WTH?!!
My PS3 has locked up and is not turning on! Grrrrrr
Fortunately, I've only put about 9 hrs into FFXII and still have the original memory card, so all is not lost if they have to swap the unit out.
It's all boxed up and I'm taking it to the shop now. Let's see how good Gamestop & Sony's customer service is for their flagship product.
To be continued ...
-
that sucks dude.
they are supposed to be the games console...
sony must have slipped up really badly during the manufacture if any more break
-
Sony erroneously claim they are the games console...
Fixed that for ya.
PS3 = hideously overpriced and not much better than the 360 which has been out over a year. Most game are ports of the 360 version, and their previous "exclusives" like the GTA series are like rats leaving a sinking ship.
Very disappointing.
Shame about the breakage though Ben, it sucks when new toys break just after buying them. :(

I would be going ballistic if that happened to me!
But i don't agree i think the 360 is not that good compared to PS3, the only thing the 360 has on the PS3 is the price and the fact that it came out first. Graphics are better on the PS3 and obviously the controllers etc.
-
the PS3 controllers look so ugly and uncomfortable
-
They are just normal Playstation controllers...
-
i was thinking of those silver bananas, i didn't think you could get the normal controllers...
I'm a little out of date with console knowledge since i sold my PS2 a year or so ago
-
They are just normal Playstation controllers...
No they're not. There's no rumble, they're hideously flimsy and lightweight and incredibly uncomfortable to use for any period of time. Sony really dropped the ball here, as they actually came out with a controller worse than the PS1 and PS2 controllers.
The 360 controller on the other hand is extremely comfortable over long periods, and is the best controller I've used since the GameCube. Microsoft did good here, as the original Xbox controller was just rubbish.
I ditched my old PC gamepad and use a 360 controller on that too now as they're so good.
Muttley
-
I can't stand Xbox controllers, wtf is wrong with the PS1 and PS2 controllers?? They are the best ones. Also i would rather have a lightweight pad than a heavy one and i have always found Playstation to be the most comfortable.
Though i will agree with you on the Gamecube controller being the best.
-

Sounds like you haven't actually played one. ;)
The GFX are marginally better in the odd spot in a couple of games, but unless you're a complete GFX whore you wouldn't even notice. The rest of the games are direct ports from the 360 and are identical. ;)
The only thing the PS3 has going for it currently is that it's a cheap BlueRay player. And the reason it uses BlueRay is because Sony want to shoe-horn BlueRay in as the defacto standard for HD movies. The entire PS3 debacle seems to be geared towards this, and Sony have forgotten that "it's about the games man!".
Sony have really lost the plot with both this, and to a lesser extent the PSP (They released a 10 minute advert for the PSP in the US, and it didn't even mention games once FFS).
You just have to look at the sales figures to see how badly they've messed up. These are sales figures for Japan (Sony Gaming's strongest and most loyal market) the other week:
Nintendo DS: 133k
Nintendo Wii: 75k
Sony PSP: 24k
Sony PS2: 12k
Sony PS3: 11k
Of course, being Japan, the 360 doesn't even appear on the radar. Japanese gamers don't much like US/European games and hardware (with rare exceptions).
I've a lot of friends who work in the games industry, and almost to a man they are really unimpressed with the PS3.
It also says a lot that Sony just made redundant 54 developers and QA staff (luckily a guy I know who works there managed to keep his job) from the branch that made Motorstorm as part of their management teams current "Oh shite, we really messed up" panic.

US sales figures for March:
# DS: 508k
# PS2: 280k
# Wii: 259k
# X360: 199k
# PSP: 180k
# GBA: 148k
# PS3: 130k

xbox and gamecube controllers ftw! I hate playstation controllers with a passion, they're just horrible.

Muttley, you really seem to know your stuff! almost too much

Orignal XBox controller was rubbish. The Japanese Original XBox controller was alright....ish.
The 360 Controller > Gamecube. (which I was shocked about after the above).
Doesn anyone here have any love at all for the Atari Jaguar controller?
Still, it was good enough for Tempest 2000 (the best game on the console full stop).

That's what comes of being a hardcore gamer since the Vic20 days (25 bleedin' years) and knowing a lot of people in the industry. Hey, I live near Guildford, at one time most of the UK games development companies were based there.

