hi all
it turns out there is one of these just down the road here in Devon on ebay, but does anyone know if it is any good?
it is one of the older valvestates, i know that.
the amp in the auction has 1 knob missing and a loose speaker output, but the other output should be fine
also, does this amp have 2 speaker outs? if so, then how many cable do you need to hook an amp with 2 speaker outs into a 2x12 combo?
thanks all :)
-
Hey dude i have this exact amp well stack, and if you can get one for a good price get it.... theyre really good and made in england unlike some marshall cr@p today.... there's 2 speaker outs on the back obviously for 2 cabs.... though i only have the one.... plus they get great reviews for being reliable as f*ck....
-
I've always thought as the AVT series as very over priced and hype with the preamp tube. IMHO the only good Marshall is a tube Marshall but even nowadays they have quality control issues. If's a really good deal and you know it sounds good, snag it.
If you've never even played through it I wouldn't bother, theres nothing worse then buying an amp you don't like and have to re-sell it. Talk about a waste of time, not to mention the price of the newer (now discontinued) series AVT you can get a real tube amp around the same price.
Yes, you heard me. Marshall no longer makes the AVT series.

it's not an AVT, it's a valvestate. before they invented AVT.
and they don't do AVTs anymore, no. they do AVTX, which is essentially the same thing.
i don't think i'll bother, i havent heard it, and there wasn't much time left when i last looked so.....
-
the original Valvestate heads were pretty decent - I had one as a backup when I was last gigging reguarly (only paid £50 for it)
-
I think you should get it, when i tried a valvestate Marshall i liked it and didn't see what all that hate was about, you will probably be able to get a great metal sound from it, and if you don't you can just use an OD pedal with it.
GET IT AND END THE SEARCH!
-
I had a Valvestate amp when I was a kid. Pretty decent amp; the overdrives from it weren't crunchy, they were more like a fuzz on mine.
Cleans were pretty decent too.
I've played through an AVT recently and that was OK - but too many buttons!
-
ok Joe, calm down!
i don't want a fuzzy distortion......
it ends in 2 days, so maybe i could go down there tomorrow or the day after, but i doubt my parents would take me.......
thanks for the info :)
-
I think it's a great step-up amp, somewhere between those tiny amps you were looking at and a pro rig. It will definitely play loud enough (and have enough articulation) for gigging, tho.
One spkr out into the mono or 'use first' input of a 2x12. Have the loose jack fixed in case you get another cab, and also less to worry about down the road.
-
I had 1 of the older Valvestates (an 8040 1x12 combo I think it was) as my 1st amp.
I remember it sounding ok, definitely better than the Karaoke Machine I was using previously

It's the same idea and design. A single tube used in the preamp making it a hybrid amp.

yeah. thanks for the info, i was thinking about buying it then getting it fixed.....
would it react to a Tubescreamer as a valve amp would?
also, would it sound too much like my damned-to-hell MG?
thanks guys :D
EDIT: heres the link to the auction:

it says 4 Ohms, so would a Framus 2x12 work with it?

How many OHMs is the cabinet?
-
it says "100 Watt Mono 8 Ohm" in the description:

can anyone help me with some of my above questions please?

i doubt it'll sound much better than ur MG. Save up and get what you really want or you'll regret it later...

hmmm everyone else says it will sound good...... and it's only 50 quid.... and in flames used them at one point before they got into 5150s...
anyone else, do you think Indysmith is right?

I'm not saying it WON'T sound good, i'm saying i doubt it will sound very good compared to many other things, which you havent tried yet. You havent tried this out either; and i don't think anyone else on here has. could be cr@p. One day you'll want a valve amp; i think you know that. And then you're going to be thinking "why the hell did i waste £50 on this piece of shite?" that's if you don't right after you first try it that is...
-
these days £50 barely buys a basic ss amp so I say go for it. one thing I can guarantee is it WILL sound miles better than your mg

