Title: Ozzy's new album
Post by: Ratrod on May 26, 2007, 10:32:18 AM
Has anyone heard Ozzy's new album yet? Is it any good? (worth getting?)

I saw Ozzy on BBC 1 last night in an interview with Jonathan Ross. After the interview Ozzy did a song of the new album. Sounded pretty good.

Zakk was playing a Split-tail SG-V made by Gibson, not Dean. When the song was finished Zakk smiled and had that twinkle in his eye. He looked happy and sober. It's much better to see him like that.

I read an interview a couple of weeks ago where Ozzy said he's been sober for "something like" two years and this is the first album he has recorded completely sober in his entire career.  Hasn't he said that about every album he'd done since about 1990?

I have to say after all the reality TV shows, Ozzy's recording career seems to be becoming increasingly irrelevant.  The records always sound like Zakk popped into the studio for a week or two to help his old uncle out - it's a side project, not a proper band any more.  I'm surprised anyone bothers to buy the records.

And although I liked Zakk's custom shop V, that SG/V hybrid doesn't look right at all.  :(

It's boiler plate Ozzy; it's been done before (and better) by him in days past.

I know its not as good as stuff off of his earlier albums, but I still quite like it. I much prefer it to a lot of music out at the moment.

yeah, judging by that clip feline posted, ozzy's done it before better.

though, it makes a change to get a guitar solo and 50 trillion (rough estimate) pinch harmonics on the jonathan ross show.

I saw it too, the song was VERY average - Zakk ripped it up though and I like that SG/V hybrid too.

I thought that guitar looked rubbish personally, the song was alright, but there were a few bits that seemed a little 'wrong' to me.

You need to look harder then, dude. There's a LOT of great guitar music out there for those inclined to dig beyond the pages of Guitar World and Revolver.

Good god that was poor  :(

I really have to give up any hope for new music from OZZY.

R.I.P.

I didn't like the guitar either, i like his other kinda version of it though which is dirtyied up and i think it's a bit smaller.

Not the best music ever but i wasn't expecting much judging by previous albums with Zakk Wylde.

See, I don't think it's that bad.  Got some nice dirty Zakk groove going on, and a $%&#ing shred solo- Ozzy's vocals seem to be getting a bit tired, and he looks very grandpa-like compared to the metalness of the other musicians, but who cares?  It's Ozzy! :D  When I saw Black Sabbath at Download '05, he got the whole field cheering madly just by having a mug instead of a bottle of water on stage. :D

It would be nice if Ozzy went on tour again. He still owes me one. Last time the tour was cancelled because he parked his quad bike against a tree.

The main riff in that track sounded more like something Rob Zombie would have come out with. I'm not sure it worked all that well.

As for the SGV, it just looked plain weird to me.

I find it thoroughly depressing how Ozzy has turned into such a shameless self parody. I once idolised the man but it's almost become like he's just someone for people to laugh at rather than accept as one of the greatest frontmen of all time. From what i've heard of the new album it's all seemed quite mediocre and generic. Ok, it's HIS genre really but there's nothing particularly inspiring about his recent musical output. I really wish that he had actually stayed in retirement.  :(

And I'm not even gonna get into the Sharon Vs. Maiden thing either...  :x

Ozzy once said he still wanted to make his 'Sgt. Pepper'. How long will we have to wait for that.

No disrespect to Ozzy, but it'll never happen.  He's a fantastic bloke and a genuine rock legend but he hasn't got the talent to make an iconic album like Sgt Pepper.

If he ever did, it would sound like a bad copy of Sgt Pepper, I suspect.  Ozzy loves Lennon and the Beatles, hence the obligatory schmaltzy ballad on every album.  In fact I wonder if his heart's really in the rock stuff nowadays?

In terms of iconic and world changing albums: he's already done it on numerous occassions (albeit mostly in sabath over thirty years ago)! What more does he need to prove? The man should save whats left of his dignity and retire as gracefully as possible.

I'm not saying he needs to prove anything, nor am I criticising what he's done in the past, I was referring to Ratty's specific point about "Ozzy's Sgt Pepper".  Yes, he's made lots of great albums, and he was in the band that for all intents and purposes invented heavy metal.  That's a bloody great achievement as far as I'm concerned.

But HM isn't the Beatles, and Master Of Reality isn't Sgt Pepper (much though I might like it to be).  Sgt Pepper's an album (and an album cover) that would be recognised by billions of people, literally all over the world.  It transcends musical genres, even transcends music altogether.

Ozzy may be pretty famous, but most people only know him as a funny old long-haired bloke who swears a lot.  The "man in the street" wouldn't know a Black Sabbath or Ozzy album from a hole in the ground.

As to whether or not he'll ever make this hypothetical "Sgt Pepper" album - Ozzy's only ever been as good as the people he works with.  In Sabbath he had the charisma, the eccentric personality, but it was Tony and Geezer who wrote the songs.  In his solo career, he's displayed a remarkable talent for finding genius guitarists - especially the first one - and made some very good records, but still the music depends a great deal on his collaborators (no matter what the writing credits may say).  And the people he writes with now aren't anywhere near as good as the people he wrote with then.

It's not a criticism to say Ozzy's no Lennon or McCartney.  Not many people are.
