Title: Neck pickup shim FTW!
Post by: Davey on March 11, 2007, 04:20:46 PM
so, the neck pickup cavity on my fusion was too deep (or the screws were too short).. one way or the other, i had a pup that was 4mm too low and the volume difference between the bridge and neck was immense. not to mention microphonic feedback, cos the pup was on the last thread of the screw and it vibrated.

so.. having a couple of scr@p pieces of rosewood at home i finally decided to make a shim for it.

took the rosewood piece (http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/2694/p3110050bj4.th.jpg) (http://img62.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p3110050bj4.jpg) cut it to size and carved it to the shape of the cavity (http://img160.imageshack.us/img160/7836/p3110052ct1.th.jpg) (http://img160.imageshack.us/my.php?image=p3110052ct1.jpg) ... i had to scr@p this piece, since i misaligned the holes for the screws :P  plus, it wobbled, cos i cut it up a bit too much.

took another one, made the holes first, then attached the pup cover and carved along its outer edge. perfect fit this time

put some glue into the cavity, stuck the piece in and applied some glue with a brush along the edges (the edge closer to the bridge has more glue because i thought i was going to need a bit of a channel, where the wire is going to run, but there is enough clearance below the pup for that). had to watch out that i didnt glue the wires to the guitar hehe.
pretty amateurish job, but it will make do for me :D
(and the first real job on the guitar, where i didnt screw up the finish in any way, cos i put towels over the guitar when i applied the glue :D )

i got tatooed :D
i'll post the pics later.

and i forgot to take a pic of the finished cavity. now it looks just like a normal fretboard piece of rosewood. no more glue stains. the pup looks like its higher, we'll see once the strings are in there. i also put some foam underneath. i'll post pics later. shame that i dont have any before pics (i always forget something :P )
