I've played em all, and am almost done XII. (I have all 6 party members at around lvl 51 right now and I just got to Guervegan) I am an obsessive FF player!!

XII incorporates the best elements of the previous FFs, plus the basic combat system from XI. There is still a transition for boss fights, but encounters with fiends are seemless from gameplay now.

Can't wait for XIII! I got a PS3 last Friday night, and it kicks major ass!

For fans of FF VII (and I'm one of em), FF XII brings back the Espers and a few other elements from VII.

Hurrah, another FF obsessive :)

I reckon XII is prbly the best since VII ... didn't like VI as much as I feel I should have done (loads of people seem to rate that one as the best?). Using the Japanese numbers, 4 is good, and I thought V was very good, has the whole Jobs thing that they resurrected in IX and I maxed out all my guys across the board

If you liked VII, download a SNES emulator and fetch the ROMS off the internet ... its free, and once you get over the 16bit sprite graphics 4,5 and 6 are everybit as good a game as 7, although a bit smaller in scope. Its also amazing to see what Square managed to squeeze out of the SNES given its limited processing power.

Ahhh, the joyously wasted hours.

I liked X / X2, but they took forever to get going properly. Nearly shed a tear with what happens to Auron at the end ... I think its that whole cinematic style of the games that makes them stand out, there's always one character that you end up actually caring about, like in a good film.

The ending of X is one of the watershead moments in rpg ... it's a game, and you care for what happens to em at the end, which is typically Japanese/tragic ... that's a testament to the quality of Square's flagship product and it's the gold standard by which other rpg's will be measured.

The only rpg that's come close is Star Ocean III. Also a Square title, coincidently.

It is the Rolls Royce of game sytems. Not much more I can say about it. Everything looks amazing on it.

A lot!

I admit it, I got it purely out of lust. I'm not usually an early adopter, but the pros so far outweigh the cons when it came to the PS3 that I just had to do it.

Played my mates PS3 on a 42" HD TV last week ... His presents to himself for becoming a father :)
In summary: Frikking amazing ... just mind blowing graphics considering the resolution of the TV it was running on.

Didn't know they were doing an FFXIII ... I thought XII was the end?
If they are doing one - bollocks. Now I will have to buy a PS3.
Hmmm, PS3 or new guitar ... I'm gonna need a payrise!

On XII I just got the second Esper now. TO, Espers are from VI not VII  I like the fact it's not too easy like some of the other recent FFs; so far that giant white chocobo was hard to kill.

I have a (bad?) habit of totally killing the game where I just acquire everything and get the max stats on everyone. I did this on 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10 FF-wise. I must have spent more than 100 hours on X replacing those damn spheres. On VIII I killed Ultimecia at level 6 just to see if I can

Has anyone ever actualy played a FF III? I've never come across it. Not the American III coz that's really VI. And yes the IV I mentioned is the Japanese IV with Cecil, Kain and co. I enjoyed V a lot too simple story but job system is ace and the characters were funny. Good ol times on Super Nintendo. Another good RPG series is Dragon Quest. I've played I, II, III, V, VI and VIII. All excellent games.

III is about to get a release on one of the handhelds soon.

I won't be getting XII. Real-time combat? You can take that and shove it where the sun don't shine. (Over in Slice, If I recall rightly :) ) It works fine in Street Fighter etc, but when you have multiple characters... And yes, I hated Command & Conquer too. I'm kind of partial to being able to think when I need to... :)

I don't much like Fps to be honest. Played Wolfenstein a lot, Doom too... But (shrug) tastes change... As for my favourite in the Final Fantasy series, I'd have to say IV(Easy) because I finished it. (The US version is easier than the untranslated version, apparantly)

Any self-respecting RPG player is going to be anti-FPS. They are anethema to each other.

FFXII is not straight real time combat; nor is it strictly turn based. It's much closer to FFF VIII than any other installment.

FF XIII is going to have straight up real time combat; I'm looking forward to that.

I spend an average of 100-120 hrs on each installment of FF. I just hit the 75 hr mark in XII.

SPOILER WARNING ABOUT FF XII: If you're playing XII and you're about to go into Guruvegan, make sure your main party is at LEAST level 50 and that you have every enhancement and Remedy 1,2, and 3 on the license board, as well as every +HP and +MP on the license board. You should have 3 Mist charges for all your party members. Spells everyone in your party MUST have ready in gambits: Dispel, Haste, Regen, Bubble, Esuna, Slow, Curaga, and Blizzaga.

