Title: 2x12 Cabs
Post by: Simon D on April 10, 2007, 10:41:12 PM
Next big guitar-related purchase is going to be a new amp, make and model as yet undetermined, but it will be all valve, with at least 3 channels, and won't need a NASA sized budget. (The Marshall JVM 410H is currently ahead on points.)

However, for several reasons I don't want a 4x12 cab. These reasons are:
1. Cost
2. Weight - Call me a weakling if you like, but I can't be arsed to cart a 4x12 about by myself.
3. Size - Quite aside from anything else, my car isn't big enough to carry a 4x12 plus guitars and amp head, plus me, to rehearsals, jams, gigs etc.

Upshot of all this is, I'm looking at 2x12 cabs, and I'm after recommendations. I've seen the Harley Benton cabs on Thomann.de, but they look a little too cheap to be in it for the long term.

I've seen the Marshall 2x12 cabs, but I was wondering if there are any other manufacturers out there doing good quality, good value cabs.

My budget for the cab is around £350-400, but less would be great.

Any and all suggestions welcome. Cheers for reading,
Si

Framus 2x12.

V30s, never used one - But everyone that's bought one loves them as far as I can see.

don't think you can go far wrong with the Framus V30-loaded cabs - seem well enough built and are a good size too (i.e. good bass response)

Have a look out for the ADA split stack cab
Really handy alternative

I have the framus 2x12 and it sounds great (but I havn't tried much else - just an avatar and a rivera, and the framus is an equal compatitor to them)
+ its relativly lightweight

BUT, you have the budget for a ENGL or Orange cab, which are of the highest build quality and have superior reputation.

anyway, my advice is to stay away from the marshalls. the framus sounds better and is cheaper.

genz benz G-Flex.  Its a 2x12 thats designed to have the bass response of a 4x12 incase you're into that.

note: it weighs in at 62 lbs, which is apparently only 3 pounds lighter than an orange 4x12.

ok....+++ for a THIELE 1x12 cab-it is ported and it sounds as good as any 4x12 I have ever played through-trust me, I didnt believe it until I heard it for myself...I currently run 2 of them-one has an ev 12ml(200 watts) and a c90 -a mark iV boogie head...I am in and out of truck in  no time....no more lugging around the 4x12(oh, it looks better cosmetically...)you can score a thiele on the bay,$$ is according to the speaker..an EV loaded thiele will run considerably more....300 plus usd...if you opt for 1x12, make SURE it is a Thiele-look at speaker location...it will be to the side of cab in order to make room for the port

Philking had some good things to say about earcandy cabs (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7365)
Their Buzzbomb 2x12 (http://www.earcandycabs.com/products.php?req=read&product_id=33) would come in at £320 +p&p taxed, with eminence speakers, or you could stretch to some of the cheaper celestions.

I have one but I never thought of it as a heavy cab, the handles on it make it easy to carry around. I'm surprised the Orange weighs that little.

I second that, Orange cabs are fantastic.

Personally, I have a Marshall 1936 2x12 and I put a pair of VIntage 30's in and it sounds brilliant.

believe it or not, orange cabs are some of the heaviest standard 4x12's.  They weight 20 lbs more than marshall's.  Average 4x12 cab weight hovers around 45-55 lbs.

Yeah - I own an Orange PPC412 and it weighs a ton. I helped a band get their Marshall 1960A cabs into a venue the other day and they felt as light as a feather in comparison.

If the 212 is as a good as the 412, it's definitely worth considering.

^ speakers aren't the only thing that affects the sound. I'm wary of those HB's, because it says on some of them not to use them above a certain sound pressure level. which seems strange.

I had a look at those HB cabs, and came to the conclusion I wouldn't touch one with a fifteen foot barge pole, not least because of that weird sound pressure level thing.

Bloodmountain, personally I'd advise against buying something new and then c--king about with it to make it sound decent (aside from fitting a guitar with BKPs, obviously)

I'm leaning toward an Orange (although I'd prefer a black-covered one) or an Engl cab at the moment, mainly because there is nowhere near me where I can even take a look at the Framus gear.

Wonder if they'll have a stand at the LGS?

tell you what i got... for like £149 from Thomman.de you can get a Harley Benton cab WITH V30's, haha - you can get two V30's from Celestion for about £110 or thereabouts... great deal and it sounds ...o.k...

B-52 AT212 combo. Heavy, but get the wheels. It has three channels and three rectifier settings (Solid state, AB, A).  About $700 new.  I had to really break in the cab before it sounded top notch, when I first bought it the treble was really edgy, but after about 30 hours of high volume play the cab smoothed out a lot.

On solid state, its like a Line 6 metal tone (Like Mnemic's first album). but slightly smoother in the mid range.  On AB, its a really raunchy Marshall or maybe a Mesa Silhouette (sp?). ON Ab, its like a raunchy EVH tone. Turn down the gain till its an overdrive while on A and you get some good crunch tones. The crunch tones are never as good as a real VOX, the amp is definitely geared towards extremes. Lots of gain or lots of sparkly cleanliness.  But I can make some impressive crunch tones with the rectifier on class a and a low-output guitar.
