I play death/thrash/melodeath/neoclassical/prog/folk and want to have pickups that can be used fairly well for most purposes. I mostly play death/thrash/neoclassical shred (well, neoclassical wank in my case) so I would prefer something that will handle this stuff better than the other styles. My issue is I've been looking at some dimarzio's and others and they look pretty good for getting that smooth, liquid lead sound for shred, but maybe its just the guys who use them but I need to get a really agressive sound from the bridge pickup to get that huge distorted chunk, and I can't tell from what I'm reading and the demos and samples I've heard which ones would be good for these applications. Someone at Ultimate Guitar reccomended I check out Bare Knuckles, so here I am.
I play a Dual Rec right now but I'm picking up and Engl in the near future (either a powerball or a savage so thats changing), and am looking to put these in my PRS standard 24 to see how it goes because I've never swapped the pickups out of one of my guitars before.
What pickup combination would you reccomend so that they were agressive enough for that heavy, high gain, aggressive riffing in the bridge position but can also give you that smooth liquid lead on the neck? I think the guy (sorry I can't remember what your username was if you end up reading this) reccomended a Miracle Man/Cold Sweat set, and someone else reccommended War Pigs and someone reccomended the Holy Diver. What are the advantages and disadvantages of these various pickups for the aforementioned application?
Thanks in advance to anyone that helps up.

for the most crushingly heavy tone for death metal, the Ceramic Warpig is the way to go: i have one and use it for Death and Thrash purposes, and i couldn't ask for more.
i have heard good things about the Warpig neck, i will find a link for you...
EDIT: here's one

it's on the second page, the second post down.
EDIT 2: and another :D

this one is a custom warpig neck, read the whole thread, it's got some great info :D
hope this all helps, friend!

Thanks a lot for the help man.

Ceramic warpig/cold sweat combo.
C-Pig for extreme heaviness and aggression
CS for liquid shred

Is the miracle man not as good as the ceramic warpig then? Is it an output issue or a tonal difference?
-
the CWP is heavier (higher gain and higher output), and i think it has more bass then the MM. it is also slightly more scooped.
-
tonal and output difference :)
the MM has a bit more output, due to the massive ceramic magnet. it clocks in at 17ish kilo-ohm.. now add that magnet to a pickup, that goes over 21k and do the math :D
-
the MM has a bit more output
than a CWP? :?

sorry.. should have said -than a regular WP

Could a warpig possibly be too bassy for playing really tight tech death and deathrash rhythms? I don't know of any artists that use either pickup and I live in western canada where no one I know has BKPs so I can't hear them anywhere really.
-
no, not too bassy at all. it is pretty well balanced. apart of that soaring midrange :D
-
Do you think the CWP/Cold Sweat set will match well with a PRS Standard 24?
Thanks for all the advice BTW.

Ixnay on the scooptay. The MM is the less middy of the two.
No better or worse. The C-Pig is more more powerfull by a far ways, heavier, more attacking and compressed. The MM isnt really an extreme metal pickup. Its too refined. It tops out somewhere round metallica. The C-Pig melts faces and crushes skulls.

i think cwp is 18k
why not a painkiller?

CWP is approximately 21k.

i think cwp is 18k
nothing is different from a normal WP, other than the magnet

yep. mine clocks in at 21.6K
too bassy? turn the bass knob down
it's fine, it does get too bassy if you overdo the bass (i.e. if the previous pickup had none and you turned the amp's bass up beforehand to compensate)
my bass is on 5 at the moment, it's perfect and tight, whilst being hammering and not overwhelming

Alright, thanks a lot guys, sounds like the Ceramic Warpig is for me. Is the cold sweat the best to put in the neck for lead playing then?

I've got a Miracle Man in my PRS Standard 24 and alot of the time I play the styles that you do. I also have an ENGL powerball. Personally I think the Warpig would be total overkill. It's not really geared towards the thing you are looking for (I had a warpig before and didn't think it suited it too well) where as the Miracle Man would do that. Very smooth but biting high end, chunky low end and a good amount of mids in there.
As you will be getting an ENGL at some point, the amount of low end already in those amps is going to be plenty, I wouldn't suggest going with the Warpig as you're going to get a massive amount of low end added to an already massive sounding signal.

what's wrong with turning the bass on the amp down...?
-
Even when turning the bass down on the Powerball, there's still a huge amount of low end in there and it's still tight with the Miracle Man.

that's because of the voicing and magnet type of the pickup. it's a ceramic. the ceramic warpig is very tight like the miracle man. they are supposed to be very similar, just the ceramic warpig has more output and a little more aggressive sounding. the regular alnico warpig is supposed to be a little more bassy and raw and not as tight. I think the poster said he was going to go with the ceramic warpig, not the regular warpig. I do agree with you though.... just from what I've heard about the alnico warpig, I would stay away from it.... but either way, the powerball is supposed to be a very tight amp...
lol I'm about to get a bogner uberschall, so I need all the tightness I can get

Thanks for the advice guys.
maliciousteve, did you use the alnico or ceramic warpig before? And when you say biting high end on the miracle man, does it get harsh or does the pickup still sound fluid?