encouraging!
hey Indy, some people here have tried the old valvestates, just read the rest of the thread!
-
argh! i hate to be the scrooge! go ahead, do it. Chances are it'll be alright. Just upset me that before you were looking at the awesome ENGL screamer, and now we're looking at an old battered solid state marshall... It's got some encouraging reviews on HC http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Guitar+Amp/product/Marshall/Valvestate+8100/10/1
(not that that's anything to go by really, but still...)
"Sound Quality : 10
LOUD AS shite!!! GUARANTEED TO HAVE THE POLICE SHOW UP!!! "
oh dear god...
-
i hate to be the scrooge! go ahead, do it.
heh, you always seem to hate whatever i suggest :D of course, unless it is a JCM900......
the only problem with buying this head is the prospect of a cab. i will not have a cab to try it with, therefore i would need to buy one. then, what if the head sounds shitee???? although i'm guessing it won't but you can never be too careful......
perhaps if that was the case, i could sell it and buy a new better head i suppose.......
EDIT: just saw your edit, and i see your point with the ENGL....... now that you put it into perspective, i'm having second thoughts...
-
heh, you always seem to hate whatever i suggest :D of course, unless it is a JCM900......
Really? i don't even particularly like the JCM900s for anything but chainsaw punk sounds. :P
i don't mean to go against ur suggestions - yu just seem to choose things i don't like the sound of. We probably just have differing tastes
-
yeah, exactly. but should i take this chance? it looks like good nick apart from the knob and the speaker out....... and it gets good reliability reviews too. i wish i had time after school to try it out, but i have to work tomorrow night, and the night after that will be too late, unless it doesn't sell :(
-
if you can get that amp for £50 then you really can't go wrong - you'd be struggling to get a decent distortion box for that kind of cash.
when you do have cash to get something else/different/better then you can always keep the Valvestate for a gig spare - not worth selling a £50 amp imo. I remember my old VS saving our arses at gigs when valve amps went down - even did a passable job for bass.

If you have an MG series then I say go for it, it'll sound loads better then the MG. I would know, i've compared them together and they do make a difference.
Good luck.

You could always make an offer for that and his DSL 50 as an all in package
It may encourage him to sell to ya quicker.
Rob...
-
NP: that's pickup only, unfortunately. i saw it before when browsing Marshalls that were local pickup only......
WC: thanks dude, i think i will!
HTH: thanks for the encourgaging words, i'm pretty sure i'm going to get it...
who can help me with the cab problem? should i just buy it, buy a cab, then hope for the best? or should i try playing it through my MG combo's speakers?
thanks all :D
-
Is it easy to play a head through the speakers of a combo?
I'm guessing you need to open it up etc?
-

apparently, if the speaker cables are visible, then you can just plug the cables into the amp head and ONLY turn the amp (not the combo) on.......
-
FOR F*CKS SAKE!!!! WHO OWNS THIS F*CKING THING!!!! ME!!!! GET THE F*CKER!! AND YES IT SOUNDS WAY BETTER THAN ANY MG SERIES ALL OF THEM.... £50 FOR A MADE IN ENGLAND MARSHALL HEAD AND YOU HAVENT BOUGHT IT YET!!!! GET IT NOWWWWWWWWWWWW!
sorry for the craziness but i actually own the thing so listen to me instead of people who have never played one or have played one for 5 minutes....
-
I AM GOING TO!!!! it's got 3 bids though...... shite! it's only at 62 quid now, but i hope it doesn't go higher!!!!
what is a reasonable price to pay for this amp?
-
WHAT?!
It's £50????
I thought it was like £200 - £250!!
I can't believe you haven't got it yet.
Edit: apparently Chuck Shuldiner used this amp and Meshuggah used the 200 watt versions!
-
yeah it's 50, but it's pickups only
damnit, it's 72 now!
yeah, Chuck used them, but i can't trust that dude on the Meshuggah thing..... perhaps it's true :)
as i said, how high should i go?
-
I don't know how much it is worth but to be honest i can't see it going over £200, it depends how much you want to spend. If you are an experienced ebayer or if you play it right then you could get it for about 150, but as i said i don't know how much it is worth and i don't know what the demand for it is and i don't know how much you have to spend
-
hehe, i have over 300 really, and they are on high demand i guess, but it's local pickup, so that narrows it down a lot. should go for about 100-120...... hopefully :D
-
Buy it man, I was thinking of getting one of these. In Flames used this on Jesters Race as well. Loads of DM bands loved this amp.
-
oooo jesters race = quality tone
-
yeah i'll buy it. i just hope i can convince my parents to let me bid higher :D
-
oooo jesters race = quality tone
You think so?
They had a much more nasaly tone back then - I prefer the 5150 tone to be frank.
-
I like it, Whoracle tone is the best. Best In Flames in every way actually.
-
I like it, Whoracle tone is the best. Best In Flames in every way actually.
Switching from Jester to Whoracle you can hear how much tighter their tone is - It's quite funny actually.
Tis a good album indeed, but I still have to admit I'm one of the idiots that like their new stuff more - Pinball Map / Embody the Invisible / Cloud Connected / Clayman - Although I do love Episode 666.
-
Man Made God FTW! first In Flames song i heard, great tone. which album is that from?
-
Gyroscope is the best In Flames song ever, so good to play on guitar! I don't like anything past Clayman.
-

Colony.

