Title: Celestion G12T-75
Post by: BloodMountain on May 13, 2007, 09:41:57 PM
what do you guys think of this speaker for that Death style death metal tone?

thanks!

ok, maybe i'm being too specific: any death metal tone then.

they are the standard speaker in Marshall 4x12s - I'd imagine the majority of metal bands back in the day where using them (or a similar cab loaded with the same speaker).

they work perfectly for metal but sound best played LOUD - they can be a bit weak/thin at low gain/low volumes.

thanks for the reply!

yeah, i heard they were best when wound up, thanks.

would you say it is a solid tone rather than a smooth one?
and is it brutal enough for me?

They're solid, very tight.

I think that metal is the only genre in which these speakers sound good. Anything else, anything at all, and I'd suggest ripping 'em out for a pair/quad of Celstions or Eminence.

I had a 4x12 with them in the past, could never get it sound good. Something's always missing with them. Maybe they're better in combination with Greenbacks or V30. I think that's what they do in Ueberschall Cabs.

So, menolikey ...

G12T75's are a great metal speaker, if your using a marshall type amp try doing a G12T75 and G12H30 X pattern for a real throaty sound!

- I don't play Metal, but notice that compared to other ( Jensen and Eminence ) speakers, - the low end response nearly makes my legs buckle in a solid 4x12 Matamp cab.  They are still versatile enough to take the more subtle range of soul and blues I like, using a Laney LH50R-II as the head.

I can imagine that If I was the kind of player that used Warpigs, then the GT12-75 would make them sound like ' Warpigs + '.

ah ok thanks.

thanks!

V30 would probably be better, i am planning to get some as i don't really like the default celestions in there now.

K-100s are freaking awesome.

Very dark tone - Very brutal.

yeah, i convinced my dad that i should buy these instead of the cheaper option that he usually always goes for.

well, one of them, only one is broke!

so that brings me onto my final question: can you mix a 70 Watt speaker with a 100 Watt speaker in the same cab, with the same Ohms?

thanks!

Yes. I have a 30w speaker mixed with a 120w speaker (G12H and Eminence 121), and have had no problems.

You should try a Celestion Century Vintage, they are very light (neodymium magnet, 1.6Kg total! ), they sound like a V30 with a bass boost.

my marshall 4x12 1960 has 4 of those speakers.

V30s wouldn't be my first choice for death metal - that midrange honk and reduced low end (compared to G12T-75) doesn't suit the style imo.

the K100s would be great I'm sure, but the 75s are tried and tested by thousands of metal bands.

i liked how the G12 greenback sounds with that framus cobra amp.
but i´m sure i´ll mix it in X pattern with two more celestions, those g12 century.

+1

i have one
sounds great even without a cab
a v30 weights 4.7 kg
so 1.66 kg for a few extra bucks is a really nice choice
and v30's are chinese now
century vintage are still made in england
g12t75's have great tone, but no presence
they're too scooped when used alone
nice for bedroom playing and even pro recordings (nevermore uses them), but not in a band, specially if there is another guitarrist with middier speakers

i have read a few reviews, and they seem to sound VERY vintage, just like their name says.

the K100 would have a much more modern sound, just what i'm looking for

I was told the neodymium magnet speaker are also louder than the traditional ceramic ones. Did you notice this between the V30 and the century vintage?

I am thinking as well about replacing the G12T 75 of my 80W 1x12 Marshall by something with more mids. I thought of the V30 or the century vintage. But as I am mostly playing alone at home, I really don't need something that is gonna be louder than what I already have.

that amp is screaming out for a classic lead 80, it has the increased mids you want.  I like it alot more than V30s as it doesn't have that peaky midrange honk that the V30 does.  The CL80 also has a chunkier bass end.

can I also point out that the current Chinese-made V30 is no different to the one that was made in the UK since the parts have been made in China for many years now - they were only 'assembled' in the UK.  I'd be very surprised if even Eric Johnson could tell the difference in a blind test.
