Title: Marshall Valvestate 8100 (PICS ADDED!)
Post by: BloodMountain on March 31, 2007, 11:41:48 PM
hi all
it turns out there is one of these just down the road here in Devon on ebay, but does anyone know if it is any good?
it is one of the older valvestates, i know that.

the amp in the auction has 1 knob missing and a loose speaker output, but the other output should be fine
also, does this amp have 2 speaker outs? if so, then how many cable do you need to hook an amp with 2 speaker outs into a 2x12 combo?

thanks all  :)

Hey dude i have this exact amp well stack, and if you can get one for a good price get it.... theyre really good and made in england unlike some marshall cr@p today.... there's 2 speaker outs on the back obviously for 2 cabs.... though i only have the one.... plus they get great reviews for being reliable as f*ck....

I've always thought as the AVT series as very over priced and hype with the preamp tube. IMHO the only good Marshall is a tube Marshall but even nowadays they have quality control issues. If's a really good deal and you know it sounds good, snag it.

If you've never even played through it I wouldn't bother, theres nothing worse then buying an amp you don't like and have to re-sell it. Talk about a waste of time, not to mention the price of the newer (now discontinued) series AVT you can get a real tube amp around the same price.

Yes, you heard me. Marshall no longer makes the AVT series.

it's not an AVT, it's a valvestate. before they invented AVT.

and they don't do AVTs anymore, no. they do AVTX, which is essentially the same thing.

i don't think i'll bother, i havent heard it, and there wasn't much time left when i last looked so.....

the original Valvestate heads were pretty decent - I had one as a backup when I was last gigging reguarly (only paid £50 for it)

I think you should get it, when i  tried a valvestate Marshall i liked it and didn't see what all that hate was about, you will probably be able to get a great metal sound from it, and if you don't you can just use an OD pedal with it.

GET IT AND END THE SEARCH!

I had a Valvestate amp when I was a kid. Pretty decent amp; the overdrives from it weren't crunchy, they were more like a fuzz on mine.

Cleans were pretty decent too.

I've played through an AVT recently and that was OK - but too many buttons!

ok Joe, calm down!

i don't want a fuzzy distortion......

it ends in 2 days, so maybe i could go down there tomorrow or the day after, but i doubt my parents would take me.......

thanks for the info  :)

I think it's a great step-up amp, somewhere between those tiny amps you were looking at and a pro rig. It will definitely play loud enough (and have enough articulation) for gigging, tho.

One spkr out into the mono or 'use first' input of a 2x12. Have the loose jack fixed in case you get another cab, and also less to worry about down the road.

I had 1 of the older Valvestates (an 8040 1x12 combo I think it was) as my 1st amp.

I remember it sounding ok, definitely better than the Karaoke Machine I was using previously

It's the same idea and design. A single tube used in the preamp making it a hybrid amp.

yeah. thanks for the info, i was thinking about buying it then getting it fixed.....

would it react to a Tubescreamer as a valve amp would?

also, would it sound too much like my damned-to-hell MG?

thanks guys  :D

I'm not saying it WON'T sound good, i'm saying i doubt it will sound very good compared to many other things, which you havent tried yet. You havent tried this out either; and i don't think anyone else on here has. could be cr@p. One day you'll want a valve amp; i think you know that. And then you're going to be thinking "why the hell did i waste £50 on this piece of shite?" that's if you don't right after you first try it that is...

argh! i hate to be the scrooge! go ahead, do it. Chances are it'll be alright. Just upset me that before you were looking at the awesome ENGL screamer, and now we're looking at an old battered solid state marshall... It's got some encouraging reviews on HC http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Guitar+Amp/product/Marshall/Valvestate+8100/10/1
(not that that's anything to go by really, but still...)

"Sound Quality :  10

heh, you always seem to hate whatever i suggest  :D of course, unless it is a JCM900......

the only problem with buying this head is the prospect of a cab. i will not have a cab to try it with, therefore i would need to buy one. then, what if the head sounds shitee???? although i'm guessing it won't but you can never be too careful......

perhaps if that was the case, i could sell it and buy a new better head i suppose.......

EDIT: just saw your edit, and i see your point with the ENGL....... now that you put it into perspective, i'm having second thoughts...

i don't mean to go against ur suggestions - yu just seem to choose things i don't like the sound of. We probably just have differing tastes

yeah, exactly. but should i take this chance? it looks like good nick apart from the knob and the speaker out....... and it gets good reliability reviews too. i wish i had time after school to try it out, but i have to work tomorrow night, and the night after that will be too late, unless it doesn't sell  :(

if you can get that amp for £50 then you really can't go wrong - you'd be struggling to get a decent distortion box for that kind of cash.

when you do have cash to get something else/different/better then you can always keep the Valvestate for a gig spare - not worth selling a £50 amp imo.  I remember my old VS saving our arses at gigs when valve amps went down - even did a passable job for bass.

