Title: A Bit sad today
Post by: 38thBeatle on May 07, 2007, 10:24:47 PM
My beautiful little Russian Blue cat was killed in the road outside today. She was a lovely little thing-very affectionate and will be missed. Usually when I was typing posts, she would be sitting on my lap.Mrs 38th is upset even more than me.Only a cat I know but I love my animals.

My thoughts go out to you both.
There is no such thing as just a cat or just a dog when it is a beloved pet and member of the family.

I feel for you both

I understand too.  I had my cat for 18 years before he died, but when i changed continents, he came with me (2 times!).  He died 2 years ago, but I still miss him.

Sorry to hear that, Mr Beatle.

I've always felt protective of my pets, and it worries me that something would happen to them, so I can empathize with you.

Hope your family is well.

Sorry to hear about your pet, sadly accidents make the loss feel even harsher.

Despite previous posts, I like cats a lot, and remember what it felt like losing my 12 year old cat.

Thanks for the thoughts guys.I think we all get very attached to our animals. With all the misery and cruelty that goes on in the world, a pet is a small way of atoning for that.

Sorry to hear that Mr38th. I was devastated when my last dog died seven years ago, she was there all my life as she was older than me at the time and we all felt like we lost a member of a family. No embarassment in getting upset Mr38th. I feel for your family.

I too am sad to hear your news. I lost one of my three cats to sadly needed euthanasia about a year and a half ago and I still miss her. I grieved almost uncontrollably for the first few days.

I'm just happy to hear that your little darling was appreciated and you felt the need to share with us.

My thoughts and best wishes are therefore with you and the family at this sad time.

(By the way Twinfan, I knew you were already a man of good taste, but 5 cats ? - that is what I call VERY good taste).

Hoorah for kind and responsible pet owners everywhere !

I feel for you 38th.

I still miss my cat called Berry. He passed away some years ago. He was the sweetest living creature that ever walked the face of this earth.

really sorry to hear that, 38th... we had a cat (kitten) when i was about 13 or 14, and it got knocked over. we only had it for about 3 months, and I was really sad, so I can imagine how you must feel if you've had one for a long time.

condolences...

My condolances to you. Its horrible when a pet dies ... leaves such a hole.
And becasue cats get everywhere in the house, it seems worse. I have two, and one keeps going missing. We always end up in tears ... but so far he's always come back.

Here's to cats anyway, much maligned by those who have never actually owned one!

Thanks again guys, your kind words mean a lot believe me. I have owned 5 cats over the years and obviously have lost them in time usually after they have had a comfortable life with lots of love and plenty of food  but this time it was worse because she was a special little lady and had bags of personality and she was only 6. I remember the good times and I think we both have already decided to get another. We do have another elderly cat that we rescued years ago.We are even thinking of moving to a quieter road. I dunno, there are terrible tragic events somewhere in the world every day -my little tale is trivial in comparison but , Hitler notwithstanding, animal lovers make the world a better place in my opinion. Thanks again.

i'll just add my condolences, we've always had cats around the house, six at the minute, two of whom have been here about ten years.  they do become a part of the family and are sorely missed when they're gone.  and we've had quite a few knocked down, which is horrible.

That sucks man.  My 3 year old cat (Dweezil) got knocked over last year, but she's OK now.  She fractured her pelvis and was fairly smacked up.  The nearly wifey and me were in a terrible mess.

She's back to jumping on me at 3 in the morning now and chasing voles around the house.

Sounds like your cat was very well looked after and had a comfortable little life before the accident.  At least it's better than a lot of moggies get.

I am sorry to hear about your loss Sir, there's no replacement for any pet, each one with their own footprint .  Just last week we lost a beautiful cat, then on sunday the other, nowhere to be found. We are still grieving and shocked.

Thanks gents.Pets bring out the best in people I think and it is gratifying to know that many of you understand and I hope,. Lulusg, that your two turn up. We thanked our  neighbours tonight as they helped me deal with the aftermath which was not pleasant. We are going to be looking at cats needing a home in the next few days and may take on a rescue cat or kitten.

That's a very good and honorable thing to do. Rescued animals are very thankfull creatures. Such a good deed returns itself sevenfold.

