Whats everybodies take on the Sovtek Mig's? Has anybody tried one? I'm looking for a little super simple el cheapo amp that i can throw around. Originally i wanted a Laney AOR, but they're near impossible to find in canada, so i'm looking at cheap substitutes.
What i have it in mind for is super gritty hard rock/metal/stoner crunch (think, The Sword)
oh, and for those who've tried them, which in your opinion is best for metal? 50, 60 or 100?
-
I haven't tried or heard Sovtek amps.
The difference between 50, 60 and 100 watts in volume is minimal. More watts will only give you more headroom. I think the 60 watter will be a good compromise.
-
Ummm...
What's headroom?
-
Clearer when louder I allways thought.
-
They're terrible.
-
All of them? That's a sweeping statement TO...
-
It is. Let me ammend:
I've played through 2 or 3 of the Migs and they all sounded like electric cheese graters.

Fair enough!
-
oookay... will this electric cheese grater be suitable with decently high gain stoner riffing? I'm not looking for a hifi amp or a bogner here.
oh and whcih ones did you try, the 50, 60 or 100? I think the 50's and 100's have black faces with fender knobs, and the 60 has a white face with chickenhead knobs.

I saw macrocosmica play once and brenden used the mig 50.
It sounded amazing both clean and distorted.
He was using pedals too though!
Everyone ive spoke to has spoke very highly of them.
They are very rare though!

Sounds good to me, anybody else? hahaha
They're not as rare in north america as they are in the UK for some reason... makes you wonder because you guys are closer to russia than we are.
Anybody tried a mig 60 though? theyre supposed to have different circuitry than the 50's and 100's. I want to know how well they compare to say, a laney AOR or a marshall jcm 800.

I always thought Alaska was in North America, I hope your job dosn't involve any form of geographical knowledge ;)
Dunno about the amps though
-
from what I can remember of reviews of these amps (and the schematics I've seen), the 50w model was a Bassman/JTM45 ripoff while the 60w and 100w heads were hotrodded 2204/2203 affairs.
on a budget they should represent excellent value for money - don't pay more than £300 for any of those amps.
actually, if you're in the States why not pick up a Silverface Bassman head on the cheap - great Stoner head if you bang a Big Muff into it

Don't be silly! It ends in a K! Must be Russian!

yes siberia is close to alaska, but alas, these amps were probably built closer to the industrial areas (moscow) and not the farm/ice fields. So i'll try to stand firm that they're closer to you. =P
Bassmans and bigmuffs arent my thing, im more for gritty distortion than creamy fuzz. Though, there is a guy who lives 30 minutes from me seling a mig 100 for 400$ canadian. thats what... 175 quid? I might have to jump on it.
EDIT: ADDED
The guy sold it off the day before i called him and just didnt take down the listing. Damn it would have been a good catch.