Reroute To Remain - Freaking amazing album imo, love every song on it.
Come Clarity - Has it's moments, Versus Terminus, Crawl through Knives, Reflect the Storm and Come Clarity are all ace songs.
Personally not a fan of Soundtrack to Your Escape, I just don't get it - That being said, The Quiet Place, Touch of Red, My Sweet Shadow and In Search for I are great.
-

yeah!! love Gyroscope! and Lord Hypnos.
i love all in flames
EDIT: played my MG today, it's a fart machine!!!
so the 8100 wont be a fart machine?
-
I bought the Come Clarity CD and deear god!!! It sucks, it sounds like the hardcore cr@p being played at Ozzfest all the time. I was extremely dissapointed.
-
In Flames - Hardcore? Wtf?
Come Clarity is alot of things, modern, mainstream, newish, but it isn't a blast beating grindcore wannabe..
-
Bloodmountain! Get in the zone, it ends in 12 minutes! This is as good as yours!
-

I'm not sure man, around here that cr@p is REALLY popular. And when I put in the CD and skimmed around the songs it really reminded me of that stuff.
-
It's popular here too, but all the hardcore people I know HATE In Flames xD
-
did yu win?
-
£95.51
Did you win???!!!
-
I wanna hit him if he didn't :p

i $%ing did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOOOOOOOO!!! The search is over!!!!
-
About time ^_^
-
WOOOOOOOO!!! The search is over!!!!
aye! just need a cab now :D
cheers indy!
i don't know when i'm going to collect, i have 1 and a half days left of school, so friday or possibly thursday.......
how could i plug it inot the back of my combo, just for a listen?
-
Ah no, i can tell this cab search will go on for ages!
-
Ah no, i can tell this cab search will go on for ages!
hahahahahahah!
nah, there is a lot less choice. i want a cheap ish 2x12 with V30s. any takers? i'm thinking Framus 2x12
-
i'm thinking Framus 2x12
done.
-
Done indeed.
Now people.
Engl Screamer combo or head?
If I get the head I won't have enough to afford a combo yet, but could play through my cheap Vox combo for a month untill I can afford a Framus 2x12.
Either that, or does anyone have a Cab being sold at £50~?
-
thankyou, matey!
my dad thinks that 95 quid for an amp head is a lot of money
-
 what a noob
-
 what a noob
yeah!!
he often says a lot of bullshitee, like "a magnet is a magnet to me" (in pickups context) and he loves the sound of my MG.
-
hey, i also would like to know one thing: is it a good idea to stand a 2x12 cab vertically instead of horizontally?
-
Sorry, I've skipped the past 4 pages. PDT_008
Was a decision reached?

i would prefer it that way: it has more projection. i will experiment when i get it.

after the cab, it's next on my list
plus i will sell my dimebucker to fund it :)

So a razorback, a 2x12 cab with Marshall head and a Warpig.
Dude, you will kill at ten paces. Sweeeeeeet.
Take off and nuke the site from orbit, its the only way to be sure ...

-
right: one last unsolved mystery. the auction description says "100Watts @ 4Ohms". the Framus says 8 Ohms (i think). does this mean they will not work together? if they won't, then which 2x12 cab will?
-
no i don't think it will match unless it's switchable to 8 ohms.
A 2x12 with two 8ohm speakers will be a 4 ohm cabinet
-
Hmm if I could recommend cabinets for you, it would be...
www.avatarspeakers.com
You pick the skins and tolex YOU want, any color I believe and you can also pick any celestian speaking of your choice and they do use Birch Ply Wood. Very A+++ quality cabinets and they're a BARGAIN too! Check it out!!
-
dude jut checked mine and i dont think its switchable from 4ohms, i just have a lovely marshall 4x12 cab filled with celestions

Look great, but don't ship internationally.
-
I think the Marshall 1936 + 1922 2x12's are Mono 4ohm, but they come with Celestion G12t-75's. I think I'd prefer Vintage 30's but its personal preference. Zilla Cabs in Cornwall make custom 2x12's but they aren't that cheap. They have some empty cabs on sale at the mo on eBay for around £180. Just try and grab a really beat up old JCM800/900 Marshall 2x12 as they are UK made, not chinese. EDIT: I did read somewhere that providing the amp head ohmage is lower than the cab you are fine, so a 4 ohm amp into 8 ohm cab might be ok, BUT PLEASE research that first, I don't want to be the cause of blown amps.
-
It's a transitor head so no problem plugin it into an 8 ohms cab, it'll just be less loud (something like 40% less)
-
I was gonna recommend a Zilla cab too.
£275 loaded with any speakers.
Although I can get it at trade price cos I know the guy 8)
-

