Title: JACKSON AND METAL...ANYONE?
Post by: futuregun on June 07, 2007, 01:45:19 AM
well well!!
ive been tryin out a number of different pickups in my jackson, warm sounding alder body and i cant find th right biting tone.
ive tried emgs....too sterile, seymour duncan invader ...too muddy and now a dimarzio x2n...lackin in clean tone an  even distortion.i thought i was onto a winner there cuz chuck schunlder used it.

ive only been playin on/off for a couple of years but recently have got serious and am lookin for tone!!!
slighty progressive deathmetal is what im aimin for...with some thrash.

i was thinkin of nailbombs of else miracle man.....advice?

Warpig, possibly a ceramic warpig for some extra bite

Certainly a Warpig needs to be considered. As much power as you'll ever need, loads of definition and very good cleans too (I'm talking about the Alnico version here, it's the one I have experience of). From the descirption of the style you play and the sound you're after, I'd be very surprised if you weren't happy with the Warpig.

Holy Divers, listen to clips in the clip section by a guy called Antag, he does some extreme metal with his divers in alder bodied guitars but he also has great cleans too.
I have Holy Divers but they are in basswood, though they are great for all metal and achieve amazing cleans. I also use it for a lot of 80's/thrash metal.

EDIT - Here are some of Antags clips of Holy Divers in an alder bodied Jackson RR1T:

I'd say Alnico V Warpig as that will give both powerful distortion and clean tones. If I had to make a second choice I'd maybe say Nailbomb.

depending on weather yu prefer the sound of an alnico or cermaic magnet i think you were right first off saying either nailbomb or miracle man.
The alnico V nailbomb will be more agressive and earthy sounding, whereas the miracle man will be cleaner and smoother sounding.
The nailbomb is biased towards the upper mids, whereas the miracle man's focus is on the lower mids. If i were you i'd take the Nailbomb.

By the way what amp do you have? There are a lot of different suggestions here, maybe an amp model could help the decision.

It's only a personal opinion but if you're like me you may also find the Miracle Man a little too sterile as that was your complaint about EMG pups and the MM is the closest thing I think BKP have to EMG.

If you want warm and you want some cleans then I think it really has to be an Alnico V pup in an Alder body, hence the suggestions I made. Maybe a Holy Diver if you want another alternative?

im lookin to get a new rig/first real rig.edging towards peavey.maybe the xxl.though will try lots out before settling.
i defo think maybe nailbombs are th way to go as i wanna put some snap into my guitar sound.

If you like more bass then the Warpig will deliver but if you want less bass i would go with the Nailbomb. I think ceramics would be 2nd choice against Alnico v for this.

how does the type of magnets influence an change the sound.ceramic vs alinco v?

Ceramic magnets tend to give a more cutting and aggressive sound so the bass becomes more articulate. This is of particular use when you have a mahogany guitar, which tends to be bassy anyway. An Alnico V magnet produces a warmer tone and always seems a little more rounded to me so these tend to be used more on guitars that are a little brighter in nature. Of course, they can be mixed up in a guitar to produce different tones and effects, depending on their purpose, hence something like a Cold Sweat pup is ceramic for the bridge version and Alnico V for the neck version. The fact that your guitar is alder has led to the number of suggestions you've had that are Alnico V based.  There is a sticky posted on the forum that tells you more about magnets and their effect but I think that essentially covers it for what you're after.

Ceramic Nailbomb has come up a few times but no one has actually had one made yet, but i don't see the point really because there are other BKP's that would cover what a ceramic nailbomb would do.
