Title: Chuck Shuldiner's sound
Post by: Mavet on March 23, 2007, 11:04:01 PM
Just this one question:
Which pickup do you think will get me as close as possible to chuck's sound (on Death's Symbolic album) on a maple neck-thru guitar (aside from the obvious x2n)?

cheers

Won't the MM have too little midrange?

Just turn up the mids on the amp  X2N is for a more scooped tone, and that's what Chuck used.

Edit: you might even want to look at a Ceramic Warpig or Alnico Warpig.

There's a clip of Crystal Mountain with a Warpig

I´m a  fan of Death. I can get very close to Chucks tone with the MM...the MM have that roar to it and very metal kida pickup ...open and Organic just as the overall feeling on Symbolic. I can't speak for the Warpig though but clip is ok.

^ Now, this poses a dilemma.
do you use a marshall valvestate, like chuck, to get your tone?

You need any more help in choosing, or have you decided on the Warpig?

You could always get the best of both worlds and have a Ceramic Warpig! The standard Warpig has an Alnico V magnet, and the Miracle Man has a Ceramic magnet. Ceramic is for a tighter low end, more harmonics, Alnico V in the Warpig is for more grinding mids kinda thing (i think thats right!)

If it were me, i would go for a Ceramic Magnet pickup as the X2N is ceramic, i think i would go for the Miracle Man, but Ceramic Warpig will sound just as good just more bass because of the double row of screws on the pickup.

I still don't know  :?
I did not like most of the clips I've heard of the Miracle Man (lack of midrange) and Ceramic Warpig (too much bass).
I like the Alnico 5 sound pickups (Nailbomb and War pig) from the clips I heard, and that's one of the reasons I'm not going for the x2n righ away.
I also have a guitar equipped with two SD Invaders (ceramic magnet), which are OK, but there is something in it's midrane balance that is just wierd (too much low midrange and not enough high midrange I think).

in short, I think I'm going for the warpig but that may still change as I'm not going to buy it for another month or two...

The MM is your pickup imo. I can't get closer to chucks sound. If anyone out there can.... which pickup except the X2N could that be? the Painkiller??.

Maybe Tim could make a "Human" pickup   ?

Out of what I have, ceramic warpig is closest, but I have a feeling from clips that the painkiller would be better.

Dakines were really helpfull here: he has some cwp/painkiller clips so I can hear the difference to mine quite well and eliminate the guitar and amp to a degree, and I think the additional mids of the PK will help a lot in getting chhucks sound.
