Title: Stormy Mondays in a Flying V - would they work well?
Post by: Twinfan on April 16, 2007, 08:51:07 AM
OK, I've definitely got the BKP bug

I need to get a set of Stormy Mondays in something.  I've got Mules in a Les Paul and Riff Raffs in an SG so I fancy something different.  I'm after old school blues tone, low gain, tube amps.  I'm thinking unpotted Stormy Mondays in a natural finish Epiphone Korina Flying V - a '58 style copy with gold hardware.  I think this might be a great Albert King style combination.

What do you all reckon???

I think that would sound great.

I have unpotted AII SM's in a 335 and they sound great.  I also have an AIV as the neck pickup with a Riff Raff in a Les Paul, and it is a brilliant combination.

However, I just got the new PG set (which is based on the SM set), and put it in my goldtop, and if you are into old Fleetwood Mac and Gary Moore sounds, then this set nails it perfectly.  The sound with both pickups is almost Fender, it is that good.  If you do get them though, remember that the neck pickup needs to be reversed (screws away from fingerboard), just like Peter Green's.

The "Albert King" vibe, sounds terrific. Alnico IV perhaps.

I've got AIV in my Mules so I fancied AII SMs.  I think it might just work from what you guys are saying.

Phil - I'm not keen on the PG set as it's a pretty specialised tone.  I'd rather keep my options open with a regular SM set I think  ;)

I'll have a (potted) AII Stormy Monday in the neck position of my white Edwards V soon.... if I can ever get round to finishing the "upgrades" I'm doing to the guitar.   :?

I think your Albert Epi sounds a great idea, Dave.  I wouldn't choose an AII bridge to get heavy, but for blues it'll be cool.

Cheers Phil.  I just thought it might work with the Epi's Korina wood.  Might see if Edwards do a nice V first though now you mention it...

I would stick with the AII bridge, even for heavy.  It didn't hurt EVH!

i have a stormy monday in the neck of my '58 epi V...

its very very clear, but (maybe because theres not much wood around the neck pickup in a V?) i think it could need a bit more character.

its personal taste of course, but i have to say i would prefer a mule neck, rather than that SM. the sound needs a little more balls. (anyone want to swap?)

maybe a2 mules would be your thing, theres no doubt the a4 mule bridge i have is 100% perfect in the guitar. or - you could stick the new stormies in the paul, and your old mules in the V.

theres also no doubt my pimped epi '58 V is my favourite guitar (by quite a long way) even considering my gordon smith. the neck is wonderful.

(edit) heres the mule bridge in the '58 V:
