Title: My Bloody iPod
Post by: plastercaster on March 28, 2007, 06:09:11 PM
Just to vent some steam
My bloody Ipod has just broken. This is the 3rd time in just over a year. I am 4 weeks out of warranty and this iPod cost me £180. There is no response from it at all, and from the looks of it I'm going to need to spend £70 to repair it, and its barely worth that.
GAAHHH!!!
Anyone here who can recommend an MP3 player that is actually designed to survive the rigours of being put in my pocket and playing music?

from what i've heard, almost all i-pods do that
as far as a different mp3 player is concerned, i've got an i-river, it's slightly bulkier that an i-pod, but quite a bit cheaper.

My daughters ipod died 2 weeks after the warranty ran out

3 other friends also had similar failures between a week & a month after warranty expiration

Am I paranoid ?

Try the mp3 players from Creative, mine has held up for a year so far without any problems at all (including my wife being convinced it's a tennis ball)

Oh sod it don't say that guys, mine is nearing a year old and I spent weeks copying my cds. I have one of the 60g jobs too. I'm depending on it to get me through my flight to USA in a couple of weeks.

i didn't get an iPod because it was too expensive.

CREATIVE RULE! 3 of my close mates have Creatives, i also have an old creative 512 megabyte jobby that i got off one of those 3 before he upgraded to a higher space Creative. it must be 3 or 4 years old now, and still going perfectly strong, no problems at all! best Mp3 players IMO. that same friend is selling his new one AGAIN soon and he is going to sell me his for about 20 quid

depending where you bought it, the fact that it broke so often may persuade them to give you a new one free of charge. it mightn't hurt to check teh OFT website, either.

I know if I bought something that broke 3 times within a year, and then just outisde the warranty, I'd be raising hell with the shop and/or apple (best make it the shop first, that's who you have the contract with).

It's worth a shot. it worked with our TV and currys, and ours broke 3 times withing 5 years.

Sony!!!

software is a little annoying at first (not as bad as everyone says once you get used to it)...

but they never break.... VERY reliable...

and great sound quality too.

Just to add (and this is not a rant at anyone here, don't worry), if every time something broke just outside warranty, more people fought it (i.e. if you fork over £200, which is about an average week's wages, it shouldn't break 2 days outside warranty), companies wouldn't fob us off with such cr@p. they only get away with it because for every one person who fights it, loads don't. (to be fair, i've heard apple have been less than nice to deal with when their stuff kicks the bucket, on programmes like watchdog etc.)

In addition, I'd never buy another of their products again, and let them know that.

It's not just home users that get treated like sh1t by apple, corporate users and official apple dealers are regularly screwed by them also.

Sad thing is that if Microsoft behaved as badly the nerds would rise up against them and goverments would decend upon them.

Several friends have been treated very badly by apple while within the warranty period, and worse after it expires. Thankfully there are still some helpful resellers in the world.

Still now that they claim to be a consumer goods company rather than a computer company, things will change (and apple wont like it).

BTW Sony & Creative products seem to sound better (I'm not blind bigotry, I'm a pragmatist in those matters), Battery life is also much better

Hmmm...
Can I just say that my iPod's been ok. Had it over a year now, and the only problem is that it needs resetting on odd occasions when it won't go to sleep...
Oh, the other problem is that it's nearly full (30Gb) and will probably need replacing in a few months. And yes, it gets used every day.

i've got a creative Zen Vision M, my sister has an ipod.  the ipod has broken once and been replaced, been fine since, although it's only been three months yet.  the Zen is generally good, but sometimes it will play tracks with crackly distortion, if i skip to the start of the track it plays fine but it shouldn't be happening.  also, on random play if you turn it back on after a while it doesn't remember where it was and starts over again, the ipod will run through it's entire contents one song at a time even if it takes weeks!

i think all players have pros and cons, we hear a lot of horror stories about ipods, but that's possibly just because there are so many of them out there!  my biggest objection to apple is their monopoly mindset, if you buy from itunes it will only play on an ipod.  that's why i won't buy one.

lol i dont think theyre utter shitee at all...

+1 on everything Blue said..

i had a blue mini, and really loved it for a long time.... never broke, never had ANY problems with it, sounded great with some upgraded headphones, had enough features for me...

but in the end i just wanted a smaller, less expensive flash player, so got a little Sony 1GB thingy...

and hunter- you work for sony or something!??! cooool!

what rob said- battery life of sonys is awesome.... and because of the formatting 1GB on a Sony can hold a lot more than you might think

The problem with bigger ipod's is that it's a hard drive, not a flash drive... it's got moving parts, it's bound to break.

If i were to get an iPod again, it'd have to be one of the ipod nano's, im sure they're far more durable as they have no moving parts.

yeah, for some reason apple are assumed to be "cool"... I know I wouldn't buy an IPod after what I've heard on programmes like watchdog etc.

Bit late for Mrs 38th and me-we have two-she has the 80 bloody gig version too.  Moving ever so slightly off topic, anyone seen those Tascam MP GT1 gizmos?

Well on the other side of things they are easy to open (Dunlop yellow tortex picks do the business), and theres several people who offer replacment drives and batterys. Who are much cheaper than apple.

My creative also uses a harddrive, but whereas my daughters iPod spun the drive almost constantly, the creatives only spin the drives up for much shorter periods. They also use a drive that is designed to behave like this (certainly the earlier apples definately didn't do this)

Blue : that could be the problem you are having, have you updated the firmware recently (make sure you back the bugger up first though)

You can't beat the Sony Walkmen NWA (not Niggers with attitude may I add!). Slightly heavier than an ipod but as yet has never broken down crashed or donw anything than be bloody great. It's only a 1 colour screen though so if you want videos it's not for you, but if you want great sounding music than this is it!

i never got the whole "video on a 1" screen" idea.... never appealed to me personally at all...

same with PSPs... these amazingly detailed graphics on a 6" screen... so.... annoying... theyre fun to play on every now and then... but id just get frustrated with the fiddley-ness after a while.

Less durable if the rugby captain sits on them though...
On one gegography fieldtrip we had
2 waterlogged MP3 players and phone
one nano sat on and broke in half
and about 4 that slid out of pockets onto the beach by durdle door.
To add insult to injury, not only did we not get to see lulworth cove because the fog was terrible so our journey and tech-sacrifice was all in vain, the other group got beautiful weather.
