I'm sorry but this question has to be asked
-
Yes they suck balls.
-
they're no worse than any of the other bands knocking around at the minute, but the british press do get utterly hysterical about some bands, raving about them like it's the second coming of christ or something. and then, of course, ripping into them as soon as they've decided they aren't the in thing anymore.
utterly hyped, yes, but hardly their fault. without all the hype they'd just be an okay indie type band, with it they're annoying. it's all a bit depressing, i'm going to have to go for a lie down now...
-
I would have been less critical of them this time last year, but after a nother serving of 'more of the same'
I have had enough listening to reheated 2nd rate late 70s post punk, with no humour.
I can even tolerate Fall Out Boy (as even looking at their song titles show theyre more interesting than the usual whingers)
Rob...

I actually like the Arctic Monkeys, can't say they sound like anyone else I've ever heard - lyrics and vocal style are quite different to most other bands too.
They remind me of Television at times, so they're in good company there.

They're awful.
And they remind me of EVERY other indie band at the moment.
Their songs annoy the hell out of me, and they're all identical - thus they all identically annoy the hell out of me.
-
I wish they remined me of Television then I wouldn't feel the need to complain about them
-
lmao, am I sensing a lack of love for the Arctic Monkeys?
give 'em a break, they're still young 'uns - plenty time yet.
-
OK they are massively overhyped ... I mean in the top 10 greatest bands of all time in NME last year??? come on ...
But I do like them all the same :D Its not their fault their label has gone OTT on the media coverage. And songs all the same ... I'm a DC fan :P
-
hate them. hate indie. that's not to say i'm narrow minded: i like/can tolerate most genres, but not indie and pop.
-
I quite like a few of their songs. Good guitar tone, and I find it more interesting to listen to than most other cr@p you hear on the radio. They dont really sound like other indie bands, at least I dont think so anyway.
-
this thread rules. now i just have to decide which option to vote for... i suspect "worse than that"...
-
OK they are massively overhyped ... I mean in the top 10 greatest bands of all time in NME last year??? come on ...
Yeah, but you expect that with NME - the indie music genre and it's associated press is the biggest self important / self gratifying there is, they act like proper rock music doesn't exist, and that U2, The Smiths and Love Division were the only bands going in the 80's. All it takes to be talented as a guitarist in their eyes is the ability to play stacatto guitar riffs with fizzy distortion on a telecaster. Eventually the negative aspects of the music genre will completely overshadow the positive ones, and the fans will slowly desert it.
-
shiteE i clicked "yes" before i even read the other option >.<
I've had enough of all this shitee on the radio; i dread work on a saturday not because i have to work, but because i have to listen to bloody radio 1.
I've heard jonathan woss call the kaiser chiefs the best band of all time. Wen i see him i'll kick his arse/
-
shiteE i clicked "yes" before i even read the other option >.<
Pretty much sums up how much they suck :P
-
well they dont play widdly widdly or de tuned thrash muck that hasn't gone anywhere for 20 years, so I like them better than a lot of stuff discussed on this site
-
LOL eliot that was bold

How much Indy do you listen to?
To an outsider (i.e. me) all thrash metal sounds the same, but you can probably tell the difference between bands by their distinctive chugging.
I agree they are overhyped, I seem to recall NME calling them "the saviours of independent music". But they are still one of the better post-libertines bands that are doing the rounds now.

I listen to quite a few, cept what I listen to they all do sound different, and none of them sound like the cr@p that is Arctic Monkeys.
I'll list some bands:
Ciccone, Art Brut, Ludes, Gogol Bordello, The Long Blondes, Brakes etc.
-
Anyone else see artic monkeys crammed into the carling tent at reading two years ago?? Thats was a pretty amazing gig
I went to a few of there gigs after that but now i am bored. First couple of gigs were great with loads of energy the last one i went to was just really dull and full of arses
-
They certainly don't deserve all the hype that they seem to get, but hey, I've heard worse. Personally, they don't do anything for me, but I hate Wolfmother way more :)
The Arctic Monkeys aren't even that hyped at all in Australia anyway...
-

