How high do you guys put your treble and bass side of your neck and bridge pup?
I'm just wondering considering I'm playing around with them right now.
Thanks :)

I've got mine at exactly 2mm all round on both pickups.

How does it sound?
I forgot to mention, if you do say how high your pups are, please explain how they sound too.

I have SMs and Mules. I found that a 2mm gap all round gives more 'edge' and 3mm + gives a sweeter, 'airier' and more vocal sounding response.
I have set both guitars at 2mm for now, but will re-adjust to taste if/when I get to use them regularly again.

Cheers!
Yeah, I have my pups set at 1mm right now...i'll check it out.
Also, all around means the bass and treble part of the pup, verdad?
-
Yep, 2mm bass and treble side.
I found that closer than 2mm gives more bite and compression but makes it "fuzzy". 3mm, as FF says, gives it more air and a more acoustic like tone. 2mm, to me, is the perfect balance of bite and clarity.
I have my Riff Raff'd SG set around 1.5mm all round as that gives a more Angus-like tone. I personally prefer 2mm though.

As far as I know it should be 4/64 of an inch on the treble side and 6/64 on the bass side if you are setting single coils. If you use humbuckers that should change to 6/64 on the treble and 8/64 on the bass.

"Should be" according to who? Ant what pickups? On what guitar?
There's no hard and fast rule as to what YOU should use. It's all in your ears ;)
-
Even string gauge will affect the height that you prefer your pickups at.

A good starting point (which worked perfect for me) is adjust the bridge around 2.5mm on both sides and adjust the neck to 3.5mm on both sides. Then if you want, raise the treble side on both pickups or lower the bass side on both pickups i.e. Bridge: 2.4mm treble side/2.6mm bass side
Neck: 3.4mm treble side/3.6mm bass side

Weird, I have my Mules way lower than everyone here. The neck one is level with the surround, and the bridge is about 3-4mm above the surround. Maybe I should raise them a bit?

It's up to you Tom - whatever you think sounds best!

You may not need to Tom, remember that we are comparing the 2-3 mm gap between top of pole pieces and string fretted at last fret.
Therfore, when I set a 2-3mm gap on my Les Paul, the pickup heights above the plastic mounting ring look about the same as yours, especiallly the neck which is flush to the mounting ring. This may be because of the difference in the heights of pickup rings and neck angle e.t.c on different types of guitars. My S.G. pickups look higher, but not too much higher.

I've just dropped my Mules down to 3mm as I wasn't completely happy with the tone. This has allowed them to "breathe" a bit more and sound a bit more open. Basically, they sound much better now :)
I'd recommend Mules at 3mm neck and bridge, fretted at the last fret, heght from underside of the string to the top of the polepiece.

Having experimented again, I can readily concur with Twinfan. I think this added 'aural space' in which the BKPs can better articulate helps one truly tell the difference in quality between a BKP and A.N.Other pickup.
