Title: new guy- great forum!!
Post by: Miracle Man Matt on April 09, 2005, 07:09:54 PM
Hi Tim,
You migh remember but i bought a double allen head MM off you a while ago (and it sounds awesome, the harmonics just seem to blow everything out the window, and i though EMGs were good!) and i was also enquiring about winding my own PU.  well ive put that on hold for the moment as i want to get more general experience with guitar electronics.  Just want to say what a great idea this forum is, -just ignore me if i get tiresome :)

Im looking at building a Jem now and since im bending towards Vai and satch, then im looking for PUs to reflect that.  Although I love the MM, it doesn't quite have the Mids that i want for this sort of stuff, The evo's which vai uses have quite a high emphasis on the midrrange and then he wacks up the mids on the amp to boot.  Having said that I really like some of the sweetness that satch has, now i know its impossible to get a perfect PU, but what would you reccomend, mainly for stuff like vai and all his fun with harmoics and whammy 8) .

Also Ive had a look at info on the PRS 513 wiring and im looking to incorporate that into the jem, so is it possible for you to wind coils with coil taps?

Thanks alot

MM Mat

Evos are built around a ceramic magnet so it's surprising that you find they've a mid heavy tone, I always think of Vai's tone as quite thin and sterile-alot of his mid comes from his fantastic use of the wah.

If you were to go on spec alone, the Holydiver will be closest, a touch more open than an Evo though. For a lovelly organic mid that'll get you closer to Satch, I'd go for the Nailbomb-plenty of power too.

Let me know how it goes. :)

Lucky I was on the forum at the same time :D  that's all.

An Alnico V Evo would have an overall warmer tone with more bass and not so aggressive highs.

ok, im quite interested in the warpig, what PU sort of artists/other PU would you say its familiar to.  I herd that it was quite versatile when you roll back the tone and vol pots?

Output is comparible to an EMG 81-hotter than your Miracle Man with more mids. Virtually plays itself!
the cleans are good and they sound great run in parallel too.
