Title: Over winding

What does over winding do to the sound of a pick-up?

Makes it worse, i think Tim said that you can only wind it so many times before it just starts sucking. He didn't say those exact words but that's the tone of it.
A slight over wind like the over wound Miracle Man to 23k that someone has on this forum is fine but to be honest you don't need to over wind a pickup anyways.

doesn't it compress the tone more and increase the output (if wound in moderation, as Joe said!)?

Yes it does, but you can't over wind too much otherwise you will lose the good sound.

You don't need over winds though, the pickups are hot enough already.

but we're assuming that he wants overwinds, which he may not, but it can be done.

That would be me.

I asked tim to up the power to warpig levels or higher if possible, rather than ask for a specific DC. What came back was 23k, so I guess thats the highest Tim would judge to still sound good. What you or I may think is another matter, but I trust Tims judgment on such things. Its quite mosterous, and sounds fantastic.

If you want to know what a heavily overwound pickup sounds like, try and get your hands on a MkI kent armstrong motherbucker. A mate of mine has one and it clocks in at about 45k (according to the box it came in), four conductor. Its very powerfull, but its also muddy and extremely compressed. 45/23 ~ 2 and its DEFINATELY not twice as high gain as my WPs or overwound miracle man (though there are other factors involved, it may not have that many more turns on it, but have thinner wire). I've tried the MM through his amp, and the MB has more low end, but if anything sounds less hot. And nowhere near as good. The current MkIIs are about 28k, and I cant comment because I havent tried one.

what would be the dc resistance of a bridge alnico miracle man to match the neck version?
22k?
the usual is 18k ceramic (b) x 17k alnico (n), right?

What if you wanted an Alnico pup that was somewhere between a HD and a WP? Would the required overwind destroy the essence of the HD and as an alternative, could you underwind a WP instead?

You can probably tell I'm not very knowledgeable about this  :?

AFAIK the Warpig has thinner wire than the Holy Diver. Maybe you could use roughly the same number of turns but a different wire gauge for each coil - the specs would be somewhere between the HD and the WP but the sound would probably be quite different. I'm sure Tim has experimented with such things before, though.

Mmmm, so the fact that he hasn't produced a pickup that is somewhere between the two suggests that the experiment simply didn't work.

yeah i'm sure many people want pickups that are compromises between two. and i'm sure tim has tried, but didn't feel they were BK worthy.
