Really pleased with this tone on this recording, I think I'm finally getting the hang of mic'ing amps, glad I stuck with it :D
Epi LP + bridge mule > Laney GH50L > G12H > SM57:

Not sure if my neighbours were happy with me recording at half 9 in the morning but my reasoning is that they should be at work by that time anyway

I want a set of mules....very big sound..great
what drums you using?
-
I didnt do the drums, its a backing track that I got from either www.guitarbt.com or www.guitars101.com, cant remember which.
-
cool though am lovin the mules at the mo......may have to get some
-
Yeah, they sound really good, especially through this amp :D
-
Sounds superb Tom! Really, really good!
What's the trick to the mic placement/recording then?
-
Thanks, the trick is to just experiment with different positions until it sounds good  And of course reading the advice from Ben/TO on here :)
This is a good read, pretty funny sometimes: http://www.badmuckingfastard.com/sound/slipperman.html

Wow, great step forward Tom!!!! This is sounding spot on 100%
How was the mic placed, on or off axis? Really great, must be fun playing with this sound.
I want a GH50L now

Thanks for your comments :D Not bad for a stock laptop soundcard and single SM57 eh?
I think its off axis, but I dont really know the terminology. I'll take a photo later of how I mic the speaker so you can see where it is. GH50L are great amps, I've improved so much since I got it (well I think I have anyway), because I've been concentrating more on the playing and not tweaking to get better tone all the time.
And yeah, that recording guide is great, though I havent read much so far, its amusing at least :)

Awesome dude. Makes me more eager 2 get my BKP Mule. But mine is Alnico V as its goin into an SG. :D Rock on
-
Cheers :D
Hunter, below is a pic showing roughly where I mic the speaker, you can faintly see the outline of it and where the mic is pointed.. I guess its off axis.

Like my mic stand? ;)
-
Great playing on that Tom, really liked it. Damn nice tone too, I haven't been able to put my Epi LP down since I fitted the Mules.

That's what i think too...
even if the Elder Scrolls purists may kill both us for saying that
Oh, and your clip is really good...
You get a smokin sound out of this GH50L.
-
Tone was nice and the playing was good too, nice work. I was listening to Whitesnake this morning on my way into work. 8)

I've never played Oblivion, my computer isnt good enough to run it  I love Morrowind though, I was playing on it most of the afternoon.. I'm not very far into it yet, but I found some guy with no clothes on who had apparently been robbed, so I offered to help but I had to leave him to be killed by a cliff racer because I was about to die  :D
thanks for listening broken cord :)
-
Cool clip Tom! It's a great riff that one and you played it really well too 8) Lovely tone as well!
-
Thanks Johnny :) Havent seen you on here for ages! Hows things going?
As you can see, I've been posting way too much on here due to having too much free time
Though, last night at band practise was the first good one for ages! Finally found a good dedicated singer, so hopefully we'll get gigging soon, even if it is covers its still gigs :D

I've been lurking a bit! I'm ok Tom, how's you?
Good luck with the band! My fellow jam mates weren't into practising songs at home so we never got anywhere!
-
Wow, that sounded so brutal.
Makes me want to play my guitar. Loving the mules man, great playing and tone.
-
Tom which song of whitesnake is that u demoed the Mule with. I forgot the title of the song.
-
Still of the night.
:)

How much do them Laney amps cost? and what cab/speakers are you using with it? I always think guitar sounds better when miced up! really warm nice tone.
I'm thinking of getting a 50 watt stack myself, mainly for serious live work. I havent got enough money for a vintage marshall reissue, an orange, a cornford and anything 'boutique'
What is the laney amp like?
-
Brand new GH50L is £400. Used they go for £265ish. They're great amps and I miss mine. They do a modern JCM800 type tone very well if that makes sense.
-
Great playing. But I find the Mules over driven sound good but just not for heavy rock. Sound congested not open and full enough.
-
hm I kinda know what you mean, which is why I'm considering putting my Rebel Yell in the bridge position of my LP. Then again, I just recorded this yesterday and really like the tone:

nice clip I dig it. Not brite enough for GnR. But beginning part when guitars first come in sound great. It sounds great at classic rock I think. 70's and 60's.
-
Moving the mic towards the centre of the speaker will brighten the recording up a touch...

Yeah I did try that and it sounded too harsh/fizzy so I settled for a slightly more dull tone.. anyway hopefully it'll all sound good when the GnR clip is done, its getting bass and vocals added then being mixed/mastered by someone on harmony central for the guitar jam coverfest at the start of July :)
