Title: The final search
Post by: Woogie on April 18, 2007, 05:05:34 PM
Right, I am in desperate need of amp help! Open to any suggestions!

I`ll list my specs:

Budget: Nothing outrageous, I`m only 15.
Combo
Effects loop
2x12 (or 1x12 with 2x12 extension)
Able to cover Led Zep and Badlands through to Ozzy.
All tube or hybrid
For use with humbucking strats, Zakk OD, Boss BF-2 (Japan) and Boss GT8.

I was thinking maybe a Marshall but not sure which..

Cheers

if you can wait till it's released, i'd consider checking out the peavey windsor combo. assuming it sounds similar to the head. it might not, it's a little different- but if it's even close, that'd be my first port of call on a budget).

Are you joking?

I have a Laney VC30 2x12 atm, an AVT20 would be a bit of a step down!

Splawn Quick Rod!!

J/K, put your flame throwers away.

How about a Diezel VH-4?

KIDDING!!!

Honestly, how about a JCM800 or 900? Silver Jubilee combo, too.

Didn't mention anything particularly high gain so I'll say Engl Thunder combo.

TO, which JCM800 combo would you recommend??

There is so many different versions. Do they have effects loops?

Cheers

I reckon youre looking at marshall or laney. JCM800, DSL, TSL, laney LCs.

I'd go with an 800, DSL close second (TSLs are a bit more 'metal' and LCs are in the tonal ball park but I never really rated them)

Golden rule: try em out.

I will take a looksie.

Do you know much about Laney VC50 or VC100 because I am pretty sure they are a different amp to the VC30?

Cheers

The only local music shop I have is one that deals in Laney but they only have solid state stuff in.

Wasn't someone on this board selling their 2205 to Mansons?

yeah, that was Sekhmet........ i was interested, but i don't have the money

the VC50 and VC100 amps both are combo forms of the VH100R amp, so they are very different amps to the VC30s etc.

do you live around exeter?

I just checked Mansons, its not on there. About an hour away from exeter.

Do you think that a VC50 would be good?

i'm not too sure about that, because i havent tried the VC50 or the VH100R....

a few people have VH100Rs here, like Lazyninja, Maliciousteve and Joe@fortyseconds, so if they could chip in that would be great, or you could pm them

I thought about a 5150 before.

Isn't it more of a metal amp as opposed to blues/classic rock/hard rock?

well, if eddie was even playing the 5150 on the records (which is a big if, i've heard unconfirmed reports he used soldanos...), his tone got a lot more modern around the time the 5150 was released. i wouldn't get a 5150 for the VH1 or 2 album tones...

I think the VC50 looks good. Hopefully one of the VH100 owners will chime in. Its seems pretty versatile from what I have read and will offer lots of good tones.

Manson's just emailed me about the JCM800, £499.

Seems a bit overpriced to me but hey!

Cheers

See if you can find a Marshall TSL 60 in head or combo form, they're awesome little amps and can be bought used for about £150 - £200 at the moment on Ebay. I had one and it'd do everything from sparkling clean to crushing overdrives, has 3 independant channels and best of all is all tube.

I wasn't sure about new marshalls as alot of people say if you like the sound of old marshalls then you wont like the sound of the newer ones.

Aslong as I can get that vintagey marshall sound!

Will take a look!

Is there a laney gh combo?

I think I`ll go for a JCM800, JCM900 (might be a bit fizzy/shrill) or a VC50.

But opinions would still be great!