All hail the great nintendo wii!!!
if only they had games to play for it...
-
The only reason it's sucking is because the price is so high, i gurantee if it was the same price as the Xbox it would be doing better.
-

PS3 is cheap in Japan compared to here. About £130 cheaper to be precice. ;)
The trouble for Sony is that if sales don't pick up in the next few months, most of their 3rd party developers who were working on exclusives will start concentrating on the 360 and Wii, because they can't risk the entire future of their business on a console which is tanking to such an extraordinary level.
And if Sony don't have the "must have" exclusives such as GTA (which they've already lost it seems), Ridge Racer (which they've already semi-lost as RR6 on the 360 is actually better than RR7 on the PS3), Gran Turismo (which is rubbish anyway ;)), etc. then they have nothing to draw people to the console with as it just isn't that much better than the 360 to justify the price.
If Blu-Ray takes off, that may save them. But both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray show no signs of taking off any time soon. If HD-DVD were to take the upper hand in the HD film stakes then basically Sony are fscked. They have thrown millions at Blu-Ray to ensure it succeeds (Have no doubts that this is one of the main objective of the PS3. They desperately want all those film companies paying them royalties for every HD film release ;)).
Sony are also making a loss on every single PS3 sold and relying on software sales to make up the difference. Unfortunately that old tactic (which to be fair is what Microsoft are doing too, except they're losing far less money than Sony per console sale) is not working so far.
In Japan the game sales figures up to easter showed a 1.35 attach rate (the amount of games sold per console sold) for PS3 (1,097,000 games sold), which is really bad news for Sony. To compare, the Wii attach rate for the same period was 2.30 (4,516,000 games sold), but Nintendo actually make a profit on every console sold anyway/
I don't have comparitive figures for the US, but I do know that Microsoft announced a 5.7 attach rate for the 360 in the US back in March.
It's also telling that less than a month after launch people can wander into their local Argos (Bristol in this example) to see if any PS3s are in stock and see this kind of thing:
So Sony can't sell their console, Microsoft are ticking along nicely and Nintendo have had to bring another factory online to try and keep up with demand.
Game developers and publishers have to follow the trends in the industry, so if Sony don't attain critical mass with console sales they will stop developing for it, or at best PS3 versions will be an after-thought. Developers need to go where the largest installed user base is to make sure they sell enough to make money. That is exactly what happened to the GameCube. It did't sell enough consoles and the developers largely ignored it after a while. It would have died a lot sooner if Nintendo didn't produce as much first party games as they do.

P.S. Sorry for hijacking your thread Ben. :D

All controllers suck apart from snes and megadrive (genesis) controllers. period.
Does anyone else find themselves constantly disappointed with modern games? I play my gameboy a whole lot more than my psp.
-
No worries, Muttley.
First: Sony wins! New unit is on the way.
Lesson learned - shoulda backed up my saves to a flash memory card ...
Second: The 6Axis controller is almost as good as the dual shock. If you took the cable weight off of a DS, I think they would be the same. I'm not wild about making the L2 and R2 buttons as triggers, but there must be a reason for doing this. Losing vibration means nothing to me as a gamer. A great game doesn't need a gimic like vibration to be compelling.
I've had NO issues in terms of button control with the 6Axis, and I live in the worst area of the WORLD for RF interference!!
Third: Sony is well aware that only early adopters will invest in the PS3. It's hella expensive and there are limited titles at this time. In fact, this scenario is almost exactly what happened with the original PSX, as I'm sure Muttley will attest to, since it's obvious that he knows the genre backwards and forwards. Square left Nintendo for Sony and the rest was history ... I don't doubt the PS3 will be successful in time.
I'm also not suprised that I had an issue with my PS3. That is the price all early adapters must face. I work with the boutique of the boutique in audio gear so it comes as no shock to me when bleeding edge technologies fail.

You liked Nintendonitis?!?!! :o

PSP seems to be inflicted with unsuitable games. A portable games machine really needs games that you can have quick, short goes of really. DS and GBA are great for that. As is the GP32 (the Wonderswan is quite fun as well). :)
Games I've loved recently are Crackdown, Virtua Tennis 3 and Guitar Hero 2 (natch), all on the 360.
My mates game should be coming out in XBLA in a couple of months, and that is looking awesome. :)

I like that controller. But it's still inferior to Sony's. Period! PDT_008

I'm not sure it's the same thing this time around. I think Sony are more in the Sega Saturn position this time around (late to market, overpriced and very few games in the pipeline). And look what happened to Sega after the Saturn! They came out with the fantastic Dreamcast, but it was too little, too late, and the Saturn had damaged them so much they ended up getting out of hardware completely.
The 360 is the new Playstation. ;)

Yeah, new hardware always has its glitches. Mind you the PS2 has been really unreliable throughout it's history. Especially the new slimline version.
Nintendo stuff by comparison seems to be bombproof.

