I really wish I could play the harmonica (blues harp). The sound of a blues harp played well through a bullet mic gets to me every time. I love the instrument. I tried it but I really suck at it.
Are there any insruments you wish you could play but suck at?
-
sax, I guess. my sister tried it for a while in school, i had a quick go, but I don't really get along with wind instruments... :(
maybe violin.
other than that, I'm pretty happy. I can play drums, guitar and piano, those are most of my faves right there.
-
i play a little bit of piano on top of guitar...
but id love to be able to play it "properly"... some piano pieces are incredible
harmonica is a cool choice as well.
nice thread!
-
Guitar.....
-
Acordian :(
-
Ratty maybe you should blow at it. I play bass and guitar-bass better than guitar in fact. I can play chords and stuff on piano but would love to be able to do it properly like my son can and I can play really basic drum rhythms and I have played mandolin on a track years ago after 2 days intensive practice. I am Grade 8 on Spoons.
-
Although it's not technically an instrument ( ;) ) I'd like to be able to play the drums. I've got no chance - not enough co-ordination!
-
piano
-
I'd love to play piano. One of the most beutiful sounding instruments other than the guitar.
-
I will say piano, but only so as I can build myself up to a old Hammond B series or a damn big church organ with a low end that can truely shake the ground
-
id say the guitar.
i've owned a guitar for a few years, but i can't truly 'play' it.
i can't sit there and come up with a riff or melody, i can't perform something of my own to anyone... i can passably play some other peoples stuff though!
id love to play the piano aswell, i did dabble with a keyboard, but again, never became a player.
-
Violin or a baritone Saxophone (well sax in general)
-
Guitar
Lute
Fiddle
-
Uilleann Pipes, they have such a haunting tone and in the right hands sound amazing. In my hands they sound like a cat fight or a set of Bradford lasses in the centre of town after closing time (possibly the sound I hate most in the world :P )

Yeah, Piano doesn't do it for me, but I'd love to be able to play something on a massive organ.
quiet sambo.

You can blow or suck, it's a semitone diference.
Another instrument I would like to learn is the bagpipes. I never tried it so I can't really say if I have any talent for it.
-
lol. I have a harp that I bought in NYC but I am not that good at it-can't seem to get to grips with it either. Yeah bagpipes-I love em too-especially en masse-very stirring.Must be Scottish blood in me somewhere.
-
[Another instrument I would like to learn is the bagpipes. I never tried it so I can't really say if I have any talent for it.
If you're good at multi-tasking, then you should be good at bagpipes, because you don't 'blow' a note with it, you keep the bag full of air, and your arm pushes the air across the reed. Oh, and the other bit is just like a recorder :p
I wish I could play the Pipe Organ, and the Violin :)
-
Piano!
-
I plan to have a piano oneday!
-
Everyone should learn piano, it makes it way easier to understand theory, cos it's physically such a linear instrument. Not to mention it's so damn versatile. I've finished my 8th grade in piano and i'm still loving it. It's also way cheaper to play piano than guitar, no need for gear upgrades, tube replacements, new strings every month, picks, etc.
AND it makes you appreciate jazz and classical music, which is great.
I'd like to be able to play drums (well). I can play a few basic beats and fills, but i'm worse than useless with a double kick  .
-
I bought a dvd about Polychords and Extensions a few years ago. The guy explained everything using the piano which I'm glad cause I understood it easier than if he would of explained it using a guitar.
I took Music Theory in High School. We had to learn the keys on piano. All I know how to do is play chords and the major scale but that was 14 years ago.
-
yup piano is very usefull, (unlike mandolin for me-ain't too bad on it...or the violin still can't grasp that...or the accordian I inherited.very wierd)
Wish I could play the sax, harmonica (and the mandolin like Chris Thile)
-

+1, but what a crazy contraption! What other instrument requires independent movement of both hands, a palm, elbow and a knee!?
I got a low whistle instead - another soulful Irish instrument, but one that's very easy to get started with. Sounds a bit like a flute, but without all the valves and that tricky blowing-over-a-hole malarky.
If you're interested in the Irish whistle (or if you just fancy a good laugh) surf on over to this utterly bonkers whistle-obsessed web site:

I want to play a BKP'd Xylophone!

