before they revealed all the details(memo to self, sack bookings manager)-We have done two gigs so far, we pulled it off twice and we now love each other again. Customary waffle from me but best of luck Willo-knock em bandy!!

Cheers all,

well I think it was just payback for the amazing weekend I had last weekend. It was one of those were everything seemed to 'clicl', and yesterday was the reverse. Such is life.

As I say though, we are all good as a band and all is well. I'm sure we'll do ourselves proud this week!

I'm just a bit curious as to the process of borrowing another bands amp for my gig. On Sunday I'll have a HRDX and Thursday is unknown as of yet. Eitehr way, it probs won't be the same as my JCM800. Wondering if the other bands are going to let me EQ their amps...

Well...maybe something nice happens!
Maybe you are going to use some Line6 POD thursday, and you really really really love it, so then you will get rid of the JCM, and buy yourself a POD with a solid-state power amp, so that getting all the stuff from A to B is much much much easier.

But....maybe that is not how it is going to happen  :P

Good luck!

"Too much f*ing perspective", and no perpective at all. Sadly  we never seem to agree, it is bound to start all over again.

I wanna know what the 'witty' remark was!

Well, If it's any comfort, on school camp last week, I was shouldered in the face during a game of aggressive frisbee on school camp, which broke my sunnies and gave me a black eye, and I went ice skating the next day and broke my nose on the ice, which wouldn't totally stop bleeding for about 5 hours.

I went to sleep that night to wake a half hour later after noticing my nose was bleeding into my eye quite profusely, and all over my pillow case.

Well, that's my little whinge...

Muzzzz, you sound like my bro.  He generally uses his face as a handbreak.  This was from using his face against a tree to stop himself when he fell of his bike (going down hill fast)

OUCH

and Willo...its all a test.

Survive all the shitee and one day your world will be filled with girls in small bikinis bringing you drinks, money that does indeed seem to grow on trees, and you will have some poor underpaid guy to worry about amps breaking ;)