HERETIC!!
-
They came out with the fantastic Dreamcast
The best console ever made imo. Countless classics which nobody played :(
Onto the PS3 vs 360 thing - 360 Graphics are better in some areas, PS3 better in others - Neither have "better" graphics, and most of the noticable things look better on 360 (Dynamic lighting, shaders, etc).
360 has usable (yet costing) internet multiplayer support - Which is doing very well - While PS3's is much weaker.
360 has more exclusives, and now has all the Sony exclusives too - They're selling more so they'll get more game developers and they're not the price of a new guitar.
No comment on the controller - Although the Gamecube controller was the best :>
-
plus you could buy a premium xbox 360 and the HD-DVD drive for (maybe less?) about the same as the base PS3...
i think the PS3 has potential, but it will take a while for us gamers to actually play it, whereas the 360 has been out for some time so developers are getting to grips with it now and can really start pushing it!
This year promises to bring out some fantastic games, for both consoles.
I think Nintendo NAILED it with the Wii... any gamer could justify owning it alongside their 360 or PS3, due to the different games and the innovative controls etc, not to mention the price. Instead of trying to compete, they created a console to compliment and sit alongside the PS3 and 360... genius when you think about it.
i fancy a DS aswell.....
+1 on Dreamcast, it was an awesome console

You all fail at life.
SEGA MEGADRIVE FTW!!!!
I am still a proud owner after all these years with great titles such as Streets of Rage 1 + 2 (3 goes for £50+ on ebay so i'm not buying that!) All Sonics, GoldenAxe, Mortal Kombats, Street Fighter II etc.
Best console ever made.

I've just been playing Streets of Rage 2 on my emulator thanks to this thread :D Its much better on a proper Megadrive on 2 player though, I may have to get one from ebay and bring some mates round for a day of megadrive and beer 8)
-
Combine that with some Megadrive Aladdin!
-
my darn megadrive is broken... i'm annoyed. I have an emulator, but not all the games i had on my megadrive (and I can't be bothered to look for them).
That sucks on a new machine, though, ben, by the way.
-
Haha and The Lion King, NHL, NBA, MJ's Moonwalker, Shinobi, Miraco Machines, Mega Bomberman!!!
And who can forget the legendary triple threat of DESERT, JUNGLE + URBAN STRIKE!!!
-
Am I the only person that hasnt owned a console since the megadrive? (or equivelant)

Nothin' can beat my Texas Instruments Ti99/4A!!!

I really liked the Super Famicom (known as SNES over here isn't it?). Super unreliable games but so many classics.
-
Howcome the good ol' Nintendo 64 hasn't even been mentioned in this thread? It's simply the greatest console ever to be released. I dragged mine out these holidays and got addicted to Mario Kart just like I did when I was 9.
360, PS3, PSP - all cr@p.
The 64 wins anyday! :D

Heh I still have mine. Zelda, Mario cart, Smash Bros etc all great titles. I still don't know what the hell the Nintendo developers were on when they designed the three handled joypads, since when did humans have three hands???
-
Am I the only person that hasnt owned a console since the megadrive? (or equivelant)
me too. i just use my pc for games... i'm more into strategy/rpg type games anyway, which tend to be more readily available, cheaper, and easier to play (you don't need a fancy joypad for something like civilization, lol) on the PC.
EDIT: glad to see it's sorted out, ben, i missed that when i first posted. At least they're standing over their products.
-
I remember the days of loading Miner '49er and Space Invaders onto the PET computer from cassette tape.... truly the glory days of gaming. 8)
-
Heyyyy if we are talking about N64's you can't leave out WORMS ARMAGEDDON!!
-
i had a commodore 16! still here somewhere...
still the most fun i ever had playing computer games. i find the modern games have so much superfluous cr@p to them that all the fun of playing them is gone. also, i felt much happier paying £1.99 for games!
-
Hehe, true about the 3 handled controller, my crosspad thingo hasn't been touched for years.
All of my 64 controllers are still really screwed up from when we rented out Mario Party, and that was only for 3 days! And I got giant blisters on both palms from that swivelling cr@p - did anyone play Mario Party?

I had a Sinclaire ZX81 once. A gun would look like this, >, which would fire bullets like this . and a lazer gun could fire things like this, - and an alien would look like this, A. Cool graphics huh! You had to load the games via a tape player and it would take forever but well worth it with it's advanced graphics!
I play games sometimes on the PC. Are consoles better at games than PC's?

Not really much difference IMO, most games come out across the board nowadays. You getter better strategy games on the PC tho, as you really need the keyboard / mouse.
The downside of a PC is you end up having to upgrade CPU, RAM and graphics cards all the time to keep up with the requirements for the latest games, and that can end up expensive.

I had a C64 also with DataTape, the sound that stuff made I heard again when I used my first modem (the phone physically plugged on a device that listened and made noises and was connected to a computer).
I killed many joysticks doing decathlon and summer games, where it was key to hit buttons or wobble sticks as quickly as possible. There were even some guys using the first cheats: electric tooth brushes on the joystick button to get better high scores.
