OK, I'm getting payed at the end of this month and plan to get another pickup to go with my bridge position Mule in my LP. I was just gonna get another Mule but I was wondering how my current mule will sound in the neck position, paired with something a bit more powerful in the bridge? This is probably a horrible idea.. your thoughts?
Sometime in also looking to replace all the pickups in my strat copy, need recommendations for that aswell! I will use that strat for pretty much only clean/slightly breaking up tunes as I just dont like singlecoils for anything heavier/more overdriven than led zep..
-
For the Strat the 'Apache' is the way to go in my opinion. All the classic Strat tones plus dirt aplenty when you need it.
-
hmm they seem pretty low output, I was looking for something about the same as my Mule which is 9.4k i think.. Something around that, maybe more seeing as singlecoils are generally a "smaller" sound, so maybe I'd need more output for it to sound full? Im looking for that classic hendrix little wing/all along the watchtower kinda thing..I need the bridge pup to be a bit "stronger" than a normal single because I generally find strat bridge pups to be too thin and harsh.. to be honest though I dont know if its even worth spending all the cash on BKP's for this strat seeing as I hardly ever play it, or clean songs for that matter, but the stock pups suck!

To go with your Mule I would get a standard mule neck pickup.
As for the strat I would go for a set of Irish tours, their wound with the same wire as the mules and are medium out put, so you will get a nice clean tone and a nice overdriven tone too.
-
ahh cool I think I'l just get another Mule for the LP then! Are the Irish Tours based on SRV's tone, I heard they are? Sounds pretty cool to me :) So what exactly do the BKP wired pickguards include? Cheers!

Rory Gallagher, actually. Incredible single coil pickup, tho!!!
-
oh right, I've never even heard of him  will the Irish Tours give me hendrixy cleans? cheers
-
I have an Emerald bridge with a Mule neck. The Emerald has a ton of harmonics, but matches the Mule nicely together and gives a good tone variation.
I also have the Irish Tours in a strat and you can get nearly any strat sound you want out of them. Hendrix, SRV, Rory, Richie Blackmore and even Dave Gilmour 8)
You end up using the voulmes and tones a bit more because they work a lot better with the Irish Tours.

oh right, I've never even heard of him :lol:s
Go forth and check out the Rory Gallagher Irish Tour '74 live album. Smokin' .... (I think there's a DVD, too, no? But I haven't seen it!)

this one (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004WI74/qid=1121102280/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/026-0854145-0645257)
there was a film on channel 4 the other night too, some footage from '74, some from later on. pure class.

Ah I might check him out then! I'l get someone to *cough*download*cough* some for me, my dad doesnt allow downloading software on the computer :)

It might be worth buying a CD- there is a "best of" out at the moment. It was bluesy rock- 1970's. Depends how you are fixed for cash- particularly if you are saving for BKP's !
-
Sorry this seems to be going a bit off topic, but I just remembered I've got a spare RG Irish Tour '74 CD sitting in a drawer at work. It's an older Demon Records release with a silver booklet and slightly different tracklist than the current CD version (I think!), but it's all good! I was going to flog it off eventually when I thought of it, but it might as well just go to a good home.
Mind you, I reckon there's an increased danger you'll want to buy BKP Irish Tour pups after hearing it :)

haha ok cheers, I hope its on its way soon :P How do you think a BRIDGE mule in the neck would sound? I'm guessing cr@p but you never know.. I thought it might sound a bit more "cutting" or soemthin?

A mule bridge would sound quite muddy in the neck position; Its DC is too high for the kind of wire it is wound with to be used in the neck. We usually put a 7 - 7.5K limit on the necks for the lower output pickups (stormy Monday, Mule, Riff raff)
When you get into thinner wire gauges and higher output models, it all changes and DC is not relevant.

hmm scratch that idea then, I guess crawlers will have to wait for a different guitar, whenever I can get my hands on one.. maybe my strat even? I might actually start using it again then but I kinda want that classic strat clean tone aswell... :?
-
Crawlers sound great in Strats, Geoff Whitehorn has one in his HSS strat, it gives it the balls that strats seem to lack, and it cleans up really well too!
-
ooh right sounds like a plan. Which S/C neck and middle would you recommend that go well with a Crawler bridge then? How much will a "custom" scratchplate wiring end up costing me?
cheers!

Geoff had Mothersmilk singles back in November last year when I played said strat at Music Live. They work really well together, especially the splits!

Yep, the mothersmilk singles sound very nice with the crawler.
-
ooh ok! Will the power match up though because they dont seem to be very high output compared to the crawler..
-
Theres no problem with the power issue, each single is a bit weaker than the crawler with a coil spilt so they mach up quite well.
