Title: external usb hdd help...
Post by: HTH AMPS on April 20, 2007, 09:42:48 AM
ok, so I'm wanting an external hdd for my laptop so I can dump all my music on it - anyone got advice/recommendations on what to get/what not to get? don't really want to spend much more than £100 unless there are major benefits.

I got one of these the other day, seems good so far, and apparently Seagate drives are meant to be pretty good.

Maplin have been having a lot of special offers on external hard drives recently.  I got a 400GB Seagate a couple of months ago and now they have this 400GB Maxtor for £75:

I've heard Seagate are pretty decent and I've had Maxtor HDDs before (no complaints).

Best I've seen is 500Gb Seagate USB HDD on ebay for £89.00

I'll checkout Maplins when I'm in town today.

LOL. Well, the D2 is what my engineer recommended to back up all the Pro Tools data from our last sessions, and It's worked flawlessly. And I trust his opinion!

yep, they are VERY good (faster than shite off a shovel) but also pricey too.  they're popular in pro recording studios so that tells you they're gonna be pricey right away.

The Maxtor I got works fine for me - can't believe you can buy 400Gb of storage for £89, it's just mental.  I can still remember the days when PC's had dual 5.25" floppy drives and no hdd - one of the floppy drives was to run DOS and the other to run your software.
