Title: My aged pickup cover not so 'aged'
Post by: SAMLP on May 14, 2007, 08:54:40 PM
Just recieved my bare knuckle miracle man and can't wait to get it in my Les paul

However, I ordered the aged nickle cover (an extra 10 quid ontop of a regular cover) and it doesn't look anything near as rugged and aged as the ones in the gallery section or the pictures on the bare knuckle shop page

It looks like its just got some grease smeared over it or something lol

Its not too big an issue as its the tone thats important but i was looking forward to having a nice rusty, aged pickup in my bridge

any body got any pictures of their aged pickup covers to compare?

Heres what it should look like...

woah... that IS a big difference...

unusual though- my worn p-90 cover was nigh-on destroyed just as i asked, and i've never heard of anyone else in a similar situation as you...

odd...  :?

Hmmm that is strange, doesn't look anything like the picture  I'm sure it will age with time so it will look better as time goes on.

By the way Man UTD rule!!

Tim would definitely rough it up if you asked.

will they be open now or shall i wait till tommorrow?

or is there any way i could get in contact with tim right now?

I ordered it from a shop who got them in bulk so maybe they rushed it or something...
(even though mine was an individual order)

Dunno. Never needed to. I always just ring them, and have never needed any after sales service (though Tim gave me some pickup covers once: thats another story, a bkp-customer-service-is-fricken-awesome story).

I can appreciate your haste if its not what you wanted, but do you really need the pickups to look the part tonight? Talking is always so much better than emails....

I like the way mine came out!

Have you tried comparing them to regular nickel covers?

These are mine along with a real 60's cover to show how close they look.  I wouldn't want pickups with rust on them!

it just doesn't look how i expected it (rusty, scratched, destroyed etc.)

well i was dissapointed with my burnt chrome miracle man when i got it and i PMd tim and he said just to buff it and just generally use it and it woudl get better over time

and he was right.

the only thing that annoys me is that i play with my little finger on the corner of my bridge pup[ and the burnt chrome finish has worn off there and its like raw nickel now
but still it looks unique so im happy

Just put the pickups in your guitar. After a couple of months the slightly roughed up nickel will age in a more natural way.

I would call that aged...in a natural way so that someone might actually believe it that it's not brand new.
It will also continue to age naturally once you have it in the guitar.

Just to put this in context, the order for this pickup came through a dealer so I had no direct customer contact. An aged nickel cover was speced which is what we did, the pic in the gallery is another example of what we can do but is actually an aged raw nickel cover which is a different finish again.
As with any hand finish, the results are always unique and do vary, also as Feline pointed out covers continue to age the more you play them. In fact the best way to age a cover is just to play the guitar.....nickel ages really quickly and the result is completely natural.
Re:burnt chrome...........again these are plated covers so will wear with time just like any normal cover.Plating is microns thick so isn't bullet proof.Chrome lasts the best is you always want a shinny look but eventually chrome will age.Nickel ages quickest-normally a couple of gigs and they start to go.One of the guitars at this years LGS had new nickel covers on and by the end of the show had developed a serious patina and great looking playing wear.

Just to reinforce Tim's point.........
Look at the Bridge Pickup....under the Low E and A Strings!!!!!

Damn!!! Doesn't show up as well as I had hoped, but this photo was taken after One Hour's Playing Time!! OK.....so they are Raw Nickel Covers, but if you could see them NOW!!!!!

It really is just a case of Playing the Guitar.....The Nickle will dull down Beautifully I promise!! :D

Just talked to Tim and realised about it being aged nickel not aged raw nickel
I reckon these will look better in my LP any way as they will fit in better with the other hardware which has aged slightly already

Just to point out I wasn't complaining just a bit miffed about the picture on the page - I can't wait to collect my guitar from the shop and thrash out on it!!

Pictures to follow...
