Having recently aquired some currency, I have been thinking about buying an acoustic guitar, just for a change from the old electric. I don't have the first clue about makes of acoustic guitars or what I should look for so any help would be awesome. I can spend about £150-£200.

Yamaha make great bang-for-the buck acoustics. You might be able find a used Ovation in that price range, too.

Thanks. I was thinking about getting a Cort as that is the make of my current electric guitar but I haven't heard anything about their acoustics.

I hear that Blueridge build guitars that you should have no right picking up for the kind of money they ask. Infact I know a couple of people with them and they think they're wicked (well for the money anyway).

Crafter also come up trumps in that price range.

My sister has a Cort acoustic, it's nice.
But the best best best for the buck IMO is the Taylor Big Baby if you like a transparent, loud sound. The playability of the BB is awesome, however it's more in the 300 GBP range new

There are some good suggestions here.I would add Washburn D10.Whatever you do, try and get one with a solid top. They tend to sound a great deal better.Check E-bay for an Epiphone PR350-if you can get one of those in good condition you will be laughing.

Freshman make good quality cheap acoustics in your price bracket.
Also Tanglewood do too, these are mostly copies of matins etc tho.
Best thing to do is go down to your guitar store and spend a good hour playing all the candidates. Bear in mind that if you can get a solid wood top as apposed to a laminate one, the tone will improve somewhat over the years.
There is a marked difference in tonewoods and quality once you go above £400 so it might be worth saving up if you are after an 'investment'.
Freshman is a great starting point in your price range though!

The new Johnson Carolina got a great review in a mag recently. It's £399 list, but I'm sure you could get it less than that if you shop around.

Tanglewood do some really nice guitars, and also Blueridge. Not sure about Cort, they make great electrics but I never tried one of their acoustics.

Hmmm... not big on Ovation.
The rounded plastic back is bloody annoying and keep slipping off your lap. and the ones I've tried - MIK and American - are just missing that warm vibe that you get with most acoustics in the same price range. But admittedly, they play bloody great and have beautiful soft v necks.
I find that acoustic guitars are much more inconsistent than electrics in terms of tone, you really just need to shop around and find a sound that you like, and a lot of people find it in very cheap guitars but not in the more expensive ones.
And keep in mind that the timbers in a used acoustic will have 'mellowed' a bit more than a new one.

Consider Lag (despite their awful adverts & web page)
They do quite a few models and I have to say that I loved their Parlour sized one out of the Summer range, had a lovely tone, the notes seemed to hang on the air (for want of a better description) and it was under 250 quid.

I've got a great Tanglewood that Ipicked up for less than £150 & it's one of my best sounding acoustics!
