Title: General Tips on Pickup Height *REQUEST*
Post by: Rainmaker on July 13, 2005, 05:36:14 PM
Hey tone-mages...

Got a question. I've got a SD Cool Rails in the neck of my Pac and I'm hard pressed to get a good tone out of it (or its 'best potential tone')... have you guys got any general tips on how to set pickup height... or at least how to practically test it?

Thanks a heap.

The easy way is to raise the pickup close to the strings and then lowering it untill the overtones on the higher frets are gone. Every pickup has it's own sweet spot, it pays to experiment. I sometimes keep changing the pickup height for weeks untill I find that sweet spot. Continously testing, balancing, is this right clean?, is this right dirty?, does this work with the band? etc.

Worst thing about my guitar is that I can't raise or lower them, but I got them fine now. I had to get Tim to even cut the screws and make a smaller baseplate. First time I got a pickup from Tim, I didn't mention about the screws, so I ended up having to drill holes for the screws to sit in

what are these overtones? I think I might get these but I'm not too sure what they sound like really?

i think its when you hit a note on a string, then hammer on, and the 1st note seems to linger on as noise and the 2 notes bleed together?

although i could be wrong!

hmm thats not what I'm getting.. When I bend a note on the higher frets you can kinda hear another note underneath it.. hope thats not something wrong with my guitar!

That means you have to lower your pickup.
