Title: pickups for my SG
Post by: funkyfutuwista on March 28, 2007, 08:14:28 AM
i just bought a japanese line epiphone in nitro finished white.

ive heard the pups in it are stock asian electronics unlike the elitist range which use gibby pups. plan to change them anyway just like all my other guitars.

i play hardcore/post-hardcore/metal and some lighter indie rock. i play through a older 2 channel mesa DR.

i prefer a warm, thick yet articulate and detailed sound. bass has to be tight enough for chugs and start-stop riffs. squeals should fly off the fretboard. i do not want to sacrifice my cleans and mid-gain tones too much, but i have singlecoil axe for those purposes tho.

tones i love: thursday (full collapse) and thrice (taita). great ballsy stuff, and they use SGs too at some point.

what should i look for? would a high gain pup work for me? i know SGs are really picky about pickups.

I'd say a Nailbomb for you :)

Hmmm... I'd take a guess at Painkiller/Miracle Man.  Warpigs can be popular but might be too dark in a mahogany guitar (so I was told, so I pass it on) - in any case you'd be sacrificing top end with them - you could try Ceramic Warpigs though...
I'm currently thinking about  pickups for an SG (that I haven't got yet) to replace a Strat (that I have) with Trilogy Suites in (great tone, btw) and I'm torn between Painkillers and a Ceramic Warpig in the bridge and Painkillers in the middle and neck positions...

Well 1st bro i think i recognioze you from Soft. And i also recently got a set of BKPO for my SG. It is really picky with pickups as it is can turn out muddy if you put in the wrong pickups. So my recommendation is email Tim , he will reply u quick. And also consider pickups that is either low output or very high output. The medium is normally the one that will mud out in an SG. So Nailbomb may not be a wise choice, but search the forum there are clips done of SG loaded with Nailbombs.

High gain wise, Tim recommended me the Warpigs for my SG and they are superb for dark, heavy stuff and work very well in the SG - great bass response and mids with some squeal at the top end (although not as much as some other BKPs). However you should be aware that you will not get a good clean tone with a Warpig without turning the pickup volume right down, which is a pain when playing live.

Nailbombs seem very popular in SGs round these parts, and give a more modern metal sound than the warpigs, which in Tim's words have "an ultra thick Iommi tone" :) Plus as they are lower gain, you get cleaner cleans.

heh, i intially planned to get the nailbombs for my schecter, but that guitar is gone now  :o

warpigs, they still seem abit over the top for me man. i want a decent clean tone to work with without tinkling with the volume pot.

where do i email tim btw?

For the bands you listed.  I'd say Nailbomb.

As for SG and Nailbomb.  See link.  Got top stars in an SG.

Based on that description, I can see why Tim suggested the RY.  It'll do all those things (although I'd describe it as "big" rather than "thick").  And I'm sure it's bright/clear enough not to mud out in an SG.

I'm not too familiar with Thursday or Thrice though, heard a couple of tracks but can't remember what the guitar sounds are like.
