Title: Clayton picks?
Post by: _tom_ on May 13, 2007, 02:07:43 PM
So I'm having a bit of trouble finding new picks that feel "right" to me..

Dunlop tortex yellow (.73mm) feels too flimsy, but the next one up, Green (.88mm) is too stiff. So I guess I want something about in the middle of them two. Clayton seem to be the only brand who do .80mm picks (that I can find), and they seem a bit dear (£5 for 12 picks?)

Any other options? I just want something like the Dunlop yellow but a bit stiffer really, but not as stiff as the greens.

Pink ones are 1.14mm apparently.

I didnt do my maths beforehand, the Clayton ones dont seem that expensive really after all  So, has anyone tried them?

I use Clayton custom Delrin picks in both .73 & .88 gauges (bought bag of 300 about 8 years ago).  Also have some 1.26 Acetal for my drop-Bb 13-62 strung "monster" guitar.  Both materials are really good - they wear rather than snap, I haven't broken a single pick in the years I've been using them... :)

Cheers Antag. How would you say the gauges compare in stiffness to dunlop ones? IE do they feel the same as the dunlop equivalent, or a bit stiffer or flimsier?

One of the reviews on Strings Direct says "A little less slippery than Tortex with a tiny bit more give, yet they feel a little heavier than the corresponding gauge in Tortex."

so, I have no idea what to expect

btw, are these the ones you have? http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/Catalogue/ViewProduct.aspx?productId=306

Nope, these (http://www.stringsdirect.co.uk/Catalogue/ViewProduct.aspx?productId=1319) in 1.26 gauge, the .73 & .88 gauge Delrin ones I bought direct (http://www.steveclayton.com/delrin.html)

I've never tried the Ultem material & can't really compare to Dunlop as I haven't used one in years... :)

I like the material of the Claytons but I bought some and they were all slightly warped and I can't straighten them. Another one you can try are Dunlop The Wedge, they're like the tortex but white (with the coloured turtle), slightly pointier and they feel a bit lighter to me, so maybe try the green ones.

I haven't done much pick research but the one I use is the Dunlop Nylon 0.8mm (or 1mm? cant reemember). It's the black one with dots on the surface for grip. It's light and pretty stiff and so far I'm satisfied with them.

Another vote for the Dunlop Ultex - I'm just waiting for the Ultex Jazz IIIs myself...

Are ultex a bit stiffer than the normal Tortex? If so, I would guess the .73 ultex feels good..

Yep, they're a bit stiffer with a bit more "snap".  I like them with my all mahogany acoustics.

Email their customer support - I got a sample sent to me last week for nothing, but its tip wasnt sharp and I prefer the XL size, which it wasn't available in.
Looks like I'm stuck with nylon