Sorry to hear that 38th. I know that feeling too it's horrible. We had a cat knocked down back in the 80's. It came from a farm as a kitten and the mother had given it plenty of hunting lessons so it used to get lots of birds and mice. It used to sit on a garage in between two houses and hook swifts out of mid air and get dragged a few feet from the impact. But in the house it was like butter wouldn't melt. Get another one and you both will feel a lot better!

Best of luck Lulusg-I suppose I can say that I know for sure what happened however unpleasant an you are right, good bunch on this forum. And Johnny, the local birdlife will be happy because Mercedes( that was her name) was an
expert hunter. Mrs 38th and I have been to the rescue centre today and have seen a lovely little female cat.She is on 11 months old and is very timid. My hands are scratched to bits   :) as she was not to keen on sitting on my lap but eventually I had her purring away and relaxed..We have put our names down and have to have a home visit( I have owned cats for 20 odd years so what do I know?). If we get her we will be delighted and then we will build her up and get her confident and maybe later in the year to get another Russian Blue.

My sympathies as well, 38th.  Though some make light of it or think  it's silly, I see more than a few patients every year for grief counseling when pets pass away.  There's little anyone can say to make things better, but in time the good memories will outweigh the bad.  We never really "get over" such losses in our lives, but we do eventually work our way around them and try to continue on.  In January, our beloved Max (a huge Chow/Rottweiler mix) passed away after a sudden onset of seizures.  I tried to save him, even gave him mouth-to-mouth (for which I was roundly ribbed by some of my medical colleagues), but I failed him just when he needed me most.  Anyway, hope things ease up for you in time, 38th, and you've got extra sympathy on this end!

Thats very kind of you thank you.I feel for your loss of Max.We are trying to "get back on the horse" so to speak by getting a little lost soul who needs a home and with luck, will be able to bring "Millie" home in a few days. She is a beautiful little 11 month old cat  with big saucer like eyes that needs a home. She is scared of everything but we will bring her out of her shell.I have to "cat proof" the garden so that she doesn't get near the road. We are both volunteering to become "cat cuddlers" for a cat charity to socialise distressed or abandoned cats.We see that as a good way of honouring the memory of Mercedes. WE both love all animals and hope to be able to get a dog but as we both work full time at the moment, don't think it would be fair. Thanks again for the kind words and I am coming to terms with the loss of my little lady.

my condolences. My cat died on the same day as the tsunami, and that kind of put things into perspective for me. I was still bloody miserable though.

good luck with your new cat 38th, With a bit of luck it will make as good a companion as your old one.

Oh, and I agree with this:

I cant understand people who are cruel to animals, it just doesnt make sense.. this sounds a bit sad and anti-social, but a lot of the time I actually prefer pets to people (well, dogs at least, I've never met a cat that liked me  ).

She has been a naughty girl by hiding in the last day or so but we coaxed her out and she is enjoying all the attention. She is a tiny little thing and finds her way into all kinds of nooks and crannies. I have just about been able to bring myself to look at pictures of dear little Mercedes (she is the little Russian Blue that we lost) but here is a pic of her.

I had a white persian with blue eyes that wasn't deaf luckily. Most of them with that combo are.

I lost my retriever to cancer, my mountain dog died of a twisted stomach and I think my 2 parrots and cat are still alive haha.

Pets are the best. I`ve seen some sick videos of animal cruelty like one of a puppy being stabbed by a sick woman wearing stilletos :(.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

I am glad you have it working for you Mr. 38th. That's a beautiful cat. We almost adopted one this last weekend from the humane society but decided to stick with the dogs (2). I thought coyotes had taking our two cats, maybe a snake(we lost one to a mocasin two years ago), ratlesnakes are common. Then a call from a neighborhood yesterday told of another predator we were suspicious about but could not confirm, a Bobcat. It has been seen around right before a cat disappeared. This is a rapid change on our enviroment. Take care!

Thanks again guys-blimey those predators are heavy duty-at least here that is not an issue-just cars! The not knowing must be awful-however sad we were, we did at least know what had happened and that she'd have known nothing about it. Millie, meanwhile, is very shy still but getting more confident by the day. Those eyes are something to behold!

Millie update: she is really coming out of her shell and is exploring the house and has an incredibly loud purr. She is still a bit nervous and we have to move carefully but she is way different from that scared little cat we took on. In fact we got so much pleasure from her that we have now rescued another little female cat that we have called Loretta. She, too, is pretty timid but is gaining in confidence daily-so far they get on ok too.
