I've been playing around with my B-52 AT-212 and I've found that I can get a pretty tight sound. Kinda, vintage tight, like Ride the Lightning tone.
But, over the years, I've developted a tone in my head and the tighter I make my amp sound the closer I get too it.
What amp (preamp, power amp, and cab setup) has the tightest, most focused bass around? Minimum flab, doesn't matter if its a 6, 7, or 8 string guitar. I'm not too focused on clean or overdrive sounds, my B-52 does those just fine.

Mesa Mark IV is probably the most tightest amp i've ever played through.
-
Diezel VH4.
-
I dont find mk IVs tight
Never payed a VH4, you could be right
Powerball is the tightest I've played thats coming to mind right now.

The thing with Mark IV's is that they react heavily to what cabinet is used, settings (even the tiniest of adjustments) and guitar/leads are used not to mention all the experimenting needed to get the right sound (though worth it in the end). Mark IV straight into a Marshall 1960 cab with Celestion V30's sounds amazing.

Fair enough mate.
I played it through a mesa cab, if thats any help in assesment of the tightness scale.
-
I own a mark IV-not a plug in and play amp-through an evm 12L 200 watt speaker, like found in thiele ported cabs, and proper settings(this takes patience!!!!just a little paaaaatience...)and you get tight!want one step beyond?shell out 3 grand for a boogie Mark IIc+-think early metallica/current petrucci
my IV can get tight/can also pull off clean headroom for country chickin pickin...can pull off classic tones as well(Zepp,ZZ..)thanks to simulclass....6l6 and el34's...you want it, you can get it for sure..seems to be 2nd most prized mesa amp behind IIc+-I have access to three of those, and they are incredible-if you didnt a/b the IIc and IV, however, it is hard to tell a difference--I snagged my IV for 1200, so that was the MAIN diff. for me

Diezel VH4.
^ +1
The Bogner Uberschall was very tight in the bass end too.
For a total different type of solid bass end, I've found Randall amps to be very, very good in this respect - all depends on whether you like that tone.

+1 on powerball.
I haven't tried the mark IV, so bear that in mind.
I have tried a vh4, I'd say engl is tighter... though the herbert is probably the one you want to try if you're after metal from diezel ( i haven't tried it).
best bet is to try everything you can.

The amp has less to do with it than your cabinet's construction, guitar's makeup, and your technique.

isn't it mainly your technique?

Engl E670? :>

Not necessarily, but it has a part in it. If you don't do heavy palm muting, you will get a lot of overhang from low notes. I think that the speaker cabinet is the part that determines how fast/tight or slow/flabby the bass will be.

Cheers dave.
Wise words TO.
-
ENGL savage.
tight as hell...

yeah, that too, lol. Any time I make any recommendation, I'm assuming that the guy (or girl)'s technique is up to the job.
definitely agreed about the cabs.
and cheers mark.

mesas are NOT TIGHT. They are not designed to be tight, and probably never will be, they do sound tight at bedroom levels but once you bring up the volume it all goes to spongy. Bogner Uberschall is decent, but thats a $%load of cash to dish out. Engl savage isnt as tight as the power ball ;)
my knowledge in order of crazy tightness
Engl Powerball (tightest you will ever get)
Engl Fireball (a powerball with half the wattage and less channels)
VHT Pitbull
Engl savage (i dont know if it should be before the pitbull though...)
peavey 5150
Engl SE
throw any of these on a VHT, mesa, or orange cabinet, and you'll have a tight ass monster.
-
I have found VHTs to be tight, but I am just a tabbycat, what do I know?
-
i heard a VHT pitbull combo last week because i am searching for
a new amp.
i have a mesa boogie DC-5 right now
VHT is tight................mesa is not
Also the VHT has a fat warm drive.......
Mesa has only tons of gain that means that you can play only metal with my boogie ....nothing more.
Maybe VHT will be my next amp.
-
the dc-5 is more of that spongy sound-night and day when compared to a mark series(not rectifier..) through the proper cab-mine sounds gooodntite running at high volumes but my cabs are ported and they have massive ev speakers- as always, play through one first-i believe you would be happy with the ones listed above

The Powerball is a tight sounding amp.It has lots of lows ,wich are well focused and not farting!
the Fireball is the best sounding ENGL IMHO ,and has more character tan the Powerball.
The Blackmore sig is just an amazing amp ,but tightness is not it's major strength. But not loose as Recto IMHO.
BTW ,VH4 is the tightest Rythm machine ever i heard. The speed picked Powerchords are really really clear ,and present! The Powerball is very close to that!
The Rockverb 50 was surprisingly tight too.But you need the dedicated cab for it!2x12's sound allways tighter for my ears.
-
Yeah I realised that the Powerball really is probably the tightest amp about. It f*cking roars like a beast too

Dunno... what happened to the JCM800 in this thread?

JCM800 is not a tight amp imo
-
Uberschalls are not tight. They are only supposed to be slightly tighter than rectos, and that's not saying much.
And the guy saying mesas aren't tight.... they were talking about the mark iv... which is not the same as the rectos at all. way tighter.

in fact, the slightly loose feeling is what makes them cool - IMHO

Played an ENGL Screamer today - WHAT A BEAST!!!
Tight as hell too.