+1, what he said. Tranny heads just have a minimum impedance - anything higher will just fail to deliver the full rated power. This is common on most tranny combo amps where the speaker is rated higher than the minimum impeance required to achieve the full power rating.
the Framus 2x12 with V30s will be perfect with the Valvestate (moreso than any cab with GasT-75s imo as they have less midrange).
-
so no problems then?
i'm picking it up tomorrow PM
how would i plug it into my combo's speakers???? i can see 2 red ended speaker cables both plugged into the amp section of my MG........ does each one govern each speaker?
-
update: the head is here!!!! picked it up just now. the seller was this awesome rocker dude with long hair, and he had an 80s Marshall of some sort.... looked like a JMP to me. also, he lives above a guitar shop.... rock on!
he is in a band called Morph, http://www.morphrock.co.uk.
now for the amp itself..... it sounded great in his house! can't wait to whck it up with my razorback
it looks very good, only one knob missing, the gold panel is slightly worn which looks cool  and the tolex is also worn.... awesome!
it has some neat little features like 2 modes per channel, and the effects loop is on the front for convenience, and has a mix knob and a loop level cut switch.
BUT
the best feature about this head, besides the valve in the preamp, is that THE GAIN KNOB GOES TO 20!!!!! thats 9 louder
as i said, i can't wait to hear it, but i will need to figure out how to use my combo as a cab first.....

Did someone just put a 20 point knob on it?

Did someone just put a 20 point knob on it?
no, the gain says that it goes 0-20, but i think it is just for show. it works as normal, but i have the knowledge that it is on 20 while playing
i saw another pic on the web and that too had a 0-20 gain knob :D

Just listened to all of Come Clarity and frankly I kinda know what you mean.
Songs like Scream and Vacuum are just plain... cr@p =/

i love Scream! kill the unbelievers! :P
my dad and i took my 8100 to bits (well, just took the amp part out) and we fixed the broken speaker jack: it was only a loose dry joint!
so could i plug the two speaker calbes from my MG's speakers into the 8100 now? would it destroy my 8100?
-
More likely to destroy your MG speaker than the Amp.
-
More likely to destroy your MG speaker than the Amp.
why?

I dunno how you would blow an amp using the Output socket :P
You could blow the speaker if the impedence of the amp is above that of the speaker.

eh? sorry, i don't get that.....

the speakers are Minimum 8Ohms each, and the amp is 4Ohms so it should be fine.

-
One thing I'd say is don't be dissapointed if the amp sounds cr@p, those MG speakers are pretty rubbish, plus being open-backed it won't have a killer bass-response either. Until you get a decent cab and speakers you won't find out how it truly sounds. Again my recommendation is something with V30's. Thomann.de do that Framus 2x12 for £200 or they also do a Harley Benton with V30's for about £130, and its apparently made of 16mm ply so its already better than current Marshall cabs! Either that or you can pick up V30's from Award Session at the mo for £44 each which is an amazing deal. Maybe you could pick up a decent unloaded cab off ebay?

Thomann.de do that Framus 2x12 for £200 or they also do a Harley Benton with V30's for about £130, and its apparently made of 16mm ply so its already better than current Marshall cabs! Either that or you can pick up V30's from Award Session at the mo for £44 each which is an amazing deal. Maybe you could pick up a decent unloaded cab off ebay?
ok. i thought that it wouldn't sound that good, and your right, the bass response sucks :D
I'm seriously considering the Framus, but an unloaded cab would be a great idea. if there were any. i've looked, but can only find ONE 4x12 empty cab. can you find any?

You don't need a 4x12, get a 2x12. Just keep looking on ebay, Marshall 1936 2x12's are always going for cheap on ebay. That's what i got, got myn for about £120 i think.

i know, i meant the only empty cab is a 4x12 which i don't want, and i was asking if he could find any empty 2x12s.
i might get a marshall and upgrade the speakers.... it's a thought...

ok, i have been told that you can plug a cable from the fx send of my Valvestate into the fx return of the MG...... would that work???
it would use the Valvestate's preamp and the MGs poweramp so most of the tone will be from my Valvestate......
has anyone tried this? i don't want to try it and have amps blowing up.....
thanks dudes :D
