Title: Paul Gilbert Worship
Post by: Afghan Dave on May 31, 2007, 11:05:12 AM
Just got the tutorial DVD of "Get out of my yard", and and all Gilbert fans should check it out.

It is:

FUN - The guy really loves playing the guitar and it shines through in every aspect!

SCARY - Clean, articulate and super-fast.

I just can't get enough of Paul, he must be my dream instructor as his love of the instrument is totally infectious + I'd know I could never outgrow his lessons.

He is AWESOME  PDT_027

I haven't heard of this tutorial....must....get...it!!

I bought his first 2 instructionals and I'm really getting alot of mileage out of his Guitars from Mars intructional on youtube. It's all blues!!!!

I really love the way he teaches guitar!!

i got 6 of his instructional vids now..

i just cant get through the guitars from mars and intense rock vids... just way too much, way too fast... you've got lessons, that would normally span over a year, compressed into a two hour instructional set.
you tend to lose focus, but if you're serious about it, it'll force you to get a teacher.

the get out of my yard one is pretty damn good, if at a higher level than the rest of his stuff, but he explains stuff very well (and i'm halfway through the interesting solo of castle dragon hehe. fun fun fun song!!)

I'm gonna eventually get them all.

I understand the Guitar from Mars stuff, it's just to have the time to sit and practice. Sometimes at my blues jams I loose ideas when I'm soloing, these vids are very helpful. I can memorize licks pretty easily, it's just having time to build them up to speed I lack.

Is this tutorial only available in Europe?

I was just wondering if my dvd player will play it. I Didn't think about that until after I ordered it from the musicroom. I know my brother has to have a universal dvd player to watch dvds his wife gets from her mom in France.

yes, yes they do.. they're mutants. the next step in shred evolution... just look at their freakishly huge hands and 10" pinky fingers.
seriously.. paul gilbert, steve vai, jeff loomis...

I've been working on Rusty Old Boat. The 10th to 17th fret stretch is a huge one for me. I have to put my LP, Classical style in order to play the lick.      *shakes fist at Paul Gilbert*

won't do you any good, that... tried, all it did, is hurt my wrist.

i stopped all song progress, to get my hammer-ons/pull-offs up to par. this is my weak spot.

I have fallen in love with the unique sized picks that Gilbert uses
They are a bit shorter than a standard pick
They really encourage good technique in my opinion
Just gotten a load in and will continue to do so

aaahahahaha.. another convertee. they should be giving dave a comission LOL

i LOVE them. i find that i can pick MUCH harder than with the standard pick (if you guys have checked some unplugged, or really clean gilbert vids, you'll notice just how much attack he's got on the strings), not to mention faster (now i won't claim, the picks are the key to his success as a shredder, but they did improve my playing.

but.. i shred them WAY too fast (especially when playing Castle Dragon... that pick scr@pe just kills picks). i'm taping them to my door as trophies.. but i misplaced my most recent one :(

Over on HCAF theres a non-shredders shredding contest, with the song being Technical Difficulties.. I can do the first few bars at half time fairly accurately, but then I put it to full speed and its so de-motivating  I'm so bad at alternate picking its embarrasing.

I really should use my god given talent in a more financially rewarding way... but the happiness of my BKP brothers is reward in itself ....

easy song.. bar the solo.. which isnt that hard by itself.. it's just technical. and if you want to play it as close as possible, you better not try to learn it note by note. you have to go behind the scenes and look at the technique and scale of each run, perfect that and then you can probably take a stab at the solo.

you GOTTA know your scales :)

That's what I did with the A & B mixolydian parts on Rusty Old Boat. I looked at the patterns and just decided to pratice  mixolydian as fast as I could; then, I learned the parts. That really helped me with playing that part of the song.

that's just the bonus ;)

the main part is, now that you know the scale, you can play whatever features that scale already.. just have to figure out the pattern, and you got it. plus, you expand your lick library with it and use it in your own stuff.

I agree!

I have the first 1:18 memorized. The solo is gonna be a bitch!

Gilbert has really pulled me out of a rut. He's helped me understand more about the guitar.

ditto :D

listening and watching gilbert, made me go and understand how solos work, not how they play. once you know the why's and how they work, solos start becoming much easier :)

What also helped me out is jamming blues with these old guys.

I was always a bedroom rocker, memorizing scales and my favorite songs, but since I've been jamming with those old guys I've gotten better. They've forced me to improvise. It's different when ya have to improvise while the band is playing.

yep :D
you improve MUCH faster when you're in a band environment. that's why i'm on active band search.. but noone seems interested enough.
i had an audition a couple of months back, but while the band was serious enough, the music did nothing for me..

Blues isn't my main style but I go just to get the jam out of my system.

Those guys are really good at blues, swamp pop, jazz, and New Orleans music.

The drummer is closer to my age and he wants to get together oneday for a rock and improv jam. I'm 32 and he's 40.

I find the Mules do a great job at getting Paul's tone.

Post by: Davey on June 29, 2007, 09:03:07 PM
paul uses PAFs in some of his guitars. so using mules is pretty understandable :D
he's playing a Vintage Modern Marshall these days and his tone is superb!

back onto the jamming.. if they played blues, it'd probably join, to add a touch of aggression (if they'd be willing of course) but the music was.. while groove oriented.. sterile and well .. meh
