it can be done but in my experience doing this results in a very thin lifeless sound.
You would be better off getting a samson C01U and micing your amp
they are really good quality USB condensor mics.
Crazy_joe has just bought one the other day i aren't sure whether he has recieved it yet though./

Get a Palmer. They are made for that express purpose. You can use a Hot Plate, too, but I think it sounds like butt.
-

Palmer PDI-09 "The Junction", available here:
http://www.thomann.de/gb/palmer_pdi09.htm
It's not quite as good as my Celestion Alnico Blue - it lacks a little warmth and character - but it's still a very credible option. I use mine all the time for late night practise and never feel that it's too much of a compromise.
-
does it work between amp and speakers
-
+ 1 on the PDI-09. I use one for late night stuff and also for mixing with a mic'd output. You need to have a load (for valve amps anyway) between the PDI09 and amp (thru input to speaker) which can be your speaker and/or load box/attenuator.
-
the pdi 09 the xlr does it have to be balanced as have unbalanced inputs
-
there is the koch lb120 II, which is a dummy load, power attenuator and a di.
I'm going to get one soon...
-
nice but pricey
-
I have a PDI-09. It's cheap and does what it's supposed to. You have to experiement a bit to get the sweet spot with your amp (the sound produced by the PDI-09 changes with the volume of the amp master and the settings on the device).
On my Shiva it sounds very good on the lowest setting with very low volume and in the bright setting, however when you turn the amp up, you need to go to normal or mellow and increase the dB padding.
-
cool have ordered the pdi 09 should be here in a couple of days thanks for all your help.....gets a lot better write up than the H&K one I looked at hadn't heard of the palmer ones till mentioned here(thanks for link froglord)

I use a LB120-II with my Powertone II and it's great, although you don't get the tone you do with a mic'd cab but that's to be expected. It's still really good though.
Look at all the features....
