Title: Heavier than Hell (Faded Flying V)
Post by: keith on March 24, 2007, 11:06:07 AM
HTH in response to your reply about Faded V's surely it is down to trying out each individual guitar to find out how good/bad they are. I tried this guitar before buying and I found it to be fine. Admittedly what feels good to one person may not feel good to someone else, but on the whole I was happy with it. A couple of friends have tried it and also thought it was fine. I had it set up by a local guy who also thought it was ok too. Maybe I just got lucky with it,as I have read about quality issues with these guitars. So what do you not like about them?.
Cheers

I tried a couple of Double Cut Faded Les Paul Specials and they felt really cheap.  Very dry fingerboards, rough fret ends, sloppy neck joints etc.  They just felt "nasty".

Then again, I tried a faded V not too long ago and that had real character to its unplugged tone, and was put together really well.

I think there are good ones out there, but in my opinion the majority of them are quite poorly made.  They have to be if they're built in the US, shipped over here, VAT added and still come in around £500.

I don't like the unfinished look they have and I think they look cheap.

Like all Gibsons (and most others brands) they'll vary from guitar to guitar so you may have found an especially good one.

I don't like the neck joint on the faded series (or standard for that matter) Vees - the body should join the neck like the old Vees (and Epis), it just looks wierd otherwise.

I'm very skeptical that the faded series are any better than an Epi's - the pickups are certainly better, but the hardware is comparable and I doubt the wood is any different.  Basically paying for the Gibson name.

If I was looking for a Gibson at the £600 price point I'd go with one of those LP juniors or SG jr.
