Title: Pickup Suggestions for Mockingbird
Post by: psy on March 11, 2007, 11:33:51 PM
Hi there,

I'm thinking about changing the stock pickups in my BC Rich Mockingbird (NJ Classic Series through neck) guitar. I play rythym (and a little bit of lead) in a rock band that tune to B E A D F# B (11-58's strings). I use a Marshall JCM800 head through a homemade 2x12" cab loaded with Celestion Vintage 30's & I use a Boss GT-6 multi FX pedal.

You can hear examples of my band's music here (http://www.myspace.com/worldis)

Cheers,

Simon

(Appologies if that was too much information there)

Abraxas's work really well in neck throughs, though I'm not sure with the dropped tuning how they will sound.  Another pickup that sounds great in the bridge on a neck through is the Cold Sweat.

Thank's for the reply Philking.  I'll go listen to some clips of those.  Do you know if any of the audio clips have been done for lower tunings?

The link isn't working for me.  But I had an Abraxas with a similar string gauge and I thought the sound/bass was flabby.  I could get it to sound good on my guitarport with a lot of EQing, but with my little marshall I didn't like it.  It sounded great in normal tuning though.

Maybe a ceramic pickup, Miracle Man, Painkiller, Cold Sweat or higher output Alnico-pickup like a Nailbomb (love mine) or Warpig.

You say rock, but its a little vague.  I would guess B tuning would be some heavy rock.   Have any examples since the link isn't working?

Hi Tol,

I've fixed the link...  I foolishly missed a 't' out of the 'http://' bit.  If you're still having problems I also have a track up at http://www.worldisstatic.com

Thanks for the suggestions.  I'll go have a listen to all the clips I can of all of them.

psy, slightly off-topic but what's the neck shape like on your NJ Classic?  Fat like a Gibson, skinny like an Ibanez, somewhere inbetween like a Fender?

I've been GAS-ing for a Mockingbird, but you don't see many in the shops and I don't want to risk buying online then find I don't get on with the neck.

I have a Nailbomb and I think it would handle the rock and clean parts very well.  Love that pickup

GAS-ing?  Not heard that word before.

Anywho.  The neck is 4.2cm wide at the nut & 5.7cm wide at the 24th fret.  Is that what you mean?  Or do you mean the depth of the neck?  Looking at it I'd say it's a tiny tiny bit deeper than an old Squire strat I have.  I can't comment on it being anything like a Gibson because I don't have one to compare it too.

I can take some photo's of it if it'll help.

Cheers,

Simon

Cool,  thank you for taking the time to come back to this topic & listening to my music.

If the Nailbomb can handle the clean & the rock parts then it certainly sounds like the man for the job.  I'm off to listen to as many clips as I can get.

Cheers,

Simon

I have one and a guitarport.  Althought I'm not tuned to B.  I'll see if I can get a reasonable rock clip.

Maybe others have suggestions for Low tuning Rock.

Cheers Simon.  Stick around, you'll hear a lot about Guitar (or Gear) Acquisition Syndrome and GAS-ing on here.

It was the depth I was wondering about, I'm not bothered about the width.  I know it's tough to measure unless you have calipers or something, but Fenders are about 20mm at the 1st fret, 22 at the 12th.  The Gibson '59 neck shape is pretty close to an inch at the 12th - and it has a "round" chunky feel.

I'll have to shop around and play a couple.

In Mockingbirds ceramics certainly hold up well so checkout Cold Sweat, Painkiller and maybe Miracle Man.
Welcome to the forum too!

Thanks for replying Tim.  Do you if anyone has done any clean & dirty clips of any of the pickups on guitars tuned to B?  I've started searching, but there's a lot of clips out there (with some truely breath taking guitar playing).

I've been trawling through the clips for the last few days (over 50megs of mps I've listened to so far).  At the moment the MM's seem to be leading in the bid for my cash

Shame there isn't the say rock riff & the same clean riff played on the pickups with the same guitar through the same amp with the same settings.  that'd make life a little easier when deciding.

Oh, and I guess the most important thing...

Covers/open coil?

I totally agree, and there will be clips for all the pickups soon. (Well, I think all of the major ones ... I'm not sure if there's going to be one for things like the ceramic Warpig, and other odball combinations)

That being said, in all honesty, how a pickup plays clean to me is of minor importance, compared to how it sounds with serious gain. Fortunately, the majority of the clips in the Players forum appeal to that side of things!!

Know this is offtopic, but will we be able to try out a fair number of the pickups at LGS? And will they be on sale there?

Can anyone say what it was like last year? Would love to try out some hi output pickups for the set which I'm buying (will have the £220 the day before LGS :P)

Last year we had most of the pickups at the show.  The ones you usually won't fine there are the custom order ones (ceramic WP, 7-String and bass pickups).  Tim brings along a great selection of guitars loaded with most of the humbuckers along with a couple of Strats and Teles.  For the last 2 years we have had 2 of Tim's Zakk Wylde heads each with thier own slope 4x12, and last year we had the H&K Alex Lifeson and Duotone with cabs too.

Not sure what will be there this year for amps.  You will be able to buy the pickupsat the stand, though last year the MQ's went quick!  I know Tim and the guys will be gearing up to build as many sets as possible for the show.

^ If you hurry, you might be able to get em at LGS, but it depends on how elaborate you want to get.

Battleworn camo with colours matching my viper.

Think I could order the casing and then choose the pickup when I get there?

Do you know any decent airbrushers?
You could get white covers and then hand them over to the artist to do the re-finish. At the very least you'll have a set that looks different to everyone else's.

I don't know any airbrush artists... let alone any decent ones.  I'm thinking now I might prefer open coils...  but I really want it to say BKP on it.  Kind of like how the stock ones have BC Rich on them.  Infact don't SD & the like all have thier name printed on open coil pickups?

I'll finally have enough money to get the bridge pickup in a week or two (not bothering chaning the name as I never really use it & can't justify £100 on something I 'might' use).

I still can't really decide which pickup to go for.  I'd still say it's between the Nailbomb & Miricle Man.

If it helps I really like Tool's guitar sound on the laterulus album.

Why am I so in-decisive?