My son was learning to play the lyre a while back (they have an excellent sound) and I did have the thought of an Electric Lyre

Thats a organ that could make up the major part of a film set (Brazil would have been perfect)
Oh yeah

I'll have to say some form of wind pipe.
Not really the flute. But something like the panpipes or a japanese stlye of windpipe (dont know the name).
Oh and the guitar. 5 yeras now and I play as well as I type.
"with 2 fingers on each hand and lots of mistakes"

Drums - moving all 4 limbs separately - majorly difficult!!

Guitar : 2 arms, 8 fingers and 2 thumbs to control

LOL... I like your sense of humour
-
I used to be able to play the drums and had a go last year (after not picking up a drum stick for about 10 years) - I was absolutely terrible, so yeah, I wish I could play drums again.
Guitar - I know a million chords but there's just something wrong with my right hand. It seems to only be able to strum 1 tune  I own more guitars than songs I can play

And (if you're playing blues) your face.
-
^ Heh, Steve Vai is one talented dude, he can control all ten fingers, both arms, feet for effects, his face, AND he can make his hair fly up all on its own :P
-
Bagpipes, Lute, Orchestral Harp, Banjo!
-
Violin/fiddle, any kind of bagpipe, and congas!
Heh, I'd like to be able to play guitar and bass, too .... :)
-
synth, harmonica, violin
-
Actually thinking about it, I'd like to be able to play play fretless bass really well

I just thought of another instrument I'd like to play. It's the upright bass. I'll have to learn normal bass first.
Maybe you've read I'm fixing up an old Hofner 182 short scale bass. I'll have to see if I have any talent for bass.
Since I've been working on it I do get GAS attacks for a Rickenbacker bass.

Hmmm Ric basses, have a look at this stock list http://www.ricsrus.com/4000.php
(well I had to prove that I'm a proper cultist)

yeah, I've got my cultist credentials out for this one. :)
It's no secret that I'm a Rick bass fan: http://www.carlaz.com/images/carl_in_concert_2005.jpg 8)
They're pretty instruments, give you that Lemmy/Geddy/McCartney/Squire/etc. vibe, and are very playable, especially for a transplanted guitarist. I dunno, something about the neck or something always made Rics fit easily into my hands, and I can find my way around them while my fingers stumble all over other basses. (Well, they stumble on the Rick, too, just not as bad! ;))
-
I can't help it. I've been struck by the Ric-GAS-bug. I'm drooling over pictures of 360's too.
-
+1 on the Rics.
I was a bassist in my first couple of bands, always had a thing for a good bass :) One gig at a place that was usually a dance club, they plugged me direct into the clubs PA ... man those bass drivers could move some air!
-

I had Ric GAS for 25 years before I managed to do something about it. Now to take it to perfection I think I need the neck pickup rewound as it is a little 'muddy' (but the Eggle needs some pickups first)
Though the thought of a 620 or 650 models are real nice <sigh>
I just love the sound of the Ric bass (the WAL family of basses come a close 2nd though)

BANJO!!!!!! all the way. I had a go on a mates and i just wanted to rip into some dueling banjo's
-
Actually, I was thinking about one of those Variax Acoustic things that models banjos (just because it would be cheaper than buying a giant pile of instruments that I can't afford). Cheating, I know -- but it would supply me with the sound of a bunch of toys at once, including banjo and sitar! 8)
-
My brother has one Carlaz-good fun-as you say, whole bunch of toys to play with. The acoustic guitar simulations are not bad too but I used it in a studio for the mandolin and resonator sounds and it held up fine in a mix.
