Title: G12H30s or Vintage 30s or the mix of two?
Post by: LazyNinja on June 04, 2007, 11:10:30 AM
I think I'm going to replace the speakers in my Laney GS412 cab. While the seventy 80s are decent I think they are very bland. They sound nice but kinda flat and nothing stands out that makes you say wow. I've been talking to this dealer and he can offer me 4 G12H30s for £130 delivered or 2 G12H30 + 2 V30 for £156. Haven't asked about the price for 4 V30s but it'll be more.

I want to go for the classic hard rock sound but I want it to handle high gain too. I know the G12H30 + Laney combination works well thanks to _tom_'s clips. But I'm just wondering whether it could be even better mixing it with V30s in an X configuration. Am I better off just buying 4 G12H30s? Which option do you think I should go for?

sorry for a long post

I'm not the most clued up when it comes to speakers, so all I'll say is contact Matamp for your speakers when you come to buy them.  You're in Leeds so they're not far away for you to collect them by car.  Saves you the delivery cost plus the price will be better than anywhere else - guaranteed.

i have a V30 / G12H mix - no regrets ;) the two work together really well with my marshall jmp50 MV.

i dont know how it will work with your particular amp though.

Is that G12H or G12H30 (I assume youre talking about the G12H30s)? They have many similarly named speaker models!

I'd go for the mix (I have it in a 2x12 and it's great). Actually, I'd like to mix a 12H30 and a V30 and a 12-65 and a 12M25, but because of the different efficiencies this might be problematic. Still great for playing live or recording though, if you could always mic different flavours depending on what works for the occasion.

Hey your prices are awesome, which dealer is this?

A company called Excess Audio. I found them on ebay. There is another company called Lean-Business and their prices are very good too. The Excess Audio guys say on their listing that they match prices so I basically asked them to match lean-business (because the EA had cheaper postage)and they told me they'll beat them by 50p per speaker. So £120-50px4=£118, plus £12 postage = £130 for 4 G12H30s.

its a g12h30 anniversary.

i prefer the g12h to the v30 as a single speaker. but the v30 tempers the warmth of the g12h in my opinion.

Hi, I have a 2 x 12 cab that has a vintage 30 and a G12T-75. The overall range of this cabs ability is outstanding; the G12T-75 with its extended top having all the attributes that the V30 lacks and vice versa. It's a mix that I'd strongly recommend. Hey Bob, interesting about how you rate the G12-75. I think they are OK but I prefer Greenbacks in the celestion range. Everyones ears are different though.

Had word from the paint shop about the strat yet?

Cheers

It's only the combination of G12T-75's and the V30 that makes this work. On it's own the G12T-75 is a bit toppy for my taste.

Left a message at the paint shop; will chase it up again tomorrow.

for classic rock you can't beat G12H-30s, they also handle high gain very well too - I use a 5150 with my G12H-loaded 4x12.

if you want to mix speakers I'd go for some Classic Lead 80s in the bottom of the 4x12 with G12H-30s in the top.  I'm not a massive fan of V30s so I wouldn't suggest them.  the CL80s have a GREAT low end chunk to them.

I talked with Excess Audio again and now they can do 2 G12H30 and 2 V30 for £152.

I can see how the two would compliment each other's tone. The v30 providing the bite and the G12H30 giving the smooth richness. But then again the G12H30 sounds like a complete package in itself... I hate making decisions!!! :(

Would a greenback and V30 sound good together for a GH50L ??

Warmth of a GB with the bite of the V30.

Cheers
