I have a Fender Mex strat, but im fed up with the pups.....they don't sound very good. I want to completely rework the innerds of it e.g new pups, volume and tone pots ect.
I kinda have a crazy idea of putting a humbucker in the neck (mule?) with Irish tours in the middle and bridge postions! On of my favourite guitarists Graham Coxon has a frankenstein tele with a similar combo. Would this be a good idea?
Kinda music I am into is Pixies, Stone Roses, Suede, Blur/Coxon, Beatles, Libertines, Blues (BBK, SRV, AK) ect. So I want a set that can give a pretty versatile range of sounds but also a set that retains character and is a bit different. Thanks dudes!

It's your guitar so you can do whatever you want. It will look really weird IMHO.

You can design it on there to see what it would look like.

Hey thanks for that site! I kinda like the way it looks quite quirky. Mainly though I guess a chunky, blusey neck with sratty bridge sounds and stuff. Would it be better to go the other way round?
-
i don't see why not, there are plenty of telecasters with singles at the bridge and humbuckers at the neck.
-
i think that'd be hella cool. make sure you tap that humbucker though.

I was just wondering if you would need a hotter than normal bridge pickup as Strats can be a little weedy compared with Teles.
Other than that it sounds like a reasionable idea to me.
Hmmmm, I's like a nice tele with a mini HB in the neck position
-
Um yes I thought that about the bridge pickup. Would Irish tours be hot enough?
Yea I kinda like the idea of a strat with a custom tele pickup combo style....plus the extra middle! With coil taps i think it would be very versatile.
I think it is worth customizing this my Mex too, I think I was extremely lucky and got a very good one and with the expert setup it got at regent guitars I have a very good instrument. I have played a few other Mex strats, and they have cannot touch the playability. Sounds fun customizing it too!
The only niggle i have with it is that it is always going outta tune. I have check the trem springs, there are 3 on there. Would it be wise to upgrade tuners?

Why not go for a P90? Then you'd have one of each! :D

I have fancied the Jerry Donahue strat for ages.
The one with the modified bridge pickup (I think theres a metal plate under it to get more tele like tones), however I dunno if Duncan have a patent on it or not.
Actually my mates strat has a P90 in the bridge and it sounds great

Ooh there's an idea. Where abouts do P-90's fit in with singles and humbuckers? Do they sound like paticulary hot singles?