While possibly marking myself as a hypocrite, I agree (for the most part) with the above, however I have the advantage of being able to ignore posts (& bands) that I am not interested in.
However when it gets to the stage that Radio 4 and BBC News 24 informing me every 10 minutes that they are beating the Beatles sales figures and are the savours of UK music I have to react.
So while the little northern chaps are considerably better than the Libertines (but then again it's hard to find somebody who isn't), I am already sick and tired of the 2nd album.
It wasn't even as bad as this during the New Romantic or Madchester phases.
Rob...
It actually breaks a long held belief that I should not critisise music (cept for so called Urban and Dance) simply because I don't happen to like the music.
-
Don't mind that dancefloor song in a club coz the girls go wild lol Their first album was shitee imo but everyone else was saying its amazing. Second album same thing again. They thought I was insane for missing Arctic Monkeys to go see Coheed and Cambria at Leeds Fest last year lol. (By the way how cr@p is Carlng fest these days?? not gonna go this year)
-
No, they're worse than that - they are without a doubt THE worst "band" on the face of the planet.

I guess you've never heard of these guys then http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDz1lInD3Us

I hardly ever listen to top 40 music and that includes the occaisional guitar band that's in it. I can't be bothered by that commercial stuff.
The Fratellis seem kinda cool, though.
-
Don't really mind them that much. They're more bovril than marmite.
More sucessful than I am, so who the hell am I to argue...........Good job I'm better looking than the northern little monkies, otherwise I would be upset.
-
I must state that I have never heard the Arctic Monkeys (maybe - are they the kiddies who play strats), nor have I heard widdly stuff since I saw Yngwie in the late 1980s nor Thrash since I saw Metallica on the Damage Incorporated tour. So everything I wrote above came from the fact that a 15 year old NME reading nerd suddenly jumped out of my skin and manipulated my fingers to type stuff.

Ha ha, yeah man, I keep trying to get my inner child to shut the hell up. Little bugger keeps getting me in trouble

that's because music hit a high point in 1989, and it's been downhill ever since...

Yes - a knife is not the best way to commit Hari Kari, I find a katana is swifter and less painful
-
If you're going down the seppuku route, the real trick is to make sure you have a competent kaishkunin :) that way its almost painless ...
-
can't say they sound like anyone else I've ever heard - lyrics and vocal style are quite different to most other bands too.
+1
they nail the same kinda indie VIBE as everyone else...
but to me they sound substantially different... their own little niche...
used to like 'em a little bit some years ago, before the first album was released, before everyone knew about them....
not bad.... not amazing...
there are FAR worse bands... so really don't understand the whole "worst band on the planet" thing... at least they know how to write a well-structured and melodic song which is more than can be said for a lot of others.
-
heh,
If I had desires to head on the worst band in the world direction, it wouldn't have been the Arctic Monkeys, and I would not have been so gentle as to say "are they terrible"
Rob...
-
Personally, I think the urge to call the Arctic Monkeys 'cr@p' is the subconscious trying to balance out all the hype, and I'm feeling that way too at the moment - I didn't even notice the hype until I read some magazine saying that the guy from AM is "the best songwriter in 20 years" and calling them "genius" and everything, which made my respect for the magazine AND the band go dowwwwwwn.
They were clearly destined to be some little indie band which nobody knew or cared about, and all the fame and hype has killed them.
RIP, Arctic Monkeys.
-
well said
*applauds*
-
Haha, do you applaud regularly at funerals? :D

hahhahaha
-
how has the fame and hype killed them?
last time i checked they were doing reasonably well for themselves i think... what with their two successful albums on a major label, and a global sell-out tour. :?
the fact that most people here dont like any popular music at all, makes it no surprise that most arent fans of the arctic monkeys.
obviously none of you lot are gonna like them if your a metal fan... (there are exceptions im sure).
basically what im trying to say is... you guys saying
"arctic monkeys are shitee!"
gives the impression that you actually like some indie, and that its this band in particular that stand out as bad. if you see what i mean.
which isnt the case at all is it? most of you think pop/indie in general is shitee...
so i just dont see why half the people here are commenting about how bad the arctic monkeys are, when someone could give you a list of all succesful indie/pop bands and youd regard each and every one as bollocks as well...
catch my drift?
-
Wooohhhh Sam,
there are bands that are (considerably) worse than the Artic Monkeys.
Anybody who has wandered through the late 70s & early 80s so called 'new wave / post punk' back catalogue will have heard it all before, but done much better and considerably more conviction.
Same as anbody who has listened to the Beatles and Mott the Hoople (amongst others) will have already heard 90% of what Oasis has or will ever produce.
Personally the best I can say for them is that they are a no more than average band, that have been known to put on an energetic live show.
To me they are pretty terrible (and very derivitive), but then I would also class U2, Oasis and many other popular (many of which are mentioned on this site) bands into that catagory.
Given the lack of any decent music media these days (theyre all owned & run by the same small group of people) why should I expect anything better.
The reason I don't bitch about the bands mentioned here is because I am not having them pushed down my throat, evert time I turn on the TV or radio (even radio bloody 4 straight after the Archers), every newspaper & magazine that is remotely conencted with music) and even fecking shops.
In their case I am completely happy becasue I don't hear them very often and I don't have to look at their ugly faces 20 times a day, and their songs 40 times a day.
For other people and their intense dislike of the Arctic Monkeys them I will put that down to the exuberence of youth, the same way as I excuse their loyality to downtuned guitars and cookie monster vocals.

