Post by: realguitarshredder on May 13, 2007, 10:01:24 AM
bought my first BKP pickup. An alnico nailbomb bridge.. well, I am not all impressed with it though cause its not so bright at all..I mean the neck and the bridge almost sounds the same whereas I wanted a more twangy kind of sound on the topend.. so maybe I should change to something else..but heres a sample.let me know wht u think

That might be the perfect fix for him I'd say!

Maybe a late reaction but....
how can that be?

I have a nailbomb set in a mahogany body / maple set neck guitar, and a nailbomb in the bridge position of an alder body / bolt on maple neck guitar, and I have enough highs in both guitars.

With the nailbomb set, the neck humbucker is much more warm (almost jazzy) than the bridge humbucker.....so maybe there is something wrong?

He may not have wired it wrong... the pickup may not respond as well in the guitar he has it in.

Or he could have it a fair distance away from the strings.....

I found with BKs i have to have them alot closer to the strings that i have ever done with any other pickup in order to get the best sound from them.

just try playing about with the heights and see if you like it better.

Have Nailbombs on my mahogany bodied maple necked RGT and there's plenty of highs but if you're used to ceramic magnet humbuckers the nailbombs do sound dark and more organic by comparison.
You'll need a tone pot of at least 500k and probably a .047mf cap to get more brightness. Apart from that a bit of amp and pedal tweaking wouldn't hurt either.

From the sound you now say you were looking for I would say that the Nailbomb is certainly not the right choice at all - I personally would not define it as a twangy pickup at all - has a lot of beef to my ears
I would maybe have pointed you towards a Miracle Man.

I can see that many of the guys would have pointed you towards the Nailbomb as you requested no fizz or fuzz in the tone and that is certainly true of that pickup.

But based on your shred interest and maybe appreciation of players like Nuno and maybe George Lynch etc etc - the Miracle man would seem a better choice.