That's just bollocks imo mate. I'm a self LOVING RPG fan that enjoys both genres.

FPSs are made for quick play and easy enjoyment, RPGs are made for involved story and time/effort correlated development.

Although I do agree that combinations just don't work - And most single player FPSs/Story based FPSs are a bore.

FF games aren't quite RPG games in my eyes anyway, more Adventure with some stats, well - atleast compared to other RPGs. They're quite watered down compared to most RPGs in terms of complexity and freedom.

Although I haven't got to play it yet, I've heard it's alot like the Kotor system.

Yup, XII is a liiiiiitttle bit harder than the previous installments :) Although having played some of the Japanese versions, I'm wondering if they simply didn't make it easier for Americans when they translated it :D

I did my usual grind of tooling up a few levels at the beginning, and it still kicks my arse. You soon realise you can't get by by simply being 5 levels above what the game expects at a perticular stage. Having said that, some of the status spells (sleep / slow / blind &c.) are much more effective in XII than previously which helps a bit ... sleep the boss then frantically heal :)

As for real time I was worried about that too and nearly didn't get XII becasue of it ... but XII isn't real time at all IMO as selecting any action for any character from the action menu pauses everything. Its just that you can assign automatic actions so it can look real time. I actually think the Gambits add a whole new interesting element to the game as you can do some sneaky stuff ... and also screw yourself utterly. FF X2 was kind of similar in a way with the attack chaining stuff.

If you loved the other FFs, you WILL love XII. It is everything you want from an FF, plus some new stuff to get to grips with. The characters, plot, world, side quests, level up system, monsters ... all of it ... its all superbly put together, distinctively FF and you're missing out on a superb game if you snub it because you feel its too different from the previous games in the series.

I hope you arent talking about Morrowind here! Such a great game, even if the combat isnt amazing. I'm yet to play Oblivion because my computer isnt good enough for it

Funnily enough, I've never really got into Final Fantasy, though I havent played one for ages, I didnt like the turn-based combat at all.

Hey, I just finished that dungeon last night. Took ages and I nearly got killed three times by those damn elementals  The cut scene after was awesome it really explained a lot of things. Ben, I still don't have Bubble. Where do you get it?

^ I'll check the strategy guide tonight for locations to buy Bubble and get back to ya! Without Bubble you will not be able to continue much longer.

Also, at this point in the game you should always have 99 Hi Potions. In a boss fight, potions are much faster than healing and won't suck up MP.

The only item I ever use is remedies to cure disease and doom and stuff. Way too skint to spend money on items rather than weapons! Might need to train up a bit because I'm only level 40 at the moment I'll probably get my ass kicked in the next place lol.

40?!

Okay ... purchase 3x Embroidered Tippets. Equip em to your main party and get em up to 50. Then introduce one member of your reserve party at a time and power level them up to around 45. Then you should be okay.

* For everyone else! Spoilers below!!!! *

Sorry for the delay in this post; I've been at a trade show the past 4 days.

Anyway, you should at this point in time at least have Dragon Mail for your main party. One member should be equipped with a Katana, another with a ranged weapon (at least a Yoichi Bow) and another with a melee weapon. I don't bother with shields, they are a waste. Spend the money on helmets with high Magic Resist values instead.

Spells you should absolutely have at this point:

Dispel/Dispelga (Balfonheim Port/Gallerina Marketplace)
Gravity
Esuna
Curaga
Protect
Shell
Reflect
Raise
Slow
Bubble (Rabanastre Muthru Bazaar & Inside Airship)

Your gambits should be set up for all boss fights so that you have one party member bashing away with the other two in a support role. Open EVERY boss fight with at least 2 party members casting Dispel, Haste, Slow, and Bubble. You MUST have 3 Mist Charges for every party member. Buy every available gambit slot for your main party, even the 100+ LP ones. You will need them!

ah so that's where you get bubble from. lol I've never even been to the bazaar. Thanks TO.

I decided I'm too impatient to level up so I dived in into the tower of Phoros. I thought I'd give it a go and if I get slaughtered then I'd level up. Currently level 42 at the start of second ascent just after beating the scary fish-dragon thingy. Let's see how far I'll get lol. I have two nearly identical parties Vaan+Basch are the bashers, Fran+Balthier are the shooters and Ashe+Penelo are healers. Auto-protect and haste works well for me. Cura at >50% health.

My main party is Vaan, Basch, and Fran. Ashe is an excellent frontline fighter due to her speed. Balthier and Penelo are a waste aside from healing gambits.
