Title: So, is the Les Paul Vixen, the Les Paul Jr for women?
Post by: Sailor Charon on May 16, 2007, 01:28:14 PM
I ask because it doesn't have the maple top (which the Goddess does) and costs a fair bit less too... [Just curious, not considering getting one]

"Vixen" is such a $%&#ing gay name for a guitar... but yeah, it seems like they've not strayed too far from the LP Jr. path.

Actually, it means somthing very rude in German. Very f***ing rude, if you see what I mean.
Anyway, since it's aimed at us girls...

Just wondering, how do you feel about guitars being "aimed" at women, Sailor Charon?  Is it a good idea?  Are "prettier" colours and skinnier necks an attraction for you?

I think the LP Vixen looks great, I like the colours too (they had a limited run of SG-Xs in those colours 7 or 8 years ago).  It's very much like a Junior, lightweight and simple.  I'd buy one in a heartbeat if it wasn't for the narrow nut and slim-taper neck.

The few female guitar players I know (literally, like 3) are all offended by them... especially when Daisy Rock come in with their noncey flowery efforts.

Out of the three, one plays a Tele, one plays a Strat and the other dons a manly SG.

Well... I like the necks. But 60's necks in general aren't bad... They tend to cut the weight as well, which is handy in some ways. Having said that Les Pauls aren't as heavy as I expected them to be.
As to the colours, well, the Goddess colours are nice. Not sure about the Coral Vixen, mind you. And some of the Daisy Rock guitars are just too pink. [And Gibson's Fireburst is nice too...]

I rather like the guitar and don't have any problem with the name (even if a similar sounding word in German means "self-abuse")

Gibson would be better off just aiming the guitar at any players who want a lighter instrument in this classic shape with a slim neck.

there are plenty of guys who have small hands or are not keen on having a heavy lump of a guitar hung round their necks.

And maybe a lot of girl players may be attracted to those features and would chose it as the best option, but they don't want to feel patronised or be specially catered for (almost suggesting that they are not as capable as blokes)

But how would a women know that a guitar has those features without it being named "THIS GUITAR IS FOR GIRLS - BUY ME"?

I can't imagine myself wanting to buy a guitar that had been designed/styled primarily to appeal to some kind of macho "male" market. What, would it have naked women and fast cars all over it?  The FHM signature guitar?   It would be ridiculous!  (Though, doubtless it would appeal to someone, somewhere, I suppose!).

I'm assuming you left out the " " at the end of that comment?

i agree with feline . . .   lets just have guitars in all shapes, sizes and colours and let individuals decide what they want!!

I think its funny that the LP vixen comes in pink (OK,  coral) and baby blue, very unusual colours for gibbo's and a definate attempt to appeal to females.  I think these colour choices will mean you will be able to pick these guitars up for very cheap prices soon - maybe then its worth getting one to re-spray!!

the smaller size and weight will suit so many other players that want the LP look without the downsides.

I suppose the BFG is a real mans guitar!!  (marketing wise anyway, even that is chambered to reduce weight!!)

Very good point, hope you're right about the prices - I'll keep an eye on the sale ads.  And bollox to resprays, I'd be very happy with Corona Yellow or Caribbean Blue!

Apart from some of the colours I'd be very happy with one of them.

Iv'e played a couple of the Goddess SG models, and thought the ones I tried totally outclassed horrible SG GT, as well as every other new SG I tried that day.

As for the Dasy Rock guitars my daughter has one of their basses (cost 220 new :) ) that totally outclasses any Epi, Squire or standard Fender. Their Retro range are excellent guitars and I would happily to own one, and their 12 string is almost as good as my Ric (but 1/6th of the price)

Anything that gets more people playing (or trying to) is a good thing, but it's the gimicks which annoy me (but the SG GT is more way sadder than any Daisy shaped guitar in that respect)

Wouldn't you love to see Zakk Wylde with a daisy shaped guitar, he truely would be matcho after that.

I have a shell pink hardtail 60's strat and a shel pink 66 Precision Bass, also a 63 burgundy mist strat and coming in a bit, a 62 stack pot Jazz bass in burgundy mist.  I like the colours.  I was thinking of getting a grafitti yellow strat too!

I suspect that they are made by Schecter or the same factories as the Schecter guitars.
The founder - Tish Ciravolo is married to Michael Ciravolo who is president of Schecter guitars since the late 1990s

Well there is a certain similarity to schecters that I have looked at.

Though both are well built, I have to say that I like the Daisy Rock retro series a lot more than the schecter range (on the whole).

The Daisys are just that litle bit less metal ;)
