Title: Wich pickup for a real heavy sound?
Post by: Lysander on June 02, 2007, 02:25:25 PM
Hi guys

I am new here. I have been playing electric guitar for about 2 years and I wanna buy  a pickup now. I have an U.S.A. built Fender Stratocaster with 3 single-coil pickups and I am thinking about replacing the bridge pickup with a BK pickup (there is plenty of space in there).

Heavy metal is what I want to play, I'd love to have a sound like ''Into the Void'' of Black Sabbath ''Metal Gods'' of Judas Priest or ''Suicide Solution'' of Ozzy, generally 70's and 80's stuff. Basically I like the middle frequences boosted and I DONT like an electric/trebly sound.

I use a 40 Watt tube amplifier, a Traynor one. Wich pickup should I get to sound heavier?

Thanks

Warpig i think would be a bit overkill for what he wants. I agree with Holy Diver though that could be an option.

You would need a new scratchplate - But I can't see why it shouldn't fit in the cavity.

Yes, I removed the pickguard and there is space enough for a humbucker in the bridge position.

I'd like a dirty, middle boosted sound for solos. but as I said, not an electric, thin, trebly sound. Something ''fat'' and heavy.

I like to palm-mute when soloing, especially in the low strings and that needs a fat sound to work.

Ive seriously thought of doing this...

get a set of Uber sinner single coils, there is a clip on the players section and they sound AMAZING!!!  perfect for what u want and, imagine the look on peoples faces, when they see a 'standard' stat soundling like a war machine!

Ok, I'll think of what you guys say, but when I tried to order a Warping pickup, several options I hade to chose confused me a bit:

Spacing: 50mm or 53mm

What does this mean? How do I know if my guitar is 53mm or 53 mm?
Should I open the cover?
:x shite I just changed strings!

Thanks again

the difference spacing measurements are for if you have a floyd or not and only applies to the bridge pickup

If you can fit a humbucker in the bridge, I would go with a Holydiver, Cold Sweat, or Rebel Yell. If you can only use single coils then a Sinner/Trilogy Suite set would work great as well.

Use a ruler to measure from E string to e string over your bridge pickup.

OK, thanks it seems to be over 5 cm, must be 53mm.

What if I get a Floyd-Rose? I am planning to get one, can I do it if I have a 53mm spacing, or only if I have a 5mm?

By the way, I think I'll get the Warpig. From what I read in the specifications it must be ok for the stuff I wanna play.

Floyd Rose spacing is 53mm, so you will be fine.

Ok, and something more then: Should I get the pickup calibrated, or can I do this myself? Will it affect my sound?

This confused me at first when i bought my Nailbomb, it's a calibrated SET, meaning that you get a bridge and a neck pickup.

This can be a little confusing.

Calibrated set refers to a set of pickups that don't suffer from the huge volume jumps which some manufacturers pickups suffer when switching from neck to bridge positions.

Ok, but since I just want one pickup in the bridge position, I don't have to worry about calibrating right?

Wich is better for a FAT, clean yet heavy-distorted sound? Something like 'Little Dolls' of Ozzy or 'Warpigs' (!) of Black Sabbath or 'Aces High' of Iron Maiden

The Warpig or the Painkiller?

Sorry, but as you see i don't know many things about pickups, gotta learn

I would say the Holy Diver is more fat sounding than a Warpig.