I read some magazine saying that the guy from AM is "the best songwriter in 20 years" and calling them "genius" and everything
I thought that was supposed to be Pete Doherty. Allegedly. :?
But that's another topic all on its own, I suspect.

I totally agree, Rob, and the popularity of bands like Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine is a complete and utter mystery to me for much the same reasons.
But you and I are old. I guess every generation needs its own new heroes.

The fact that current indie bands suck is totally unrelated to the question of whether Indie is good or not.
Indie can be great - But all the current popular indie bands suck.
Honestly even Kurt Cobain writes better songs than that guy...
-
What exactly is "indie"? The term seems to be used for any band that uses guitars, bass & drums and isn't obviously pop or metal.
There are those dreary bands who sound like Coldplay impersonators (Athlete, Snow Patrol) but then there's loads of other stuff like Bloc Party, Editors, The Bravery, The Automatic, Hard-Fi, The Killers, The View, Kasabian and of course the popular Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs and Arctic Monkeys. It's a pretty broad range of stuff.
But I take Sambo's point - I don't particularly like any of these bands (from what I've heard) so I'd hesitate to pick any of them out as better or worse than the others.
-

thats what i was getting at- thanks for saying it better than i could have Philly :D
in terms of 'what is indie'... by todays classification, i would say pretty much all the bands you named would be described as indie to at least some degree.
razorlight is another one i'd pick out.
although stuff like Kasabian... people seem to class as like... indie/indie-'rock'...
i hate it when all these 'TV-bands' are described as Rock.... it really confuses me.... ive seen ads proclaiming that even franz ferdinand for example, are Rock... which is verging on ludicrous.[/i]

well, seeing as a genre is pretty much defined by its contemporary flagship acts, then i would say it is completely related.
but anyway- name some indie that you personally think is great...
it'd be interesting to see your tastes actually, same as anyone else who i've kinda assumed hates indie in general.
-
I dont like most "indie" but theres the occasional few songs that I like. I've pretty much completely gone off metal, so its not just metalheads who dislike it :P
-
i'm not one for genres myself, whether it's Marilyn Manson, Skid Row, Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie or Bjork, to me it's all rock. just different flavours. pop is just what's popular, be it good or bad, so if Marduk had a top 40 hit that'd be pop! :P and i refuse to see "indie" as meaning anything other than "on an independent label". you do need to use various terms and comparisons to give other people an idea of what something sounds like, but all these genres and sub-genres are ludicrous. and why have seperate charts for them? who decides what fits into one genre or another, and where do you draw the line?
and when did R N' B start meaning soppy drivel?

i remember a whole thread when i went on about almost exactly the same principal.
naturally- no one listened.
-
back to the topic i think the monkeys rock!! not the greatest guitaring in the world but they got some catchy tunes :D
-
Can't stand indie. It got too generic far too quickly. Every other band was trying to be indie and write boring pub songs now it just sounds the same as the last popular song.
While I do listen to metal, I do listen to other things like Jazz, Country, Blues, Film music (Alan silvestri and Danny Elfman are amoung my favourites) and even some world music. So I'm not being narrow minded and thinking metal is the be all and end all. I like variation in my music but I just think indie is far beyound cr@p.
But I wouldn't insult any one who listened to it.
-
Not sure if there cr@p, come on, they must be doing something right, why are they selling so many records? I'm not saying I love them, but I certanly don't hate them! I think they are good at what they do, and they deliver the goods when they need to. Music is only a business as far as record companies are concernd, you are a product as soon as you sign the dotted line, products have to sell.

$% me there's a lot of hate here. I think they are over hyped, but they can sure write hits. I like all guitar music so I quite like them.