I don't know how much it is worth but to be honest i can't see it going over £200, it depends how much you want to spend. If you are an experienced ebayer or if you play it right then you could get it for about 150, but as i said i don't know how much it is worth and i don't know what the demand for it is and i don't know how much you have to spend

Switching from Jester to Whoracle you can hear how much tighter their tone is - It's quite funny actually.

Tis a good album indeed, but I still have to admit I'm one of the idiots that like their new stuff more - Pinball Map / Embody the Invisible / Cloud Connected / Clayman - Although I do love Episode 666.

Reroute To Remain - Freaking amazing album imo, love every song on it.

Come Clarity - Has it's moments, Versus Terminus, Crawl through Knives, Reflect the Storm and Come Clarity are all ace songs.

Personally not a fan of Soundtrack to Your Escape, I just don't get it - That being said, The Quiet Place, Touch of Red, My Sweet Shadow and In Search for I are great.

Done indeed.

Now people.

Engl Screamer combo or head?

If I get the head I won't have enough to afford a combo yet, but could play through my cheap Vox combo for a month untill I can afford a Framus 2x12.

Either that, or does anyone have a Cab being sold at £50~?

right: one last unsolved mystery. the auction description says "100Watts @ 4Ohms". the Framus says 8 Ohms (i think). does this mean they will not work together? if they won't, then which 2x12 cab will?

no i don't think it will match unless it's switchable to 8 ohms.
A 2x12 with two 8ohm speakers will be a 4 ohm cabinet

I think the Marshall 1936 + 1922 2x12's are Mono 4ohm, but they come with Celestion G12t-75's. I think I'd prefer Vintage 30's but its personal preference. Zilla Cabs in Cornwall make custom 2x12's but they aren't that cheap. They have some empty cabs on sale at the mo on eBay for around £180. Just try and grab a really beat up old JCM800/900 Marshall 2x12 as they are UK made, not chinese. EDIT: I did read somewhere that providing the amp head ohmage is lower than the cab you are fine, so a 4 ohm amp into 8 ohm cab might be ok, BUT PLEASE research that first, I don't want to be the cause of blown amps.

It's a transitor head so no problem plugin it into an 8 ohms cab, it'll just be less loud (something like 40% less)

+1, what he said.  Tranny heads just have a minimum impedance - anything higher will just fail to deliver the full rated power.  This is common on most tranny combo amps where the speaker is rated higher than the minimum impeance required to achieve the full power rating.

the Framus 2x12 with V30s will be perfect with the Valvestate (moreso than any cab with GasT-75s imo as they have less midrange).

update: the head is here!!!! picked it up just now. the seller was this awesome rocker dude with long hair, and he had an 80s Marshall of some sort.... looked like a JMP to me. also, he lives above a guitar shop.... rock on!
he is in a band called Morph, http://www.morphrock.co.uk.

now for the amp itself..... it sounded great in his house! can't wait to whck it up with my razorback
it looks very good, only one knob missing, the gold panel is slightly worn which looks cool    and the tolex is also worn.... awesome!
it has some neat little features like 2 modes per channel, and the effects loop is on the front for convenience, and has a mix knob and a loop level cut switch.
BUT
the best feature about this head, besides the valve in the preamp, is that THE GAIN KNOB GOES TO 20!!!!! thats 9 louder

as i said, i can't wait to hear it, but i will need to figure out how to use my combo as a cab first.....

I dunno how you would blow an amp using the Output socket :P

You could blow the speaker if the impedence of the amp is above that of the speaker.

One thing I'd say is don't be dissapointed if the amp sounds cr@p, those MG speakers are pretty rubbish, plus being open-backed it won't have a killer bass-response either.  Until you get a decent cab and speakers you won't find out how it truly sounds. Again my recommendation is something with V30's. Thomann.de do that Framus 2x12 for £200 or they also do a Harley Benton with V30's for about £130, and its apparently made of 16mm ply so its already better than current Marshall cabs! Either that or you can pick up V30's from Award Session at the mo for £44 each which is an amazing deal. Maybe you could pick up a decent unloaded cab off ebay?

ok. i thought that it wouldn't sound that good, and your right, the bass response sucks  :D
I'm seriously considering the Framus, but an unloaded cab would be a great idea. if there were any. i've looked, but can only find ONE 4x12 empty cab. can you find any?
