is it easy enough for someone who's never been in their guitar before or used a soldering iron?

Simple answer? No. (not if you care about it)

damn. my guitar would look so much better without it, but whatever. i'm assuming a shop would charge a lot for that. i figured while i was already in the guitar to put in a new pickup...

Wouldnt charge a lot based on an hourly rate
maybe $10-20 if you just took the pickup into them

If you don't want to use a soldering iron, you can try cutting the solder with a scapel. It takes a while but you get there eventually.

well i don't think the soldering would be a problem. i heard you could mess up the wax potting or something. i could get help with the soldering.

Aren't the pup covers sealed with silicon or wax in addition the little blip of solder? I may want to swap pup covers if I can without destroying a pup.
(bump)

With BKP, we can just post them off to Tim and he does it for free I think?
Same with adding covers, but he charges the price of the cover.
