Some videos I've made to explain very briefly how to get or use Clapton's Woman Tone and Peter Green's out-of-phase sounds

Please forgive the home-made quality of the vids.... just wanted to share the tone with people.
The amp was a Roland micro cube digital thing ( 80 quid job ) and the guitar sports wonderful BKP ( what else? ) humbuckers.
Any questions and /or comments will be appreciated. Also please rate the vids at youtube.com. Cheers!!

They both sound pretty good to me though I am not a LP player but I hope you take that as a compliment. As a constructive criticism, I would say the explanation of what "out of phase" means might have been helpful-even if it were very very brief. Great post!
-
Cheers!
yes you might be right..... being a diehard Fenderman...what do you think of the out-of-pahse sound compared to the typical Fender quack?
-
thanks a load for those videos - i think that out-of-phase tone might be something that could really appeal to me if i played with it a bit... In my head it'll sound great for on-the-edge arpeggios so i might give it a go some time!
-
I love the out of phase tone-you are right it does appeal for the reason you suggest.
-
Well i normally use my SG for woman tone and what i do is use both pickups in the middle position and drop the bridge pickups tone all the way to ZERO. This is how i like my woman tone 8)
-
Yep, nice vids. Can't say that I liked the Peter Green tone myself - sounded very strange to me for something so un-thick coming from a Les Paul!
Interesting stuff though, and the Woman Tone was great :)
-
Thanks for the vids!
I had my LP set up out-of-phase in the middle position. I liked the clean sound alot and pinch harmonics screamed but I got bored with it within a month. Sometimes, I'll play in the middle position and roll the volume on the neck pup down halfway to get close to a Strat sound.
-
Erm, for the woman tone... didn't Eric play both pickups and then roll off the volume on the neck pickup? It gives the snap of a neck pickup but the added oomph from the neck.
And Peter Green's was only the neck wasn't it? Not both.

About the Woman Tone,
Many people believe he used just the neck p/u. Others reckon it was the middle position. I reckon Clapton did use both ways; just neck and neck + bridge with the tone knob rolled off. I find that just neck using the right cap sounds the most authentic but whatever works for you, really.....
About Peter Green's tone,
I am not sure I know what you mean exactly.
For Peter's out-of-phase sound you need to use both p/us wired out-of-phase. The other alternativ is flipping the magnet in one of the pickups . You can't get the same tone using just the neck pickup.

Aahh right, cheers. I getcha. :)

For the added choice of in/out of phase sounds in the middle toggle position, I installed a double pole / double throw push-pull switch behind my treble tone control. I hear Snowy White did this with his Goldtop.

Thanks for the great demos ! It was great to actually hear someone else demonstrate and play these sounds in isolation from the noise of a band.
Nice one ! :D

BTW, I forgot to mention that th out-of-phase sound is a killer for reproducing Albert King's V tone and also for soul/cropper stuff....
check this out;

You'll see how the tone I was desmonstrating fits perfectly there.

Well check this out. An explanation by the man himself of the woman tone. Towards the middle of the video around 1.53. Enjoy 8)

is there any way to wire up a LP without adding extra swtiches or changing pots and still get the out pf phase sound? I would prefer not having to change out pots or add switches...
Ive never used a push pull top so i dont know how they work so i will ask this (noob question!) Do they still work as the tone knob? say i was to take out the neck pup tone knob, replace it with a push pull one will it still act as a normal tone pot but if pulled up make the pup go out of phase?
Hope Ive made that easy to understand... :?

If your pickups have 4-conductor cable, to put them out of phase all you have to do is reverse the wiring of one of the pickups - e.g. with a BKP swap the red and black wires so black is "hot" and red goes to ground.
If you have 2-conductor braided cable, you'd need to dismantle the pickup and flip the magnet to achieve the same effect.

Yes, just think of the push-pull as if it's two separate components - a pot and a DPDT switch. They're completely independent.

Great Dane.
Thanks a lot!

No problem man. Still waiting for my mule set. Should be in any moment now. Then maybe i can get better woman tone. 8)
-
cheers!
-
I've had Stormy Mondays and PGs and both are terrfic old fashioned humbuckers. Mules are great as well.
-
Well i fell in love with mule when i heard them. But to bad i do not have the money to invest in a tube amp. I am still saving. I am only using a peavey bandit which is decent but not phenomenal. Thinking of getting a laney LC15. But do not know if it tak pedals well.
-
the most incredible thing is that later on i discovered that the speaker was damaged so the tone wasn't as good as it should have been!!
LOL!!!

woman tone = mud
out of phase = horrible
Neither tones i'd ever want to go near, but I understand what musical purpose they serve and the influence they've had through out history im good friends with the lead guitarist of "Green Mac" the Fleetwood Mac tribute band.. So im used to hearing out of phase :P
