Title: BKP for Randy Rhoads
Post by: Crazy_Joe on March 23, 2007, 10:36:57 PM
I've been watching a load of Randy Rhoads videos on youtube, i don't know how to get a tone like that and how the HELL does he get those insane pinch harmonics with those pickups and that amp?!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqwsOcKK3ic

Anyways what would be the best bridge pickup for rhoads tones?

Slighty off topic - is he bending the neck in that video near the start, seen as he doesn't have a trem?

I think I've seen Tim say before that the nailbomb would be best for Randy's tone, and I agree - i can nail that sound with my nailbomb through my jcm800. :)

Apparently an MXR Distortion+ was a key part of Randy's rig, but I agree the tone on that clip is very Nailbomby.

Randy's tone on that clip is excellent - he's playing the shite out of that LP.  Just goes to show, people whine on about LP's having poor upper fret access - didn't seem to bother RR (or ZW for that matter)

I can nail that tone (and harmonics) with an LP loaded with Mules into my GH50L.

I want an off-white LP like Randys though, they look so good :)

And I agree with HTH - nothing wrong with LP upper fret access really, takes some slight getting used to but once you're used to it, it feels fine :? I think people just like to nitpick

Well,  two plexis on 20, what else would you need to create an awesome, saggy, punchy, screaming guitar tone? Randys fingers maybe ...

I think Tim should make a Crazy Train pickup ...

i think nailbomb and painkiller would be fine too, but the new holy diver gets VERY close to randy rhoads tone on blizzard of ozz and vivian campbell tone on holy diver, but better, thicker and clearer, IMHO

try a mxr distortion+ and an equalizer boosting the mids in front of the amp
rhoads used dimarzio super distortion on his sandoval polka dot and it's specs are not so different from your old spec HD

For the Randy Rhoads stuff I've stayed mainly with Mules and Nailbombs, the Jake E Lee stuff Mules and obviously all the Zakk material I've used Miracle Man.When we do Sabs material I tend to play it in a Zakk style so use MMs although I've used Riff Raffs, Crawlers and Mules too.I must admit I can get the majority of Ozzy tones out of my Mule loaded Goldtop but I think most players would look for more gain............I just dig in more!

Sorry for a quick OT philly, how would you rate the Edwards material and build quality? I mean on a scale from chinese Epiphone to Custom Shop PRS?

Yup. Randy would do that very often... like Slash and so many others.
Be careful when doing that, you may cause the neck to snap obviously...
They can afford a new LP anytime afterall

Also, I have an Edward LP Custom 85CD/left Hand :
http://espguitars.co.jp/edwards/original/E-LP-85CDLH.html

The quality is really better than the Korean Epiphones but is definitly below
my MIJ Tokai Goldtop and faaaaaar away from my MIJ Orville.

I would say that the main weak point would be the lacquer used
(feel a bit cheap obviously... especially compared to my MIJ LP copies)
but everything else is really good.

Interesting - I'd say my Edwards guitars are at least as good as the Japanese Tokai Goldtop I owned, which had a couple of dodgy frets.  It was quite a new one though, not from the great days of Japanese copies.  :)

Tokai is also know for the unequal quality of theirs recents axes
(they apparently have a hard time keeping the production
up to request's speed) so what you're saying about you're Goldtop
make perfect sense.

Also, the only thing i find really cheap about the Edwards is really the finish.
Just doesn't feel good... like on all those medium-priced guitars where
'you can't feel the wood' if you know what i mean
(sorry english is not my primary language)....

Ok, back to topic  :)

He was supposed to do that a lot on the pre-chorus harmonics (at approx. 1'20'' for exemple) ... live at least.

Is it my ears, but I can hear an added lower octave tone on the main riff, especially at the end 5:12 ?

You can't tell with his pedal board though.

l500xl sounds more like george lynch or wolf hoffmann than randy rhoads
it's a great pickup, but too scooped and a bit thin to randy's sound
