which is better?
is the standard worth the extra £500?
what music styles are each better for?
which looks better?

I'd go for a standard to be safe. (The 2004 limited edition Pacific Reef one to be precise ;))

The BFG looks pretty cool really. I like matte finished guitars, and the neck P90 looks cool. It's got the most powerful of the Burstbuckers in the bridge, so it'll do anything from hot blues to all but the most extreme metal. The only real downside is it's got a 50s neck. I have heard that some of the routing edges are a little untidy, but that's part of the vibe.
At the end of the day, they're made in the same factory by the same people, so you'd expect build quality to be comparable.

cant say i like many gibbo's either. But hey If your into them... Then I'd probably go the standard.

I bought an S-100 (Guilds equivelent to the SG) and if I had the choice between a Guild Bluesbird and a Gibson Les paul I would go with the Guild. If you need a Gibson I would go for one made at least 10 years ago.

If you have your heart set on it, buy it used. Otherwise, just get something cheaper, its amazing how little the quality varies between the 800-2000$ price range hahahahha.

personally, i'd go for a 70's walnut SG... they can be had for like 800$ US... not sure what that translates into quid though...

Post by: shaman on April 03, 2007, 12:56:13 AM: hmmm.I own /have owned bunches of gibs-must say..very pleased with quality AND RESALE!!Pauls...V's...Sg's...acoustics...I do live very close to factory AND I believe dealers close to me get the good stuff-have bought a standard off of ebay which is killer-but I am a lefty,too..I believe the quality is better with lefty axes..not as many,you know..or we are easily satisfied,seeing how you righties can simply walk into any shop and pull one off the wall(the horror..the horror...)

And I like its fresher, more radical look a lot. LesPauls are nice... but they always remind me of a nice expensive piece of furniture you have standing around in your house as a status symbol.

if you you want a gibson that sounds just good you have to give more and more money for a good sound

i have a tokai ls-180 guitar
specs:
1.top ( one piece maple )
2.back ( one piece mahogany )
3.fretboard( ebony )
4.long tennon
5.pickups (bareknuckle - ABRAXAS )
6.stp stop tail piece = aluminium.

Excellent quality and sounding instrument.
