What do you guys think, single ended full tube combo with power soak and other great features at 299 EUR, this is agressive pricing, good for us
but will it be any good? What do you know/think about it? Anyone heard it yet?

based on the Valve King I tried, it will probably sound quite decent. the weak point in budget combos is always the speakers - I'd figure in replacing the speaker with a G12H-30 or V30.
-
if it sounds anything like the windsor head, it'll be great for the price. as heavier says, speaker (and possibly cab construction) will probably be the weak link... should they bring out a head version (like a valve junior head type thing), that'd be even more awesome EDIT: specially if they throw £50 off!
I'm dying to try one, that's for sure. far as I know, it can take most octal power tubes too, so that could be cool as well.

Just curious: What do you need another amp for?
-
lol dont think he said anything about buying one if im not mistaken

Back on subject - i like the look of the amp - a bit like a THD Univalve
I have wanted a single ended amp myself for a while- especially to be able to swap out power valve and hear the differences between them
-
Power soak, able to swap tubes easily.
At the price it would have to be a really bad amp to be a lemon
Plus class A amps are the way god intended amps to be

aye, i went with a valve junior for the single-ended thing, but no ability to swap tube types there unfortunately (at least without some pretty major mods). far as I'm concerned, the ability to switch power tube types almost makes the windsor combo worth it (as long as it doesn't sound like cr@p), if it sounds anything like the windsor head at all, that's a bonus. (EDIT: also, being single-ended means you won't have to faff about with biasing and the like which is handy)
I liked the thd flexi more than the bivalve (don't think i've been able to try the univalve), for some reason, i liked it for the ability to tube swap too. But this is a load cheaper (like a grand cheaper!)...
My only concern is, if it's anything like the windsor head, maybe it's a little too high gain to get the full value of tube swapping when it comes to tone (i.e. most of the tone and gain are designed to come from the pre-amp)? and the cleans on the windsor head were pretty rubbish (not that that really matters, but it kind of means you can't judge how cleans sound with loads of different power tubes...)
but i remember when it was released in the states, it was like $400, i remember thinking, "that's great, but I bet it's going to be closer to £400 over here... :(". Now that it's not, that is an extremely intriguing prospect.
what are the odds they don't turn up in northern ireland for about 5 years?

Try Bairds on York Street as they have been very loyal Peavey dealers since the 70s
Oh yeah I noticed this in the Peavey site specs which I didn't previously notice
Transformer balanced XLR Recording Output w/passive mic simulator
XLR Ground Lift switch
-
^ yeah, i noticed they had a windsor head in last time I was there... that'll be my first port of call, failing that music maker in dublin normally has some peavey stuff, I might check that out next time I'm down there too.
cool it has the recording stuff, doesn't really worry me either way, i guess you might as well have it... as long as they haven't cut corners on the actual amp to be able to include those features in the price...
:drink:

Thats always the worry, I see that they also included the boost switch too.
Almost looks like they have been wathing what Matamp are doing ;)
-
^ aye. i have to get to try some matamps somewhere... as it is living in this god-forsaken place it'd cost me more to get to try a matamp than to actually take a chance and just buy one.

I'm buying one of these this WE, I'll report back when I'll get it. I already planned some mods : Change the horrible peavey speaker by a lighter and better Celestion Century Vintage , some low gain 12ax7/ay7 to make it as clean as possible, and certainly a 6550EH power tube :)

how about this bundle

Nice EUR price, think iron maiden
-
The head is too powerfull, no power soak, too heavy, too big and is class AB. I think the combo isn't going to sound anything like the head, smaller, lighter (even lighter with a change of speaker), far more diverse in the sound departement by just changing the output tube.
All in all, the head does nothing for me, the combo is just what I was waiting for in a LONG time :)

Feature wise agree! I can't wait to hear your clips to see whether it keeps up the standard in the sound department, but I am quite confident it will.

Video of the combo.
Anyone heard about Kranks new 20w all tube Microstack? Cant find any videos or clips of it but it sounds intresting.

Haha, that sounds pretty damn bad I'd say :(

http://www.guitars.co.uk/acatalog/Peavey_Windsor_Studio.html £189

^ if that comes down much more, to me anyway, it'd nearly be worth chancing even if i don't get to try it. based on the fact that i liked the head (and i realise on paper they're quite a bit different).
-
Gear wire could make anything sound bad... i don't trust their video's anymore after their peavey valve king one.

the guy does make a fair amount of sloppy mistakes when he's playing. Hopefully more will appear soon!
-
I ordered one with an EH LPB-1 (OD/Boost) and an XLR cable to record it  A Celestion Century Vintage is also on the way, as it'll be lighter with it and hopefully sounds even better :D
I should have it by the end of the week.
-
^ah, cool, be sure to let us know what it's like!

Has the amp arrived yet? What's it sound like? Review and/or Clips?
-
Looks a great amp for a great price.
-
^ ^ i heard that the release date was put back until september, but that's hearsay (from someone on another forum who emailed peavey to ask).
-
The store lied to me 2 times about the delivry date (you know like :" We'll have them on monday, no problem", on monday nothing, "We'll have those in 2 weeks, no problem" and so on...) so I canceled my order. The last rumour I eard about was they're to be released mid-jun so we'll see :)
-
^ i emailed peavey's european site a few days ago, apparently it won't be out in europe till the third quarter of the year.
-
Damn :?
-
did i say third quarter? I meant final quarter.
double damn.

I prefer No Quarter
-
the heads are in stores tried one the other week
-
^ yeah, they've been out for ages. The combo is a whole different kettle of fish though, the ability to change output tubes, etc. I'd like to try one, at least.
^ ^
-
anyone got one yet?
-
Still nothing in store, this thing is a freakin year late
-
Heard reports that they are pretty cr@ppy. Someone was saying the clean tone is almost non-existent and well worth avoiding...
-
Probably they will have a really cr@ppy speaker and the cheapest tubes available, but i cant imagine a simple tube amp like this can be really bad apart from that.
-

I'd heard this as well.
To get a clean tone you need to reverse the preamp and master settings and even then it doesn't give a true clean sound but tends to break very easily.
My search for a small tube amp for recording in the house continues ...
